Looking out the back window, the entire block is surrounded by plain clothes policemen. My neighbour doesn't answer. This probably means that their son has beaten his girlfriend to a bloody pulp again.

NextFest snapshot gallery

NextFest snapshot gallery 05/18/2004 01:20 PM
Here are some snapshots I took at Wired Magazine's NextFest this weekend. At left, a young man named Cameron Clapp who became a triple amputee at age 15 in a train accident. He now uses "smart" prosthetic limbs that have to be charged up at night like a cell phone. The computer-aided devices give him greater mobility and independence than conventional prosthetics -- he's a champion amputee athlete.

Other memorable moments -- Wired editor-in-chief Chris Anderson asks NASA Space Architect Gary Martin about the search for life "out there;" Martin says, "It would be even more frightening if we never find life out there -- it would mean that we are entirely alone, in a very big universe."

Pixar pulled aside the curtain and gave us a glimpse into the creative process behind Toy Story and other blockbuster CGI features. Wired entertainment editor Jennifer Hillner hosted exclusive previews of mindblowingly cool footage from the forthcoming Fox/Blue Sky Studios animated feature Robots (due out Spring 2005), and from the CGI/bluescreen project Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (opening this September). Sunday ended in an incredible roundtable discussion with space entrepreneurs including ID/Quake/Doom software wizard John Carmack; Space Adventures CEO Eric Anderson, Xcor CEO Jeff Greason, and Xprize founder Peter Diamandis. News there included never-before-seen footage of Burt Rutan's SpaceShipOne, and of a new R+D effort from Carmack.

Snapshot disk image works

Snapshot disk image works 09/23/2004 09:39 PM
I'd recommended looking at a small disk imager called Snapshot I'd found on tinyapps.org. I'd given it a little look-see. But now I've put it to the test: I did a full image of my laptop's hard drive, reformatted, and restored it. Yup, the compact little bugger works. It did take a little coaching from the creator who responded to my plaintive email ridiculously quickly and helpfully. I had to restore in DOS mode, and my laptop wouldn't recognize the USB hard drive that contained the image. Tom recommended NTFSDOS, a freeware program that gives drive letters to your mass...

A snapshot of Java spec request advances

A snapshot of Java spec request advances 11/13/2003 10:06 AM
It's official: Java 2 Enterprise Edition Version 1.4 is now the new Java standard, as the result of a final ballot published yesterday by the Java Community Process. This has been in the works for two years and is no surprise to most Java developers -- and Java developers who also work in open source projects. However, it is an official milestone, and milestones are important in the overall scheme of things. Since this brings focus to the JCP, we thought we'd offer a snapshot of the various Java Specification Requests as they now appear, in all their various states.

Mastering phpMyAdmin

Mastering phpMyAdmin 06/03/2004 07:01 AM

phpMyAdmin is usually installed quickly, out of acute necessity. You need to do something with your database, and you can't do it via telnet or SSH or anything else, so you download the latest version, FTP it up, and away you go. More often than not, the install is forgotten about as soon as your need is over.

The downside of this is that you're not getting nearly the value you should out of a phpMyAdmin install. Most people work with phpMyAdmin superficially and in very narrow usage corridors — like kids walking barefoot on a painted line through a very large parking lot. There's so much about the app that you don't know.

Enter this book: "Mastering phpMyAdmin for Effective MySQL Management." This is the first book I know of solely on phpMyAdmin (though a lot of MySQL books cover it briefly in an appendix or something). It was released by Packt Publishing a few weeks ago.

It's a departure from a lot of tech books in that (1) it's short and sweet (just under 200 pages — not nearly the 600-page monolith some of these things become), and (2) it seems more...conversational. Concepts are explained in plain English. I normally hate that cliche, but it fits here. I got a sense of simply having a casual conversation with a fellow geek.

I read it over the course of a week, putting in a chapter or two each night. I learned something new in every chapter, and I'd implement them in my phpMyAdmin install right after reading the chapter. By the end of the book, I'm left with a superb phpMyAdmin install that does a thousand times more than I've ever accomplished with the app before.

There's a lot of phpMyAdmin functionality under the hood that you've likely never seen. For instance, you can set it up to enforce relational integrity in your database. This is just good database design, but it also enriches the interface considerably. Foreign key fields now become drop-down lists to the foreign table with a selection of entries. You can print a PDF summary document with descriptions of all tables and columns and an entity relationship diagram showing field relationships. Bet you haven't seen that trick before.

I suddenly have a sense of liberation with phpMyAdmin. We all hate writing admin interfaces, especially for one-off apps we do in a hurry. Thankfully, phpMyAdmin can support an enormous amount of administration chores in an interface not nearly as utilitarian as the default one you get on install. It won't work for administering the data of every app you right, but I bet it will handle a lot of them.

I can now see writing apps and doing things that I stayed away from before just because I didn't want to write all the data entry and database admin scripts that easily dominate the work required to put these things together. Instead, I can concentrate on the fun of the front-end pages, while phpMyAdmin sucks up all the back-end work.

The book also includes some good information about PHP and MySQL in general. On page 86, in the chapter on importing data, there's a solid little discussion about PHP file upload and execution limits that trumps anything I've read before. I'm a better developer for having read these four paragraphs about the "upload_max_filesize," "memory_limit," and "post_max_filesize" parameters.

As for MySQL, did you know about InnoDB tables? This is a table format that builds referential integrity into MySQL — something the database has been missing for so long. I'll admit to being utterly ignorant about this feature until this point.

There's a chapter at the end of the book about MIME-based transformations that summarizes the general level of apathy about this app. I can't believe I haven't run across a discussion about this feature before —

You may have known on the periphery that you could store files directly into a MySQL database using a BLOB column. But did you know that phpMyAdmin will support this with a file upload field in the interface, so your users can upload files directly? Or that you can sent a MIME Transformation on that field to display a thumbnailed view of stored images in the row when browsing the database? And that you can link that thumbnail to the full-size version or the image, pulled directly from the field? I'll bet the percentage of phpMyAdmin users who know that trick is in the single digits.

So, good book. If you find yourself writing a lot of throwaway admin interfaces and hating every minute of it, the $30 cover price for this text is probably looking mighty attractive right now.

Mastering phpMyAdmin approaches the usage of the popular PHP-based database administration application, phpMyAdmin. It is targeted at "the serious phpMyAdmin user who would like to use this outstanding application to its full power." It is a compliment to the authors of this hugely popular application to say that there is not much for this book to cover, as the interface of phpMyAdmin is famous for its ease of use. Read Mitch Pirtle's review of "Mastering phpMyAdmin for Effective MySQL Management" here - complete with a chapter overview, the style points, and the interesting lowdown.

Comments Period Drawing to a close for
Draft License Version 2.5

Comments Period Drawing to a close for
Draft License Version 2.5
06/05/2005 11:40 PM

The comments period announced here for the minor tweak to the attribution language across all of our core licenses proposed for version 2.5 is drawing to a close. As befits a minor tweak, there has not been a tremendous amount of criticism or issues raised with the revised suggested language. Some important comments, however, raised some complex issues and require some discussion.

Firstly, concern was expressed that the attribution language would interfere with copyright notices; that because the attribution could now be, not to the author, but to a wiki or a university or funding entity, that this would cause a removal of copyright notices. This tweaked attribution language, however, does not to impact a copyright notice. The tweaked attribution language does not require attribution to follow copyright ownership or copyright notices. Who owns copyright in a work is a separate matter (a behind-the-scenes matter, if you like) between the parties involved in the process of creating the work. So, for example, an author may own copyright in an article they prepare but the agreement between the author and the institute that funded the work requires some form of attribution that acknowledges that the work was produced with funds from the institute. Similarly, an author may wish to be credited as the author of the work for reputational purposes but their university actually owns the copyright to their work, pursuant to their employment agreement. In the case of wikis, attribution can be to the wiki but each author may still own copyright to their contribution to the wiki (unless there is a separate agreement transferring ownership to the wiki). Finally, journals, particularly open access journals, may wish to be acknowledged as the source of first publication of the work even though they publish the article under only an exclusive or non-exclusive license (and do not take an assignment of title). It should also be noted that the status of copyright notices and the issue of correctly identifying the copyright owner(s) of a work are no more complex under the tweaked attribution language than under the existing attribution language. Under the existing attribution language, credit had to be given to the author; however, as noted above, due to employment relationships or other contractual relationships, the author may have transfered title to the work to some other party and retained only the right of accreditation.

Secondly, there was concern that the tweaked attribution language was somehow proscriptive - that it now dictated to wikis how they had to structure attribution. This is not the case. The tweaked attribution language contains "and/or" language - thus, it allows a variety of different attribution posssibilities - to the author, to a wiki, to an author and a publisher, to an author and a wiki - as many parties as the author or licensor see fit.

This minor tweak is important to enable flexibility in attribution and thereby facilitate a larger number of adopters, including those who have more complex requirements regarding attribution - such as wikis and academic journals. Consequently, Creative Commons is working to give effect this change as soon as possible. If anyone has any additional concerns, please feel free to contribute them to the discussion taking place here. We are looking to close the comments period on Tuesday May 31, 2005.
