The Virtual Mobile Virtual Network
Operator From 7-Eleven
04/27/2004 05:27 PMMobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) are nothing new. Virgin,
both in the UK and the US, has been quite successful creating their
own mobile phone carrier, despite not having a network of their own,
but simply handling the branding and management, while leaving all the
technology issues to a network operator partner. So far, most MVNOs
seem to be targeting the youth market (often with "pre-paid plans"),
and considering just how
lucrative
that market seems these days, it's no surprise that plenty of
others want into the market. However, operating the whole MVNO is
probably a lot of work, so now we're getting to the point where you
have
virtual MVNOs (VMVNOs) who will do all the work for a
company, and simply slap their brand on the final product. That seems
to be what's happening with convenience store 7-Eleven, who has
announced plans to
sell pre-paid
mobile phones and service under the "Speak Out" brand - though,
all the work appears to be done by Ztar Mobile. Other retailers are
quickly expected to follow. Wal-Mart is at the top of the list, with
Costco and Home Depot also apparently considering their own mobile
phone offerings. The idea is to target younger users, or those with
bad credit histories, who can simply pick up a phone at the store, and
use it until their minutes run out, at which point they can top it up
again - back at the store, of course.

Virtual Reference So Virtual We Couldn't
Use It
07/07/2004 01:15 AMAnother virtual reference failure tonight. Kailee was reading about
Neti and Ditto, the cloned monkeys, when she asked if we could find a
picture of them. After a couple of fruitless attempts on the web,
I again suggested she try my System's virtual reference
project since we still had 15 minutes before they "closed" for the
night.
So we fired up the URL and after a couple of confusing attempts to
connect, we waited for a librarian to "answer" our call. And we
waited. And we waited. And we waited. We finally gave up and submitted
the question via email, only to be told we'd probably receive an
answer in 1-2 business days.
It's extremely frustrating to try to teach Kailee to turn to
librarians online for help only to keep running into problems and dead
ends when she actually tries to do this. If she didn't have librarian
parents, I'll bet she'd be giving up on us now.

Virtual PC for Mac 7.0
Virtual PC for Mac 7.0
03/28/2005 01:09 PMVirtual PC for Mac 7.0 is the latest version of this emulation
program, and the first to be released by Microsoft after taking it
over from Connectix.
Installation is a two-step process, which takes about an hour. First,
the Virtual PC must be installed, the computer restarted, then Windows
XP Professional can be installed. In fact, you can install multiple
versions of Windows (if you have copies) by setting up different
virtual machines; you can then choose which virtual machine to start
up.
Upon launching Microsoft Virtual PC for Mac 7.0, the standard Windows
XP desktop appears, which can be run in a window or in full-screen
mode. Toggling back and forth between Windows and Safari is easy.
Within a separate Virtual PC Settings window, you can modify the
virtual level of RAM and VRAM, the virtual machine's networking
settings, and more.
The main feature of Virtual PC is that it offers the Windows platform
on a Mac. This can useful for browsing the Internet, or for web
developers who need to see how websites look using both Safari and
Windows.
Microsoft's Virtual PC for Mac 7.0 website offers e-mail support,
troubleshooting newsgroups, and a knowledge base of helpful answers to
support questions.
Virtual PC 7 runs best on a Power Mac G5; in fact, it’s been optimized
for the G5. It can be installed on other Mac’s, but be prepared for
slow performance. Spymac installed it on an older eMac with a 700MHZ
processor. While the application is being used on a daily basis, it is
incredibly slow. However, it’s still cheaper than buying and
maintaining a real PC.
Pros:
Provides Windows XP on your Mac
Easy to move back and forth between OS’s
Cheaper than a PC
Cons:
Slow performance, especially with non-G5 computers
Installation took too long

Introducing the new Virtual Transgenic Fly Lab. The lab
will familiarize you with the science and techniques used to make
transgenic flies. Transgenic organisms, which contain DNA that is
inserted experimentally, are used to study many biological processes.
In this lab, you will create a transgenic fly to study circadian
rhythms. The fly glows only when a certain gene involved in circadian
rhythms is activated. After making the glowing fly, you will use it to
explore basic principles of circadian biology and genetics. This has
been added to Biological
Informatics Subject Tracer™ Information Blog.

The First Virtual Telco?
The First Virtual Telco?
05/24/2004 12:46 PMI think we're watching the birth of the the first 21st-century phone
company. A telco that virtualizes and outsources everything,
except for a core IP backbone and a set of valuable business
relationships and expertise. A company built for an all-VOIP,
converged, wired/wireless telecom industry.
Not Vonage or Skype. I'll give you a hint: it was also the
first great 20th century phone company. It's AT&T.
AT&T is hollowing itself out -- and that's a good thing.
Under Dave Dorman, AT&T has invested heavily in building a true
all-IP backbone and deploying VOIP offerings. Following the sale
of AT&T Wireless to Cingular and AT&T's subsequent deal with
Sprint PCS, AT&T is poised to offer a full suite of wireless
offerings without the cost of owning a cellular network. And it
is still the biggest player in the lucrative business services market,
with a national brand second to none.
Not that there aren't challenges. AT&T's consumer
long-distance business is dying. Its efforts to preserve
government-mandated wholesale discounts are collapsing. The FCC
shot down its attempt to treat VOIP backbone traffic an information
service, exempt from paying access charges. It faces big
competitors like Verizon, SBC, and Comcast, who control the last-mile
pipes into the home. It still has plenty of fat and legacy
infrastructure. And the company has more than its share of
self-inflicted wounds. There is no guarantee AT&T will
survive the next five years as an independent company.
Nonetheless, the AT&T of today comes closer than any of its rivals
to my vision of the phone company of tomorrow.

Sometimes a textual
description is enough to get me excited, before even seeing the
picture:
Virtual butterflies that flutter about in space
and react to the presence of visitors—if you touch them or try to
catch them, they fly away; but if you hold your hand steady, they
return and, with a little luck, alight on your outstretched
hand.
The possibilities for such technology (flowers,
frogs, ballerinas, frightened children) is staggering, or at least
lilting. This is the sort of interactivity and brilliance that makes
me want to throw money I don't have at people I don't know.

In the new issue of Popular Science, Jessican Snyder Sachs has an
interesting and well-written article about virtual autopsies as a
permanent record for pathologists. Michael Thali and the
Virtopsy research team at the
University of Bern, Switzerland use computed tomography (CT) and
magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to create full-body scans of murder
victims.
Besides being a
bloodless approach to an otherwise messy job, the digitally preserved
bodies of the Virtopsy Project have the added benefit of permanency.
“Murder victims have the unfortunate habit of
decomposing,” Thali notes.

12/17/2004 06:43 PMI love these new "timed team event" shows like Monster Garage, Monster House, and Extreme Makeover: Home
Edition. In these shows, a team has to build or convert something
in a set time limit, usually five days. There's usually a lot of
drama, yelling, and screaming, but they invariably end up with
something beautiful at the end that just blows everyone away.
Why not Monster App? Pick a charity organization that needs a new
Web site. We could start the show by sitting at the old Web site and
laughing at how inept it is. Then we'd get to work.
We'd have five days to build a complete new Web site incorporating
all their requirements (which wouldn't be allowed to change —
ha!). I can see the late nights, the frayed nerves, the screaming
matches when the app starts throwing parse errors 10 minutes before
the red countdown clock reaches zero...just before we unveil a cool
new Web site that just makes everyone realize how wicked awesome we
all are.
I think you could make a show out of this. I'd watch it.
