Microsoft has settled its patent dispute with Sony/Philips, who acquired a company called Intertrust solely for its patent on DRM, which conflicted with the patent that Microsoft got when it took a controlling interest in another company called ContentGuard.
Microsoft is paying $440m to settle its long-running digital rights management (DRM) patent infringement dispute with Intertrust. The one-off pay-out means that Microsoft customers can use their software "as they are intended to be used without requiring a license from InterTrust".

Lawyers Who Got Microsoft To Settle Want
$258 Million In Fees

Lawyers Who Got Microsoft To Settle Want
$258 Million In Fees
05/12/2004 02:08 PM
There are plenty of stories about class action cases where it's the lawyers who walk off with the real prize, where those involved in the case get pennies for the dollars they lost. Now, the California lawyers who convinced Microsoft to settle their anti-trust suit say they deserve $258 million in fees - approximately 25% of the entire settlement. When broken out into pieces, it means $3,000 per hour for the lead attorney, $2,000 per hour for 34 other lawyers and an impressive $1,000 per hour for administrative work. Microsoft, of course, claims the fees seem a bit high - but you could make the same argument about some of their software. Meanwhile, Microsoft may get off without paying the $16 or so they owe you for overcharging on Windows if you don't fill out the claim form. Yes, that $16 they overcharged you for Windows represents just under one minute of administrative work done on this case.

Did Microsoft Pay $12.75 Million To
Opera To Settle Interoperability
Problems?

Did Microsoft Pay $12.75 Million To
Opera To Settle Interoperability
Problems?
05/24/2004 12:27 PM
Back in 2001, there was a big stink when people realized that anyone visiting MSN with an Opera browser were told that they needed to "upgrad e" their browser to IE in order to view the page. People immediately (and perhaps rightfully so) started accusing Microsoft of unfairly leveraging their monopoly power to shut out a perfectly reasonable (and more standards compliant) Opera browser. Last week, Opera put out a short press release saying that they had received $12.75 million to settle a problem, but didn't indicate from whom. Now, people are starting to say that it was Microsoft, paying off Opera to avoid a lawsuit on the issue - which, to this day, they insist was simply a programming error, and not an attempt to get Opera users to switch to IE.
