OWL - Ornithological World Literature Database
http://www.birdlit.org/

The American Ornithological Union, the British Ornithological Union and Birds Australia have launched OWL, the Ornithological World Literature database, freely available. OWL is a successor to ROLO, Recent Literature of Ornithology Online and the earlier, printed Recent Literature of Ornithology. The database is hosted by the Edward Grey Institute of Field Ornithology, based in the Zoology Department of Oxford University, UK. At present the database contains 19,000 records, with an emphasis on serials and gray literature. The intent is to extend the database retrospectively to 1950. The sponsors expect the database to contain 100,000 entries by the end of 2004.

Open Access STM Literature
http://www.economist.com/science/displayStory.cfm?story_id=3061258

The more than 2,000 publishers offering STM (scientific, technological and medical) literature collectively publish 1.2 million articles a year in about 16,000 periodical journals, but their success is being challenged by the "open access" movement. In the U.K., the House of Commons Science and Technology Committee says that the country's universities should be required to ensure that all their research papers are available free online, and that government-funded research grants ought to include free access to the findings a condition of the awards. In the U.S., the House of Representatives' Committee on Appropriations approved a provision in a bill that backs open access to material published by the National Institutes of Health (NIH); and the leading research associations of Germany, France and Switzerland have signed the so-called Berlin Declaration calling for free access to research findings. Barbara Meredith, a vice-president at the Association of American Publishers, a trade group, says that the open access movement could undermine the sustainability of the publishing industry, even though the entire open access literature currently represents less than 1% of what is published. The Economist magazine comments: "Prestige has its uses and the open-access journals will, no doubt, establish a pecking-order among themselves fairly quickly. But for prestige at any price, time is probably up.

Researching Medical Literature on the Internet -- 2003 Update
http://www.llrx.co m/features/medical2003.htm

The proliferation of medical web sites is good news for the researcher with a small to non-existent medical collection. Legal researchers often have to consult medical sources, so it is fortunate that the Internet provides free access to a great deal of the medical literature, either in full text or citation/abstract format, and that it offers search capabilities good enough to fulfill most information needs. In addition, public demand for medical information on the World Wide Web is constant. Many professionally-oriented health care sites have evolved to meet consumer needs, and consumer-oriented sites often include professional literature. Journals, dictionaries, textbooks, indexes - all can be found on the Net in growing numbers. The sources are varied; they include publishers, government agencies, professional organizations, and health libraries.

Weinberger: "free access to every work
of creativity in the world is a better
world"
09/21/2004 04:55 PM
Cory Doctorow: David Weinberger, author of the brilliant and seminal Small Pieces Loosely Joined, has posted a draft of a great speech on copyright that he's giving at the World Economic Forum in NYC tomorrow:
[F]or one moment, I'd like you to perform an exercise in selective attention. Forget every other consideration — even though they're fair and important considerations — and see if you can acknowledge that a world in which everyone has free access to every work of creativity in the world is a better world. Imagine your children could listen to any song ever created anywhere. What a blessing that would be!

...We publish stuff that gets its meaning and its reality by being read, viewed or heard. An unpublished novel is about as meaningful and real as an imaginary novel. It needs its readers to be. But readers aren't passive consumers. We reimagine the book, we complete the vision of the book. Readers appropriate works, make them their own. Listeners and viewers, too. In making a work public, artists enter into partnership with their audience. The work succeeds insofar as the audience makes it their own, takes it up, understands it within their own unpredictable circumstances. It leaves the artist's hands and enters our lives. And that's not a betrayal of the work. That's its success. It succeeds insofar as we hum it, quote it, appropriate it so thoroughly that we no longer remember where the phrase came from. That's artistic success, although it's a branding failure.

Maybe can we get 11th?

Maybe can we get 11th? 08/10/2004 12:44 PM

John Dvorak has put up a list of the 10 most important pieces of software. Needless to say Phtoshop is on the list - but nothing from Macromedia.

Before there was Flash - there was Director. Before Director is was called VideoWorks.

VideoWorks should be #11 on Dvorak's list.

[via Anil]

Marc's final funny note: Before Photoshop was offered to Adobe - Thomas Knoll brought it to us - MacroMind. But we were too busy with VideoWorks - and I think it landed in a fine home.

Most of the software on Dvorak's list are the originals - Visicalc instead of Lotus 1-2-3, WordPerfect instead of Word, Mosaic instead of Netscape.

That's why it should be VideoWorks - instead of Director or Flash.

Please email me directly with what your problem was and how you solved, and I'll get in touch. The goal is to take common problems and attach a real person to them. It's a trend that began in the era of videotape but has accelerated with DVD's because they are inexpensive to duplicate and ship.

What individual exceptions there are I don't know--I am sure they exist, and I would love to hear from them--but on the whole the American press has not seen fit to start its own story over after the attacks of 2001, just to see if "journalism" comes out in the same place, if "ethics" are the ones that were adequate before, if duty to nation looks the same, if observerhood still fits.

In response to rising -- "out of control" -- costs of scholarly publications, the University of California Digital Library's eScholarship Repository (http://repositories.cdlib.org/) offers faculty a central online location for everything from technical reports to peer-reviewed journals and edited volumes, says Catherine Candee, director of scholarly communication and publishing initiatives at UCDL. It provides university departments, centers and research units direct control over creation and dissemination of the full range of scholarly output, from pre-publication materials through journals and peer-reviewed series, and -- beginning in May 2004 - posting of legally available UC authors' commercially published articles. In addition to practical, day-to-day benefits and savings (in a little less than two years, the repository has seen almost 500,000 downloads of entire papers or articles), serendipitous benefits have surfaced. For example, the UCDL now boasts an infrastructure that allows administrators and faculty to focus on creating systemic change in the way authors and readers work. "We have technologies that allow broader, freer, more creative uses of text and data and we can begin to fashion badly needed services for the classroom, office and lab," says Candee. This will be added to Academic Resources 2004 Internet MiniGuide.
