Five Questions

Five Questions 03/31/2005 09:09 AM
BirdBandingI'll be out of town and offline for a couple of days, so I thought I'd take a day to think about where to go next with How to Save the World. Therefore please consider this as a kind of 'open thread' and tell me what you'd like to see here next. And to provoke your thinking here are four more questions to ponder:
  1. Without getting into the ethics of the case, and without blaming the media, please explain why so many people care so much about that one singular right-to-die case in Florida?
  2. What's a better name for 'the environment' that is less separate in connotation from human civilization?
  3. Why does it break our heart to throw out teddy bears and other stuffed animals, even if they're not childhood toys with memories attached to them?
  4. How could we effectively teach online the critical skills that take a lot of practice and one-on-one coaching? I'm referring to skills like effective listening, collaboration, and even meditation. It seems to me our inability to do this well is the greatest limitation today of the Internet as an agent of change.

RDF questions

RDF questions 10/28/2003 11:06 PM

Danny Ayers: Of course if Atom was expressed in an RDF-friendly syntax* then FOAF and every other RDF language could be used directly in Atom without having to jump through hoops.

Danny, a few questions.  For the basis of my questions, presume a comparison against RSS 1.0, which unquestionably is an RDF friendly vocabulary.

  • I embedded FOAF inside of my feed.  Wouldn't the syntax for embedding FOAF inside of dc:creator be pretty much the same?  In other words, wouldn't it be the same amount of "hoops", or lack thereof?
  • To me, the killer app of metadata is query.  If I were to switch from atom:name to foaf:name, people would have to update their XPath queries in order to access the data in its new place.  How would RQL handle this?  Wouldn't they also have to update their queries?
To me, this gets at the heart of the value proposition for RDF.  What I hear is that it essentially provides extensibility for free.  I'd just like to see this promise expressed in tangible terms.

Over at Loose Democracy, I've blogged about two questions I hope the Commission gets around to: Why did we help 140 Saudis leave the US in the first couple of days after 9/11? And why was Ashcroft warned not to fly commercial airlines 6 weeks before 9/11? I'm trying not to be paranoid......

yet more irrelevant questions

yet more irrelevant questions 09/10/2004 04:24 PM
So, shamefully, I've contributed to this irrelevant question blog ("Mr. President, how many times have you been arrested?"), but I can't begin to describe fully how depressing this presidential campaign has been. Why do we waste attention on these ridiculous questions? I'm sure Mr. Bush's record was nothing to be proud of -- his drinking problem is well documented, and these things go together. But I'm also sure he is no longer that man -- and for anyone who has seen someone overcome that demon, you know the courage this requires. So I really don't care how many times he was arrested, I don't care if he used power to escape his obligations in the Reserve -- whether he should be our President depends only upon whether the policies he will pursue are good for this nation. Likewise, re Mr. Kerry: I am sure he demonstrated unimaginable courage in volunteering to serve his country in an unpopular war, and then mustering the courage to articulate brilliantly the reasons why that war was wrong. But we're not electing a captain for a military unit -- if shots are fired, he will follow orders, not give them -- and while it would be great if he could find a way to articulate why this war was wrong, the presidency is not a reward for great Senate testimony. Whether he should be our President depends upon whether the policies he will pursue are good for the nation. So why can't we actually talk about the conflict in these policies? I'm confident about that choice, but I would love my view to be challenged by real arguments, and a focus on real issues. CBS almost seems proud of their idiotic story. Shame on CBS. Shame on us.

two questions for Mr. Nader

two questions for Mr. Nader 03/06/2004 01:51 AM
Ralph Nader has apparently decided to run for President. So says his website, votenader.org (which doesn't seem to render well on Mac browsers, but which my Dad reports renders quite well on a Windows machine. Don't look for Ralph's presidential campaign at Nader2004.org. That domain has been captured by a pro-Nader Nader-critic (which I count myself as), and is a graphic version of the argument I made earlier.) This is obviously depressing to folks like me who, while admirers of the good that Nader did in the world, and admirers of more of his policies than the other candidates in the race, believe the consequence of his being in this race will simple be to increase the probability that President Bush will have a second term. So two questions for Mr. Nader: (1) Do you agree that even if it would be best if you were President, it would be second best if a Democrat were President rather than President Bush? (2) If so, then will you promise that if 2000 repeats itself -- if it is clear that you are not going to be elected president, but probable that votes for you will deny the Democrat of the Presidency -- then you will ask your supporters to vote for someone else? Because if Mr. Nader can answer both questions "yes," then I'm all for his candidacy. His views, his integrity, and (except for one important gap) his judgment certainly deserve to stand on the stage with any Democrat, and with President Bush.

"Today I received my 100th question via AIM. Obviously I was a believer in the program to begin with, but I must say that it has exceeded my expectations....

For no cost not only have we become more available, but I've helped patrons that otherwise wouldn't have been helped. I've done more Young Adult Readers' Advisory in the past 2 months than I have in the previous 2 years. YAs have sent me messages asking about the library's hours, and prizes for summer reading program. I bet that these things aren't a big enough deal for them to make a telephone call, but shooting me a quick message is more convenient. Perhaps this is grandiose, but I can't help but thinking that I'm breathing some life into libraries for these kids." [walking paper]

So if Saddam and sons do go into self-imposed exile today or tomorrow, does that mean there won't be a war, and we'll just toss in a new leader in his place?

I assume we'll start bombing lots of suspected WMD facilities when the 48 hours are up. Since they're our best guesses where weapons previously not found may reside, we're going to be blowing up lots of stuff and making mistakes (they can't all be WMD facilities). Anyone see a problem with that?

How do know when it is over? When Saddam's body is found? When weapon storage areas are all blown up? What's the goal of this action and why isn't it clearly being communicated?

So our FAQ is out-of-date (no surprises there) and we'd like to make it up-to-date so that it is relevant and useful to people who use our licenses and tools, and people who use works licensed under one of the Creative Commons licenses. To make sure it is useful & relevant, we'd like feedback from those most concerned and most likely to use the FAQ. We have already had some suggestions over the years of things to include in the FAQ but are interested in knowing if anyone has any additional suggestions of things they'd like to see. Obviously, we won't be able to address every question and always need to be mindful of the fact that we cannot provide legal advice; but for those with suggestions - please send suggestions to our info email address.

NetNewsWire Questions Answered

NetNewsWire Questions Answered 09/22/2004 10:25 PM
As you might imagine, we’ve had a ton of email since releasing the NetNewsWire public beta yesterday. A few things have come up more than once, so I thought I’d answer them here.

What happened to the Mark All as Read toolbar button?

It’s still there—choose Customize Toolbar from the View menu to add it. (There are some other toolbar items might want to add, such as Post to Weblog and Mark as Flagged.)

The Find command doesn’t work!

Yes, it’s broken at the moment. It will get fixed before 2.0 ships.

What’s the best place to report a bug? How should I make feature requests?

The answer to both is the on-line bug tracker. You can report bugs and make feature requests from the same form. Choose Report a Bug from the Help menu.

How can I open browser tabs in the background?

Open NetNewsWire’s preferences, click on the Browsing icon, then un-check the box next to “Select new tabs as they are created.”

Is the pricing just a special sale?

It’s not a special sale. NetNewsWire 2.0 is $24.95 or $39.95 bundled with MarsEdit. Those are the regular prices.

How can I read restricted LiveJournal feeds?

Instructions are in the Help book—choose NetNewsWire Help from the Help menu then click on Questions & Answers. The question about LiveJournal is the top item.

Note: we realize that Help viewer used to be so painfully slow that we’ve all become unaccustomed to using it. But it’s pretty fast in 10.3, and NetNewsWire’s help actually has a bunch of info. Also see the Tips page in the Help book.

Is there an alternative to the Yahoo Groups mailing list?

Yes—we’re transitioning away from the Yahoo Groups mailing list to a new one (generously hosted by Aaron Swartz). List instructions are on the beta-download page.

Xanga, The Ghetto Botnet

Xanga, The Ghetto Botnet 12/30/2004 05:18 PM
Did you notice when Slashdot's search was down for the past few days? (It's back up now.) Turns out that in a stunning case of irony, it had been hammered into submission by thousands of people attempting to use it. However, unlike CmdrTaco's regimented DDoS attacks, this one is carried out with malicious intent as opposed to mere sociopathic inconsiderateness. It also highlights a potential threat from one of the biggest weblogging services out there.
