Entertainment 12/15/2002 02:28 AM

I never really have ever liked video games. I think most computer games are a waste of valuable time, that you could be using to do something much more productive. (Go learn a programming language. Build a rocket. Anything.) I always felt that if you wanted to play games you would just buy a game console.

I've got a playstation 2. This is just in case I really need to take a break. I don't usually use it, and plus there is always Qui nn, for OS X. But every once and a while I get the urge to play GT3 or some other game. I bought Parappa the Rappa 2 a while ago, and I love it. Today I went to the game stop and picked up Tetris Worlds, Parappa the Rappa (1), and Unjammy Lammy. All 3 are sweet.

I played Tetris Worlds against my girlfriend for about 3 hours today. Man, she whomped on me. Of course I wouldn't admit this, but dang, she's good. I guess I'm not as good at Tetris as I thought I was!

A teacher at my school got thirty two thousand and something on Quinn. Holy shnikees. Try beating that score!

That's Entertainment

That's Entertainment 10/28/2003 11:09 PM
I got dragged away from my entertaining computer to be entertained by a set of entertainers across town last night. We had a general idea what to expect, but didn't really understand what was waiting for us on stage: a comedian, a guitarist, and a musical genius named Andy. It doesn't take much to capture my attention, but (generally speaking) I pay immediate heed to Stand-Up routines. Blaine Capatch was nearing the end of his set, playing with dorky little puppets and trying to get us to laugh. He whips out this "99¢ Only" bunny rabbit puppet - still stuck to its cardboard backing. According to him, the cloth-creature was missing an eye and its mouth was cock-eyed. So, this guy starts animating the puppet with his own voice, all muffled and slurred. In a split second, I went from zero to ludicrous speed. Hyena time! Since I was the only one busting a gut, I tried to contain myself. It didn't work. Honestly, that was the funniest thing I had seen / heard in a LONG time; I wish someone would have recorded it....

ECS EZ-Bundle 2 Entertainment PC

ECS EZ-Bundle 2 Entertainment PC 06/14/2004 01:13 PM

ezbuddie2l.jpg imageAlthough I was too excited at first, thinking that the ECS EZ-Bundle 2 small form factor PC had an integrated front-LCD panel, it's still a nice looking box, with the front display looking every bit the part of a stereo system component. It's actually fairly large for a SFF PC, but small enough for most I would imagine, especially since the bundled 17-inch LCD and other accessories means this is probably more for those who use their computer as their entire entertainment system and not part of a dedicated Home Theater PC setup.

Really, though, it'd be nice if someone would start putting a small LCD on the front of the boxes as a secondary display -- 640 x 480 would suffice -- so you could queue up movies or music, tweak settings, or pop out to the net for a second without having to disrupt the visuals on the primary display.

Meaning Mobile Entertainment

Meaning Mobile Entertainment 07/28/2004 01:20 PM

Justin Hall explains what he's about.....

Two new articles give some sense of what I trumpet as a freelance writer. I cover technology, digital culture, and electronic entertainment. What I get most excited about professionally these days is mobile multiplayer - I have the feeling like mobile phones have terrific potential for play, for poking fun, for horsing around. So I keep my eye out for signs that these devices are becoming less productive.

I found one of those signs recently, and finished an article about it this morning: Mobile Play by Mail - The future of wireless entertainment may well lie in some of the oldest modern games. Soon, your buddy list may light up with game moves as well as messages.

This was a fun article to write, because I had a chance to research some of the history of games played through the post. That's some dedicated gameplay! Filling out 3x5 cards and mailing them around - cards filled with orders and movements and even intrigue. Play by Mail games were an early way to enjoy social, multiplayer gaming before the internet. And I saw a company in Hong Kong that has instituted Play by Mail gaming for mobile devices and so this article is working to spell out some of the best potential for that technology.

For a broader view of the positive potential for mobile entertainment, check out my last article before that: Mobile Entertainment: The Power of Play. In that piece I argue that mobile entertainment serves a critical social function -- it will teach us how to be connected citizens.

Both of these articles were written for TheFeature.com, a Nokia-sponsored research publication about the mobile internet. I've been a contributing editor there since August 2003; moving and going to school has me scaled back to a sort of regular contributor. I look forward to continuing to write, and play in this area!

Palm Pilot

When I travel, I usually write everything that's super important to me down on a 8.5x11 piece of paper, fold it twice, and stick it in my pocket. That way, when I need to look up a phone number or jot down an address, I don't have to get out a notebook, my computer, or hunt around for a piece of scrap paper. And it won't ever get stolen like a cell phone or handheld might.

Online Games Of Skill vs. Online Games
Of Chance

Online Games Of Skill vs. Online Games
Of Chance
05/24/2004 04:40 AM
While the US has been notoriously tough on the idea of any online gambling in the US, there are a number of companies doing quite well in the somewhat "gray" area of online games of skill for money. These aren't games of chance, but still require players to put up money, and the winners go home with more than they put in. The difference, of course, is that the win is based (at least somewhat) on the skills of the players. However, this can be a very fine line. Most games involve a mix of skill and luck, and you can make the claim that classic gambling games like poker and blackjack require some amount of skill as well. Still, the online "games of skill" providers claim they're just like a typical sports association, like the US Tennis Association, that sets up tournaments and awards prizes to the winners - minus their own cut. Of course, they conveniently skip over the part about where the money comes from. With these online games, it is still a "pay to enter" sort of contest. Either way, it's not entirely clear how the legal issues will play out. Some states already bar such online games of skill, but many don't. Federal laws are still unclear, and the companies involved in this space are lobbying heavily to try to make the point that they should be allowed to continue where online gambling sites are forbidden.

Oneupweb, a world-class search engine optimization and marketing firm, today released a new white paper outlining its study of Fortune 100 Web sites and revealed that less than 10 percent use search engine optimization (SEO) effectively. And, more than 40 percent aren’t using SEO at all. The 2004 study also compares results to another Oneupweb study performed in 2002 and while numbers have improved, these global leaders are allowing other companies to usurp them online. The study titled, “Global Leaders Risk Losing Market Share,” is available at Oneupweb.com under “Articles.” [PRWEB Aug 30, 2004]
