Hacking MT book coming soon

Hacking MT book coming soon 04/06/2005 05:22 PM

I've been working on a few chapters for this book going on at least a year now, if not more. Let's put it this way: when we started, we had barely any contact with folks at Six Apart and I had to strain my friendship with the Trotts to get them to answer questions about the someday-beta MT 3.0 we heard was on the horizon. When I wrote my chapters, MT 2.6 was new, but Ben and Jay completely rewrote the rest of the book when 3.1 was released (and two authors ended up employed by 6A so they know every in and out of the software).

Don't listen to what Ben says here, he was a superhero (along with Jay) that saved the project and made it what it is.

46-book best-of-Heinlein coming

46-book best-of-Heinlein coming 04/08/2005 12:19 PM
Cory Doctorow: Science fiction legend Robert A. Heinlein's agent, his executor and a Heinlein scholar have blessed a 46-volume "definitive" edition of his works to be published by Meisha Merlin, in a 5,000-copy limited edition. Weirdly, they're leading with I Will Fear No Evil, a book that I think of as not just weak, but actually embarrassing (there's lots of Heinlein I love, but the 500-page bricks he wrote later in life are not among them). It's tempting to make a crack about there being only 5,000 people around who'd shell out for I Will Fear No Evil, but the fact is that if I had a bigger place, I'd be seriously considering buying this set.
The project will consist of 46 titles spanning the entire writing career of the legendary SF author. The Virginia Edition will contain all of Heinlein's novels and short stories; all of his nonfiction titles; several volumes of his letters and personal correspondence; and the vast majority of his interviews, social commentaries, speeches and articles, the site reported.

Product Image: Google Hacks: 100
Industrial-Strength Tips & Tools by Tara Calishain & Rael
Dornfest

The Internet puts a wealth of information at your fingertips, and all you have to know is how to find it. Google is your ultimate research tool--a search engine that indexes more than 2.4 billion web pages, in more than 30 languages, conducting more than 150 million searches a day. The more you know about Google, the better you are at pulling data off the Web. You've got a cadre of techniques up your sleeve--tricks you've learned from practice, from exchanging ideas with others, and from plain old trial and error--but you're always looking for better ways to search. It's the "hacker" in you: not the troublemaking kind, but the kind who really drives innovation by trying new ways to get things done. If this is you, then you'll find new inspiration (and valuable tools, too) in Google Hacks from O'Reilly's new Hacks Series.

Google hacks are for real

Google hacks are for real 08/06/2004 09:40 AM
Google hacks are for real, regardless of what some uber-hackers may think or say. They can produce passwords, user IDs, credit card numbers, Social Security numbers, bank account numbers and routing codes, and more. They can also be used to troll for vulnerabilities. One quick example: using one of the simplest Google advanced operators in combination with another operator, I quickly found a number of Microsoft IIS 6.0 Authentication Manager pages exposed to the Internet on Army, Navy, state, and federal agency sites. In fact, finding the sites proved to be much easier than alerting them to the vulnerability.

I woke up to a fabulous / . review of Google Hacks.
Google Hacks by Tara Calishain and Rael Dornfest and published by O'Reilly will appeal to an even wider audience, I can imagine buying this for friends who haven't cottoned on to 'net searching at all and friends who complain "Google returns too many sites." People who are afraid to code shouldn't be put off by the "Hacks" in the title: O'Reilly have obviously taken a wider meaning of "hack" than just a neat piece of code. This book is a marvelous compendium of tips and tricks for Google, ranging from simple ways of getting the search results you want, through using Google's newer services such as phone books and image search, all the way to advanced ways of using scrapers and the Google API.
O'Reilly just posted some of the Google Hacks online in their entirety. I chose one of my favourites, "NoXML, Another SOAP::Lite Alternative".

Google Hacks is mentioned in an article titled "Fishing for Information? Try Better Bait" in tomorrow's NYT Circuits.
A new book, "Google Hacks: 100 Industrial-Strength Tips and Tools," by Tara Calishain and Rael Dornfest (O'Reilly & Associates), is the latest resource in a growing industry to help people become better online searchers. It catalogs ways to uncover nuggets of information. Although a large part of the book is intended for programmers who adapt Google's search services for their own Web sites, there is much in it for everyday users.

It offers multiple search features like the ability to search images and news groups. However it's true power lies in it's powerful commands that can be used and misused.I am writing this article on the basis of my experience using google and trying out ideas when i am bored. Now enough of lecturing...let's get down to business ;) (Kevin Christley)

Is Google The Second Coming Of Apple?

Is Google The Second Coming Of Apple? 05/05/2004 12:31 PM
There's been way too much press coverage surrounding the whole Google IPO "event." I've been trying to avoid most of it, unless it really has something new or interesting to say. The Baltimore Sun, though, makes the comparison between Google now and Apple in the 80s. The companies do have similar devoted fans, and the article suggests that the Google IPO filing is the equivalent of Apple's 1984 ad. This seems a bit unfortunate - as the Apple ad meant the beginning of a new world of useful personal computers - and the Google IPO doesn't seem to mean the beginning of much at all. However, the article does point out the similarities between the idealistic "we're different, and we're changing the world" statements made by Steve Jobs in the 80's and Larry Page last week. Things never quite worked out the way Jobs predicted, so hopefully Google's results are a bit better.

Google Book

Google Book 06/16/2002 11:50 AM
via Rael Dornfest we learn that Tara Calishan is writing a book on Google: As most of you know, I write stuff. And soon I'll be helping put together a book on search engines. Now that the Google API has been released, books on search engines are much more than "use this search technique" (though those are important too.) Now people can put programs together that do Cool Search Things. If you know of a cool Google technique -- an interesting use of the API, a search trick you think is nifty -- send it in. (I already know about Googlewhacks, Googlematic, Google Smackdown, and Google results by e-mail!) ALSO, if you have a GOOGLE WISH -- the thought, "Wow, I wish I could do X with Google," send that in too. I might be able to help make your Google Wish come true!Aww, I wanted to write that book. Anyway, keep sending in your cool Google tools, techniques and wishes. Thanks!

Google and Search Inside the Book

Google and Search Inside the Book 10/30/2003 10:22 AM
You probably know by now that Amazon has released the first of its A9 search offerings: Search Inside the Book. (If you don't, basically when you search on Amazon it searches the full text of thousands of books, and points you not only to the book, but to scanned copies of all the pages that match your search.) So what should Google do? This is a perfect time to cut a deal with Amazon: Amazon lets them index the text of all these books, and in return, Google sends tons of customers to Amazon's door. Putting the books in the search results wouldn't be any different than the search results already provided by Amazon, so there wouldn't be any copyright or lost-sales problems. Despite the amazingness of the Web, there's still some stuff you can find only in books. Google wouldn't be living up to their mission (to organize all the world's information) if they passed up this amazing opportunity....
