It's not just data.

It's not just data.

It's not just data. 12/15/2002 03:29 AM

First off, may god have mercy on the Hard Drive of MacUpdate.com!

They have experienced a hard drive failure and don't have a backup! Oh my god!

I've experienced this sort of thing before. Thats why I have RAID 5 in my home computer and another external drive for backing up, as well as DVD backups once every other month.

One thing I didn't think about was my moveable type database! In one quick swoosh it could all be gone. How much would that suck? All those blogmarks, LOST!

So here is how you export your entries from the command line. This would be the same as if you went into moveable type's import/export section and exported them.

curl -d username=yourusername -d password=yourpassword -d blog_id=3 -d __mode=export "http://noeljackson.com/mt/mt.cgi" -o ~/Desktop/entries.bak

mysqldump is not an option for me, because I can not ssh into my hosts box and I can't do a remote backup (it just doesn't work for me, the username keeps calling in my localhost name, and the remote machine says im not a local user!). This command will also work for people using the Berkley DB with MT.

Backup often or regret it.

CNET reports that The University of California at Berkeley 's School of Information Management and Systems has released a report estimating that 5 quintillion bytes of new information was stored on print, film, magnetic and optical media in 2002. As one might expect,

The U.C. researchers estimated that stored information had doubled since its last study, which looked at the year 1999 and was released in 2000.

The report, "How Much Information? 2003," estimates that the majority of new information was stored on magnetic media such as the hard disks found in computers.

Peter-Paul Koch has unveiled his new site, QuirksMode.org, which features over 150 pages of cross browser CSS and javascript tips and tricks. Five months in the making, there's just too much good stuff to link to individual pieces here so my best recommendation is to head on over there and spend some time browsing around. I'll make an exception though in linking to the Table of Contents script, which uses the DOM to create an additional navigation bar linking to each of the level 2 and 3 headers on a page. Another great example of the power of structural markup.
