AP - It was one of the first signs that the intelligence used to go to war in Iraq was wrong: White House repudiation of 16 words in last year's State of the Union speech that had suggested Saddam Hussein tried to buy uranium in Africa. Yet even as two recent reports sharply criticized prewar intelligence, they also suggested President Bush's claim may not have been totally off-base.

RSS Advisory Board, not on

RSS Advisory Board, not on 05/19/2004 07:20 PM
It was mentioned on Scripting News a few days ago that I’m no longer on the RSS Advisory Board. This warrants some explanation.

I originally joined the RSS Advisory Board for two reasons:

1. I thought that moving and re-licensing the spec was an ethical move that I wanted to support.

2. I thought that it would lead to some peace in the standards wars. Not that it would lead to convergence or one format winning, just peace.

I continue to believe that it was a good thing to move the spec to Harvard and use a Creative Commons license. However, I was guilty of wishful thinking on the second point.

Worse for me is that some people thought that I used my software as advocacy. Some thought I was an anti-Atom partisan, and others thought I was an anti-RSS traitor. Both notions are false. My job is to support both formats, as peers, in my software, without favoritism. And if another format gains popularity, I’ll support that one too. I care about my software and NetNewsWire users a million times more than I care about any one format.

The situation of supporting multiple syndication formats is not new with Atom: Atom is the third major format. The other two are RSS 1.0 and RSS 0.9x/2.0. (I’m speaking in broad terms: I’m well aware of the differences between various versions of RSS.) My point is just that newsreaders have been dealing with multiple formats for a long time.

I wish the new RSS Advisory Board all the best, and I wish all the folks working on Atom all the best.

Dave Winer leaving RSS advisory board!

Dave Winer leaving RSS advisory board! 06/26/2004 06:21 AM

I am but a geek who's web surfing now revolves around RSS. I have only been producing this site a couple of years using RSS technology and it has profoundly changed me.

First I have influenced a person I have worked with for years to invest a significant amount of time/money integrating RSS into a mainstream application that has been on the market for a long time. My vision will have a significant impact on his company. When your influence and indirectly driven by Dave's perseverance to develop RSS into a mainstream standard helps change a companies vision that is a powerful thing. (more on that later but for know you will have to ponder what we are up to).

Second I started this website because RSS agreation of data, made me envision something that we have not yet fully implemented. It will be accomplished with RSS,

Look at the number of cottage industries that have sprung up and revolve around RSS. Not very many people can say my vision resulted in the creation of multiple companies doing breakthrough work, Dave Winer can! He is on a very short list of techies that can make such a claim.

Dave Winer was instrumental in making RSS what is today. The Atom folks would not be doing what they are doing if Dave had not done the legwork and revived RSS from the death grip surrounding the demise of Netscape and they should not forget who forged the path.

RSS has given me hope that innovation is still alive and well, it is now being driven mainstream through the voices of 100's of thousands of webloggers and companies are incorporating the technology every day fearing they are going to be left behind. It's like a tidal wave it starts as a ripple and ends with overwhelming power.

I am confident though, that with Dave's leaving the RSS advisory board that he has left it in good hands and the vision will carry on. Will there be changes sure but I also foresee universal incorporation at all levels of the IT infrastructure and into personal media.

Thanks Dave I only wish I had been there from the beginning. [Scriptin g News]
