GNUnet 0.7.0pre1 (Default branch)

GNUnet 0.7.0pre1 (Default branch) 04/01/2005 03:26 AM
Screenshot GNUnet is a peer-to-peer framework with focus on providing security. All peer-to-peer messages in the network are confidential and authenticated. The framework provides a transport abstraction layer and can currently encapsulate the network traffic in UDP (IPv4 and IPv6), TCP (IPv4 and IPv6), HTTP, or SMTP messages. GNUnet supports accounting to provide contributing nodes with better service. The primary service build on top of the framework is anonymous file sharing.
Changes:
This pre-release is the first release after the major code rewrite that is expected to address all of the legacy problems that could not be solved without changing the protocols and data formats used by GNUnet. Consequently, the code breaks compatibility with all previous versions. The pre-release also lacks a graphical user interface. The pre-release is made in order to bootstrap the network with the new protocols.

MuVo2 FM Joins Fruit Brigade

MuVo2 FM Joins Fruit Brigade 09/01/2004 12:01 PM

The iPod mini colors strike again, this time bringing down Creative's MuVo2, now available in five, easy-to-digest pastels. Well, and black. And it's possible white isn't technically a pastel, but still, these are clearly iPod inspired. The new MuVo2 version also will have a 5GB hard drive, instead of the previous 4GB version, and will now include a built-in FM receiver.

So far they're Japan only, going for around $250. The last MuVo2, if you'll remember, was almost universally adopted so that it could be broken open and its 4GB Microdrive scavenged for use in digital cameras. I would bet there is something - the lack of a proper Compact Flash interface, for instance - in these new models that will prevent that, but until an intrepid photographer hammers a new one open, we'll just have to wait and see. (Thanks, Jon!)

Ubuntu has been shipping free cd's of its distro for some time now - actually, sets containing a live (Knoppix-like - just boot, no install) CD and a 'regular' CD, for Intel, Apple, and AMD64 architectures. They're in fact shipping *loads* of such cd's - for free - if you go to their shipping page, the default number to order is 10. Probably not a bad way to introduce acquaintances to Linux.

Interface designer Matthew Thomas rips into Ubuntu and GNOME. Most of these complaints can be summarized as "GNOME isn't Mac OS" (no, really?). He's in for some serious frustration if he thinks he can get 15-year-old conventions like menu bars inside windows changed; the GNOME project has had years to copy the Mac but they made a conscious decision not to.
