while a couple were pretty good I don’t think they’re going into

had a blast; concerts are almost always worth going to. Herewith some

Virus Inflicts James Joyce on Mobile Phone Users The first
ever computer virus that can infect mobile phones has been discovered,
anti-virus software developers said today, rendering many phones
virtually useless.
The virus was apparently released in time for the 100th anniversary of
the eponymous literary holiday. It infects the Symbian operating
system that is used in several makes of mobiles, notably the Nokia
brand, and propagates through the new bluetooth wireless technology
that is in several new mobile phones.

Anne Applebaum explains why we should
write our senators and representative
today
06/16/2004 03:33 AMTo understand the magnitude of what may have gone on in America's
secret prisons, you don't need special security clearance or inside
information. Anyone who wants to connect the dots can do it. To see
what I mean, review the content of a few items now easily found on the
Internet. .... connect the dots: They lead from the White House to the
Pentagon to Abu Ghraib, and from Abu Ghraib back to military
intelligence and thus to the Pentagon and the White House. They don't,
it is true, make a complete picture. They don't actually reveal
whether direct White House and Pentagon orders set off a chain of
events leading to the abuses at Abu Ghraib, prisoner deaths in
Afghanistan or other uses of torture we haven't learned about yet. But
who will fill in the blanks? Here is the tragedy: Despite the easy
availability of evidence, almost nobody has an interest in pushing the
investigation as far as it should go. ... in the end, it is public
opinion that matters, and it is on public opinion that the fate of any
further investigations now depends. Voters have some items of
information available to them, as listed above. Voters -- ultimately
the most important source of pressure on democratic politicians -- can
petition their congressmen, their senators and their president for
more. If they don't, the elections will be held, the subject will
change. Without a real national debate, without congressional
approval, without much discussion of what torture actually means and
why it has so long been illegal at home and abroad, a few secret
committees will have changed the character of this country.
Applebaum's brilliant essay motivated me to write Senator Feinstein
and Senator Boxer again -- I hope it has a similar effect on everyone
else who reads it....

Ultima preservation efforts: a guide
07/18/2004 08:45 AMNelson has wirtten a fantastic post about the modern disposition of
the Ultima games, including unauthorised bundles of the game's many
incarnations along with easy-play emulators for running them on modern
hardware.
The most impressive is the Ultima Classics collection. "Sedryn Tyros"
has collected the Ultima games and distributed them in a bundle along
with DOSBox setups that make it easy to run the games. His supplement
also includes original pre-PC versions of the early games, often
better than the PC ports, along with the emulators you need to play
them on a PC. Alas, this collection is completely unauthorized and
you'll have to scour your back alley's bittorrent site to find it.
Another option is fan-made reconstructions of the game engines. The
best is Exult for Ultima VII, a portable engine that runs the classic
game on many platforms (including Xbox!). Just take the open source
game engine, copy over the assets from your Ultima Collection CD, and
you're in business.

Those clever devils at Customized
Classics
Those clever devils at Customized
Classics
12/10/2003 04:20 PMWhen I first saw Customized
Classics a few weeks ago I felt like kicking myself. It's hard for
most people to understand what "public domain" really means, and what
value it can give us as a culture, and directly as capitalists and
entrepreneurs.
Project Gutenberg has recently
uploaded their 10,000th public domain book, and Brewster and the gang are working
on the "million book project". To demonstrate the potential of the
public domain, and show people what movies, music, and stories used to
be like when there was an active public domain (that at one time was
only 14 to 28 years old -- imagine making new movies and music from
60s stuff totally free of copyright), I've been kicking around ideas
of how to exploit these free works (again, for demonstration purposes
more than anything else).
One idea I called "judge a book by its cover." Take these public
domain classics, create exciting, artistic cover designs (perhaps by
famous designers), and sell them via the new crop of print-on-demand services. A few months ago there was
news of Oprah's book club coming back to life and only selecting
classics from the public domain, and how publishers would have to rush
to meet the demands, but how anyone could print them up.
I've been coming up with other ideas but nothing is as good as customized
classics. They just do a search-and-replace on names of your
choosing, and spit out a custom book to you for 25 bucks or so.
Brilliant and simple.
