On scientific truth and Christian
truth...
07/16/2004 06:40 AMIn the middle of an
article about the way that the religious right have interfered with
scientific work in the US, I find a troubling paragraph:
At a time when biology is poised to undergo a fundamental
revolution, the US government, arguably the most potent government in
the history of the world, is rife with White House appointees who
believe that scientific truth and Christian truth cannot be
synonymous, and may well be in opposition.
I ask myself - do I believe that scientific truth and Christian
truth can be synonymous? My answer - no. I ask myself - do I believe
that they may well be in opposition? My answer - yes. The only
difference between me and the people from the religious right then, is
that we disagree with which 'truth' is the more reliable. I stick on
the side of the people who test their conclusions and refine their
belief systems with reference to evidence - they stick to the side of
the people who believe that a magic being sets bushes on fire and
turns women into salt.
So the scary bit for me is not that the nutters in power believe
that the two are incompatible, but that the assumption is that for
reasonable, normal, run-of-the-mill scientists all across America that
it's normal to be able to reconcile meteorology with the concept of
rains of blood and biology with people who bring people back from the
dead...

David Pescovitz:

Last week, my wife stumbled upon a small monograph of the work of
Iranian graphic designer
Reza
Abedini. Arabic script is naturally beautiful, and I think
Abedini's compositions, with text often a central graphic element, are
incredibly fresh and emotional. Today, my friend Anne Sanger sent me a
link to a great "Who's Who in Iranian Posters" page with links to even
more information about the country's happening graphic design scene.

Iran's blogging boom defies media control: There's an
opportunity here for me to spew some long-winded treatise about how
blogging is changing the world...but I'll just label this one as
"pretty cool" and call it good.
Take one exasperated Iranian woman. Add a computer. Hook
it up to the Internet. "And you have a voice in a country where it's
very hard to be heard," said Lady Sun, the online identity of one of

06/15/2004 10:17 AMBruce
Schneier has written an interesting article discussing the
accusation of Ahmed Chalabi of informing Iran that the US had broken
its codes and when Iran knew that the NSA was cracking their codes. He
digs into the history of Crypto AG, the NSA and Iran. He links to an
article about Hans
Buehler, the Crypto AG salesman who was arrested by Iran in 1992
on suspicion that Crypto AG had installed back doors in its encryption
machines. There is no conclusion, but this story reminds me of Crytonomicon and the
interesting world of information, misinformation and spying.

The recent earthquake in Bam, Iran may have claimed as many as 40,000
lives by some estimates. Sorting through the Persian blogosphere,
you'll find a number of sites where residents and expatriates are
posting about this tragedy, and its impact on their country's future.
Hossein Derakshan has
yet to sound out on his English-language site, but there's a post on

Persianblogger.com,

henaProudIranian. Many more are listed here, including blogs
written in Farsi (there are probably more than 12,000 of them -- here

Wired News). And finally, Doug Rushkoff (not Persian) has this to say.

tougher questions from the Minister of

You may recall last year when a Chinese airline
bought
the phone number 8888 8888 for $280,000. The number 8 is often
considered lucky in Chinese culture. At the time, we compared it to
the excesses of domain name speculation though, in their defense, the
airline says they bought the phone number because it was easy to
remember and not because of any superstitious beliefs. However, it
appears that things were just starting to ramp up. The latest news is
that
the phone number 135 8585 8585 has been sold for $1.1
million. According to the article, the pronunciation of the phone
number could be loosely translated into "let me be rich be rich be
rich be rich." Of course, one would have to be rich to spend $1.1
million
on a phone number - and you have to wonder how much
longer someone who throws money away like that will remain wealthy.

Mobile Number Phone Directory Panned
07/02/2004 11:36 AMChicago Tribune: Cust
omers rebelling against plan for cell-phone directory. The
proposal for a wireless number directory surfaced in May from the
Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association. Shortly after,
legislation was introduced in Congress and some states that were
seeking to regulate the directory. For one thing, lawmakers wanted to
assure that no number would be listed without permission and that
carriers could not charge for unlisting a number, as wired phone
companies do.
I just notified my mobile carrier,
T-Mobile, that if it participated in this directory, forcing me to opt
out at some later date, I would give serious thought to moving my
service to another carrier. This should be opt in, period.
I'm paying when people call me. For that reason alone I don't want to
have my number widely distributed. The people who need to have it, do
have it.
Why is this so difficult for the carriers to understand, anyway?
