Sharp's Zaurus SLC-860

Sharp's Zaurus SLC-860 11/14/2003 10:19 AM
From Sharp, the latest version of their Linux-based Zaurus PDA. The SL-C860 is an update of their SL-C760 and SL-C750 handhelds, and has a 400MHz processor, 128MB of RAM, and a 640x480 resolution LCD screen that swivels around to reveal a tiny keyboard. For whatever reason Sharp hasn't bothered to really market any of the handhelds in the Zaurus line in the States, and the SLC-860 will likely prove no different. Read...

And Here's What the Community Did

And Here's What the Community Did 03/19/2003 10:27 PM

And Here's What the Community Did

Well not only was I busy this weekend but others were too.  Here are some of the highlights:

The FurryGoat (I love that name) tells you how to add Feedster to Internet Explorer's search options using TweakUI.  [_Go_]

Feedster is increasingly being added as an option right next to the "Google It" links on blogs.  That's high praise.  Here are some examples:

  • FurryGoat
  • BunkoSquad (thanks Sooz!)
  • Vicky (a cool multi search engine interface)
  • (If you're adding Feedster to your blog like this, drop us a line and we'll link to you / add you to a list of "Blogs Supporting Feedster" that's coming out soon)

Ben Meadowcraft of the Mozilla Mycroft project is working on adding Feedster support to Mozilla's ability to drive Apple's Sherlock.  I'm not 100% sure on the status of this since I haven't personally tested it but if you want the .src and .png files for it drop me a line.  If Ben says its ok, I'll link to them as well.

The Amazing US contributed a really nice CSS design for our results that while we haven't had time to implement yet is coming.  Thanks!

I'm sure there's more going that I'm missing but this is a blog.  There's always more!

New PHP community site

New PHP community site 12/04/2003 09:33 PM

Via The Farm, Chris Shiflett is calling for assistance in setting up a new PHP community site to run along similar lines to use Perl. Chris has already secured an offer of hosting and support from O'Reilly and is now seeking offers of help from potential contributers. PHP has long needed a site of this kind (PHP Builder has lost a lot of momentum since being sold by Tim Perdue) so this could be a worth while project to get involved with if you have the time.

I wonder if Python would benefit from something like this? Python already has an excellent decentralised community centered mainly around the Python newsgroups, blogs and mailing lists, but it would be nice if Python.org provided more community oriented features.

A-6000_large.gif imageAria Digital has a new DAB radio out, this one made specifically for use with PCs or laptops over USB, called the A-6000. It follows Aria's "Global DAB" policy, too, which means that it uses both of the primary DAB bands (Band 111 and L-Band), allowing you to pick up DAB broadcasts pretty much anywhere they are sprayed out. It has both USB and SPDIF outs, and can record to MPEG2, MP3, or WAV, as well as work with the Electronic Programme Guide (like a DAB TiVo) for recording any shows you might miss. It's currently shipping for about £100.

How far does $6,000 go these days? To find out we asked Macworld contributing editors Adam C. Engst and Christopher Breen to assemble the perfect Mac-based home office -- but to bring it in under a $6,000 budget. To keep our shoppers on their toes, we added another twist -- we told Adam to shop as if he were a bargain-hunting do-it-yourselfer, while we asked Christopher to make his selections as if he were a hassle-loathing Mac user who wanted to buy everything, install it once, and never have to tinker with it again.
