Why Stock Markets Crash : Critical Events in
Complex Financial Systems. Professor
Didier Sornette
of UCLA has some
very interesting things to say about stock markets.
In his book, he explains how his
"theory of cooperative herding and imitation [...] has detected
the existence of a clear signature of herding in the decay of the US
S&P500 index since August 2000 with high statistical significance,
in the form of strong log-periodic components."
Although his timing has been just a bit early, the theory, the
predictions to date and the pictures are all pretty uncanny. This is
easily the most interesting book on the stock market I have ever read
and provides interesting and believable hypotheses about things I
never imagined could have rigorous explanations. For an overview,
here is an
interview with the author.

The Future of Work
The Future of Work
04/09/2004 04:10 PMCongrats to Tom Malone for
the launch of The Future of
Work, a terriffic look at how decentralization is affecting the
nature of the organization, the structure of business and our work
lives.
When we first launched Lotus Notes in the early 90's, it
was an era of Reengineering
The Corporation, in which companies were reducing the cost of
coordination internally through business process
reengineering. Companies embraced Lotus Notes, an advanced
communications technology for the time, reflecting
the changing nature of the organization
from centralized hierarchical structures
toward more decentralized work flows.
When I left Iris/Lotus/IBM in 1997, I did so primarily
because in '95-'96 I saw, in our customers, the beginnings of
something quite significant: they were extending their core business
processes and practices outward to partners, suppliers, and in some
cases even customers. When we lau
nched Groove's V1 product in 2001 and began selling it to
enterprises, our primary focus was on how it was an advance in
decentralized communications that would reduce the cost of
coordination externally in a manner not possible with
technologies primarily designed for enterprise use. The fact
that enterprises and government have embraced Groove truly reflects
the changing nature of business from
centralized structures toward networked, decentralized
organizational relationships.
Over the past 12-18 months, we've seen some other very significant
technology-catalyzed changes occurring in business, in society, and in
our everyday lives. Last year was most certainly the "year of
the laptop". Broadband is now ever-more pervasive,
and 2003 was also undeniably the "year of WiFi". Our PC usage
patterns have been transformed: we carry them to meetings, use them at
hotels and on client sites and at home. Whereas most of us used
to do most of our work in our "office" or "cube", our most important
work is now done in our "virtual office" - the one that is implemented
in software on PC's and a variety of devices tucked away in our
backpack, briefcase, purse and pocket.
This isn't a small trend: its impact on business, society and our
lives is huge. I would strongly recommend that you spend some
quality time with this
presentation based on a landmark study done in 2003 on the
pervasiveness of off-site work.
I sit here writing this as we're about about to lift the
veil from what I believe you'll find truly
represents the next generation of communications software, Groove v3.0.Our primary design goal
for this product, based very specifically on how it has been being
used by our customers over the past three years, was to implement, for
its users, the essence of their "virtual office". Where we
do our work together, and where we want to do our
work together because of how it feels and just
works. We now live in an era of extreme mobility, where the attributes of secure
communications, coordination, and synchronization are core to most
everything we do in terms of information work. An era where our
tools and mobile devices must be specifically designed with advanced,
elegant awareness & notification to help us to
efficiently swarm around our joint activities, and to aggregate and
prioritize notifications in ways that help us to conserve our
attention and cope with information overload.
Think of how you yourself work, on a day-to-day basis. This
era is one of virtual work performed by a highly decentralized
workforce. Technology's role in this era is to bring us
effective horizontal fusion - reducing the cost of
coordination between us in a manner not possible
with centralized technologies. It should reflect
the changing nature of work, from the
physical workplace, toward the decentralized workspace<
/A>. And it most certainly will.

MarsEdit Future
MarsEdit Future
12/17/2004 06:34 PMNow that 1.0 is out, what’s next for
MarsEdit?
Below are some—but not nearly all—of the things planned
for the future.
Fixing that time bug!
The most commonly reported bug is actually a WordPress bug,
unfortunately. In some configurations, the time on the server for a
post sent from MarsEdit is incorrect: it doesn’t take into
account the time zone difference properly.
My hope is that this will be fixed in WordPress 1.3.
(By the way—there are many MarsEdit users who love WordPress. My
point isn’t to knock it: WordPress is quite cool.)
Blogger and titles
MarsEdit doesn’t yet support titles for Blogger.
It will—but it requires implementing the Atom weblog editing API
first. This is MarsEdit’s top priority.
WYSIWYG editing
Dave Hyatt has said publicly that WebCore will support HTML editing. We plan to use it to add WYSIWYG editing to
MarsEdit.
It will be a choice, of course—those of you who prefer plain
text won’t have to use the WYSIWYG editing feature.
More image features
People ask for thumbnails, drag-and-drop, resizing, iPhoto
integration, etc. etc. All excellent ideas.
Though MarsEdit’s main point is to be a literate weblog
editor—an editor for people who love writing—images are
very important.
Uploading enclosures
I’m not even sure yet if it’s technically possible, given
the current weblog editing APIs—but folks want to upload files
that get added as RSS enclosures (aka podcasts).
Cocoal.icio.us support
Should MarsEdit include del.icio.us
features, or should it work with Cocoal.icio.us?
On one hand, you have people who say, “I want each app to do one
thing and do it well.”
On the other hand, you have people who say, “I want an app that
puts it all together, the whole package.”
Is del.icio.us support part of that “one thing” that
weblog editors should do? Is it a necessary part of “the whole
package?”
I don’t know!
But, when in doubt, if there’s another app to work with, why not
support that other app instead of redoing the work? After all,
MarsEdit already works with a variety of newsreaders, browsers, and
text editors—why not work with Cocoal.icio.us too.
An opposite case could be made, surely, and it wouldn’t be
wrong—but my personal preference is to work with other apps as
much as possible.
The above list is not comprehensive—there’s plenty
more. MarsEdit is just getting started.
But the above covers the most common bugs and feature requests
we’ve been hearing.
The Look Of The Future Past
The Look Of The Future Past
02/11/2004 12:18 PMSure, it isn’t a peek at what has got to be the most intriguing
offering to come down the old Hasbro pike, but the image above does
shed a little light on the direction the toymakers are going with the
new
The Original Trilogy line. Coming from a very reliable
source, this logo is almost certainly the real deal (though it may
only be used for promotion), and with the truly vintage feel it has,
there is little doubt the figures that will come in this series will
be just as cool…

The Future Is Here... in Korea
09/07/2004 01:04 AMKTF to Pioneer Ubiquitous Orchestra With Mobile
Baton
"Today the number of mobile phone subscribers has surpassed 35
million, and accounts for 75 percent of the total population.
In particular, almost all people in their 20s and 30s own their
mobile phones and a mobile phone is the most wanted birthday present
among elementary school students.
Not too long ago a mobile phone symbolized wealth and power, now,
in such a short time it has become a necessity....
With such advanced mobile infrastructure in place, everyday life is
rapidly going mobile.
Sookmyoung Women¡¯s University in Seoul is the case in
point and currently attracting attention from all over the world.
Under an initiative to build a mobile campus with KTF, students now
use their mobile phones with built-in student ID card to enter a
library, borrow a book and inquire about personal records.
They installed an attendance check system at a large lecture hall
whereby students can simply touch their phone to the system to record
their attendance.
And hospitals are now getting in on this too. Samsung Medical
Center now uses PDAs to identify and check patient records including
the status of a patient, treatment records, prescription, test results
anytime and anywhere. Much more convenient and reliable than the
bulky, paper records of the past....
More interestingly, now mobile phones are used as means for
well-being by providing information such as blood sugar, diet and
meditation. A mobile phone even offers services like driving away
mosquitoes, a finger vibrator for hand acupuncture and music therapy,
a guard service by sounding a siren, a location tracking service and
product information in which a camera phone is used to read a
barcode." [The Korea

Sales of MP3 Mobile Phones to Break 5 Million at Home This
Year
"This year, LG Electronics introduced Korea's first MP3 mobile
phone, the LP3000, which has sold over 300,000 units, and the company
expects that the sale of their MP3 models will easily smash through 1
million units this year. An LG official noted that of the 20 new
models to be introduced in the domestic market by the end of this
year, 80~90 percent of them will be MP3 phones. He also said MP3
functions will become a basic function of mobile phones like camera
function.
Pantech & Curitel said it expects 1 million of its 3 million
units of supply to be MP3 phones. Most of its 15 new models will be
MP3 mobile phones. The company added, 'We plan to provide MP3 function
as a basic function.' It explained that therefore, the domestic MP3
market should greatly expand." [The Digital Chosunilbo
