Microsoft Research Opens Its Doors

Microsoft Research Opens Its Doors 06/10/2004 09:54 AM
Finding the shortest distance between two points sounds easy enough, but computing that route takes too long and consumes too much computer memory. Researchers at Microsoft Corp. are tackling the problem so that, in the next few years, computers can map the fastest route as well as make fast adjustments for road work or traffic jams, said Michael Schroeder, assistant director of Microsoft Research's Silicon Valley lab here. It comes down to developing a better mapping algorithm, one efficient enough to do massive computations in the palm of someone's hand.

For the past few months, I've been a contributor to the Worthwhile Magazine blog where a bunch o' bloggers — including Tom Peters, Halley, David Batstone and the magazine's editors — talk about what makes working worthwhile. Interesting idea (all hail Halley): Do the blog before the magazine. Now the magazine itself is getting ready to launch in October, and for US$11 you can have a postal employee slap a copy down on your doorstep (or outside your carton depending on how the Bush economic recovery is working out for you) once a month for a year. There's a subscription...

Data Quality Act opens doors to

Data Quality Act opens doors to
psuedoscience DoS attacks
12/08/2003 01:07 PM
The Data Quality Act, which sets standards for the quality of data used in US law-making, has turned out to be a great tool for forcing pseudoscience (asbestos isn't that bad for you) into the lawmaking process -- a way to filibuster the scientists by requiring them to disprove whatever woo-woo notions you want to raise.
As the testimony of former Clinton administration Energy official and George Washington University epidemiologist David Michaels shows, the guidelines are very troubling. Michaels' complaint is that under the guise of "peer review," industry sponsored or funded attempts to undermine good science are going to get a big boost. That's for a number of reasons, one of them being the key question of who will be doing the peer reviewing.

The current guidelines say that as far as peer review goes, scientists who have worked for government have a conflict of interest and can't participate, but scientists who have worked for industry have carte blanche. As Michaels puts it, the suggestion "that academic scientists are more beholden to public funding agencies than corporate funders is on face ludicrous." And there's more. The peer review guidelines play into clever industry strategies for using the system of science to advance their economic interests.

Court Opens Garage Doors, But Sets Murky
Precedent
09/01/2004 04:06 AM
The Court of Appeals has upheld an earlier ruling saying that it's not a violation of the DMCA to create garage door openers that get around manufacturer controls designed to force buyers to go back to the original company for replacement openers. A lot of analysis is coming out on this one for a variety of reasons -- but, basically both the case and the decision are both incredibly complicated and incredibly important. The court basically wants to establish some sort of balancing "test" for the DMCA. However, the DMCA and certain decisions associated with it are fairly problematic to begin with, so the test is somewhat convoluted and not entirely reasonable. The good part is that the court seems to recognize just how troublesome the DMCA is as written. The problem is that they don't really know what to do about it to bring it back in line with where it should be to avoid its misuse for anti-competitive purposes. It sounds like a bit of cognitive dissonance as the court tried to resolve the realization that the law really was as bad as some made it out to be with the idea that Congress couldn't possibly have meant for it to be that bad.

Rave for the Deaf

Rave for the Deaf 04/14/2004 10:31 AM
BoingBoing reader Charles Vestal says:
A East London dance club held an all-deaf rave, featuring signing-karaoke, deaf rap, a standup comdian, and all the pumping basslines they could handle. Problem was, the lights were flashing so much, no one could chat with each other at the bar. Perhaps they should hook up with this guy to get a more moving experience.
