IFD-iV Flash Drives Masquerade as ATA
Hard Drives
07/15/2004 08:59 AM
For embedded computing
hackers, mass storage (like hard drives) is often the most frustrating
piece of the puzzle, as the fragile and power-hungry spin of the hard
drive is usually the last non-solid-state part in the whole
deployment. And while most engineers will just use a Compact Flash
card, sometimes the only option is an ATA (hard drive) connection;
that's where the IFD-iV flash memory parts from IO Data Device
Corporation come in. Basically just flash memory drives, the defining
feature of the IFD-iVs (besides fairly rugged operating
specifications) is that they use the standard ATA connection of a hard
drive, meaning they can be deployed in place of hard drives when
necessary. Models up to 2GB in capacity will be available for around
$2,100 -- maybe we'll just deal with the fragile hard drives
instead.

files in your pocket: A good article on the ubiquity of the Flash
drive, and where the technology is headed.
[...] some industry insiders see an even bigger future for the tiny
devices. Instead of taking a laptop on trips, it's possible to just
stick a flash drive into a pocket or purse and turn whatever computer
you sit down at into a copy of your own.
Standing in the way of this enticing vision are two S-words:
standardization and security, says Steffen Hellmold, president of the
USB Flash Drive Alliance, another industry group trying to get
manufacturers to agree on setting standards for applications on flash

Newer, Smaller Flash Cards: C-Flash
03/14/2005 06:03 PM
Pretec Electronics
Corporation, apparently unaware that more than eight competing formats
already exist in this market, has developed a new flash memory card
called the C-Flash. Smaller than a dime, Pretec seems to be gambling
on the "hope your customers lose your product and don't learn from
their mistakes" business model. Cards with capacities up to 1GB will
be available by June, and they're sampling them in mobile phones,
which is just about the only place I'd want to see one. Honestly,
though, there comes a point (perhaps when you require magnification
equipment) when it's just too small. A note to these
companies with the perpetual smaller-is-better mentalities: Just
because I might one day be able to carry all of my media collection as
well as the Library of Congress on a card the size of an eyelash
doesn't mean I'll want to, dig?
While on the topic of Flash Memory formats, now seems like a good
time to mention LIVEdigitally's Flash Card roundup, wherein they break
down the Flash Jungle into small, manageable pieces.

roundup
04/13/2005 04:36 AMUSB flash drives have become more common, due both to their utility
and decreasing prices. They are a great tool for transporting files
around, especially when the network is down. They are supported on
Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux right out of the box. And best of all,
prices have come down considerably since our review last year.
In this edition, we pit ten drives against one another, testing
them for durability, style, construction, bundled software, and
read/write speed. And once again, the flash drive RAID array makes an
appearance. So if you are looking to get your first flash drive, or
are thinking about replacing your small and aging USB 1.1 flash drive,
you've come to the right place.

The Vosonic X'S-Drive Pro VP 300 is 40GB external
hard drive that is clunky, cheap-looking, has a crappy text-only
integrated screen, plays MP3s, but not WMA, AAC, or OGG Vorbis, and
can only read from one card from its card reader at a time. So why
would any photographer want it? Because it's cheap, it does the
primary job it was designed to do (act as remote backup for memory
cards), and can accept as many additional 2.5-inch laptop hard drives
as you want to swap into it, meaning that all other things aside, you
can purchase this single $335 drive and continue to upgrade it for
only the price of additional hard drives.

Okay, it would seem we have a serious problem. I love
flash drives as much as the next guy (I use them when I need to, sure,
but only when necessary), but when one of our nation's most precious
resources - college football players - start shoplifting from
Wal-Marts just to feed their portable data addition, well... something
has to be done.
According to Durham County court records,
he is accused of stealing "an assortment of jump drives" -- portable
data storage units that plug into PCs -- Sept. 12 at Wal-Mart at New
Hope Commons in Durham. The computer equipment was valued at
$374.49.
We
need college football, and if these "jump drives" (known on
the street as 'flash,' 'hotplug,' and 'taking the D train') are going
to affect our young mens' ability to play ball, I say we ban them as
soon as possible before we wake up to a society plagued by thousands
of "pluggies."

It's
sad that these days, almost anything that refers to itself as a 'spy

So while this "SPY DISK with card reader" isn't amazing, it is
surprisingly enough that it actually does something cool at all.
Available with internal memory sizes of 128MB or 256MB, the cap-end
also functions as an SD/MMC card reader. You can't copy
directly from the SD cards to the internal memory -- you'll have to
copy to your PC, then back -- but it's a pretty great idea in general,
even if it doesn't shoot lasers or eject poison gas. And hey, it's USB
2.0! Maybe the cheap gear is finally starting to see the light of fast
transfer rates.

07/08/2004 03:49 PMImation Corp. announced on Thursday that it's now shipping the 1GB
version of its
USB 2.0
Swivel Flash Drive, which weighs less than an ounce and is the
size of a AA battery, with a swivel cap hinged to it instead of an
easily lost pop-off cap. When the line of diminutive drives were
first announced in March, 128MB, 256MB and 512MB models were
initially available. Like its siblings, the 1GB version reads and
writes data at 8MB and 7MB per second, respectively, and plugs into
any USB 1.1 or 2.0 port. The suggested retail price is US$360.
