Benjamin Moore Pocket Palette

Benjamin Moore Pocket Palette 09/03/2004 08:44 AM

pocket_palette_lg.jpg imageMost people won't have a use for Benjamin Moore's new $300 Pocket Palette, but there's no disputing it's a pretty bitchin'. The Pocket Palette electronically matches any color to the closest Benjamin Moore sample in their catalog, so instead of carrying around hundreds of swatches to get an exact match, you just hold it up to a wall (or whatever), push a button, and save it for later. It would be better if it matched multiple palettes, like Pantone and all those other commercial and non-commercial (and non-paint) libraries, but it's a start. In a few months I wouldn't be surprised to see the very same thing built in a generic version.

Benjamin Rosenbaum, whose knockout story "The Ant King: A California Fairytale" convinced me that he was desitined to be one of the great talents in science fiction, has Creative-Commons-licensed his story "The Orange," which originally appeared in Harper's Magazine (selling an sf story to Harper's is itself quite a coup!).
An orange ruled the world.

It was an unexpected thing, the temporary abdication of Heavenly Providence, entrusting the whole matter to a simple orange.

The orange, in a grove in Florida, humbly accepted the honor. The other oranges, the birds, and the men in their tractors wept with joy; the tractors' motors rumbled hymns of praise.

Airplane pilots passing over would circle the grove and tell their passengers, "Below us is the grove where the orange who rules the world grows on a simple branch." And the passengers would be silent with awe.

This week we had a very informative discussion about messaging with Benjamin Mitchell and John Bristowe (with a special appearance by Michèle Leroux Bustamante in the second half). Benjamin and John cut through the WS-AlphabetSoup set of specifications, avoid frequent references to SOA and cover what the benefits of Web services are, why you might want to use WSE (security, policy, addressing and support for TCP), how to use Web services in your applications today and where Microsoft is heading with Web services and Indigo in the future.

Spyford Wallace Agrees To Stop... For
Now
01/04/2005 12:53 PM
Sanford Wallace, of course, was probably the main source of spam in the late 90s before plenty of others jumped into the spam game. While he then claimed to have "reformed" and left the business to start a (failed) night club, he stepped back into the "annoy the hell out of users" scene earlier this year by getting into the spyware business. Even better, he not only put spyware on your computer, but also offered to sell you software to get his spyware off your computer -- even though the software didn't work. The government didn't look too kindly on that sort of business and went after him. According to the AP (who seems to have misspelled Wallace's name), Wallace has agreed to stop putting spyware on computers. So, now, will he go around claiming he's a "reformed" spyware purveyor until the next method of annoying users comes along and he jumps on that bandwagon too?

More Than Wells Are Stuck In The Sand
Over Iraqi Oil

More Than Wells Are Stuck In The Sand
Over Iraqi Oil
11/10/2003 11:31 PM
Iraq has a lot of oil, estimated at 112.5 billion barrels in proven reserves which is the world's second-largest after Saudi Arabia's. As many as 220 billion barrels are considered probable additional Iraqi reserves. Before the current war, Iraq was producing 2.5 million barrels of oil per day, with only 1.7 million of this output authorized under the U.N. imposed "Oil-For-Food" economic sanctions. At an average price of $25 per barrel, Iraq was making $43 million per day in sanctioned sales and $20 million per day in unsanctioned ones. The United States was the biggest importer of Iraqi crude, importing 366,000 barrels a day directly into the U.S. during December 2002, with an estimated third of Iraqi oil output (800,000+ barrels per day) ultimately ending up in the United States after intermediate processing by third countries. Thus on the eve of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Americans were paying Saddam around $21 million per day or $620 million per month or around $7.5 billion per year. The rest of the world was paying him twice this much for a total of around $25 billion per year. Such "tough" economic sanctions led in some American political circles to (somewhat hypocritically, considering the level of our Iraqi imports) have contempt for the United Nations and concern over the amount of petromoney available for hostile military buildup and WMD and even terrorist bankrolling... And so there was a war.
