ville Herald Interview with Don Hopkins.
Interview with Don Hopkins
In this interview, Don Hopkins describes his early days on the Sims
development team with Will Wright (back when the project was called
Dollhouse) and the difficulties the team had fighting EA's attempts to
terminate the project, and then preventing EA from gutting it of
interesting content (like architecture tools). Even now, he claims
that EA fails to respect Will Wright and his vision by not developing
custom content for TSO, and that it has shown no interest in a tool
that he (Hopkins) created that would allow users to safely create
custom objects that won't crash the game.
Overview of the Interview -- some headline quotes:
"I recall that one of our most difficult accomplishments was
convincing EA not to cancel the project, because some of the EA old
guard didnt trust nor respect Wills vision, didnt
get the idea of Dollhouse, didnt think it would
sell, wanted to inject it full of their old tried and trusted formula,
and wanted to gut out the most interesting parts of the game (like the
architecture tools). I think its a lucky fluke that The Sims
ever shipped, and I hope EA has learned enough from their experience
to trust the projects that Will is directly involved in, listen to
what hes been saying eloquently and consistently for years, and
let something like The Sims happen again."
" I dont think the lack of user created content is the only
reason The Sims Online is a failure, but I think its an
extremely important one that EA went out on a limb and promised, but
never executed on. EA still hasnt officially announced that
theyre not going to let Maxis support user created content, but
as far as I have been able to tell, theyve whitewashed the
original discussion groups where they made and discussed the promise.
I realize that there are some difficult technical issues that have to
be solved, in order to support user created content in an online game
like The Sims Online. Thats why I wrote this proposal for
SafeTMog, a tool that would enable users to safely create objects for
The Sims Online that could not possibly crash the game: http://www.donhop
kins.com/2004/02/05.html#a72"
"Unfortunately
EA was not apparently interested in SafeTMog, which leads me to
believe that theyre not interested in ever supporting user
created content in The Sims Online. I dont know why Maxis never
executed on the plan they promised, but I do believe they disregarded
and didnt respect Will Wrights opinion in this matter,
which he clearly articulated. I dont think the problem was a
lack of resources just the opposite. So much conservative money
was bet on the project that it wasnt allowed to innovate. I
dont believe it was ineptitude at the engineering or design
level, but more likely at the executive management, resource
allocation and marketing level. My impression is that some of the
people in charge didnt believe in Wills vision,
didnt trust him, didnt listen to him, didnt do what
hes been saying for years, all along. I wish EA would have taken
some of the millions of dollars they made from The Sims 1, and
invested it back in fully developing The Sims Online, instead of
sucking it out of Maxis to support the rest of EA."

view with Don Hopkins in the Alphaville
Herald.

02/14/2004 11:51 PMInterview - James Atkinson ,
Founder of phpBB: An interesting interview with the guy who
started the phpBB project. It's a
good look into how a successful open-source project is run.
The biggest thing is to listen to your users. They drive
your product forward and they help you support it. Secondly, you have
to stick to your ideals. One of the reasons that phpBB is as
successful as it is, compared to other "free" forum scripts, is
because our project is very stable. We've never changed our name,
we've never changed our leadership, and we've never changed our
license. We've stuck to the ideals on which we originally founded
phpBB, and this approach has given our community the perception that
phpBB is strong and stable.

"I don't embrace any belief
systems. I'm a fuzzy believer. I might say that I 95% believe that
humans will achieve a lifespan beyond the current biological limits; I
50% believe that this will work out well on a social-political level;
I 95% believe that we will get really precise control over our minds
and moods; I 60% believe that the future of most of humanity is pretty
well fucked; I 10% believe that something very much like the
singularity will actually occur; I 1% believe that it will happen in
my lifetime."
He also talks a bit about his new book, "
Counterculture Through the Ages," due out in
November. Friends who have read it tell me that it's a brilliant, even
scholarly, work. RU's star is absolutely rising again.

06/29/2004 12:16 PM
Sony's new DCR-PC350 MiniDV
Handycam jams a 3.31-megapixel CCD into a compact shell that weighs
less than a pound. Each unit comes with a Handycam Station, a charging
dock that connects to a TV or PC via S-Video, USB, or FireWire
(i.LINK), to copy over data or display images or video straight from
the camera. A 2.5-inch touchscreen LCD augments the rest of the
controls, and a Memory Stick PRO Duo slot allows for a quick toss-in
of additional storage (just for photos, not video, I would think).
Small, light, and high-quality -- no complaints here (although I
wouldn't mind a hard drive inside, too, if I'm free to wish).
Should be available in September for $1,300, "just in time for the
holidays." I had no idea Sony was so concerned about Rosh Hashanah.

Sony DCR-PC350 Camcorder Reviewed
07/09/2004 01:27 PM
CamCorderInfo has the first review I've seen of the
Sony DCR-PC350, the new pocket-sized camcorder with the 3.31-megapixel
sensor. Sadly, although it's a pretty decent review in general, they
don't talk too much about the still image quality, something I'm sure
many of us would like to know more about, since one of the major
selling points of the DCR-PC350 is its function as a convergence
device. Still, there is some good information in there, including talk
of a "Cinematic Effect" setting that shoots video progressively,
tweaks the color, and drops every fifth frame in an effort to emulate
the look of film. And it works, sort of, at least as an interesting
effect (although they say it ends up looking more like 8mm film than
fancy, Hollywood-quality stuff.)

Sony DCR-HC40 MiniDV Camcorder Review
06/21/2004 10:31 AM
PC Mag reviews the Sony
DCR-HC40 MiniDV camcorder, and despite some issues with the
touch-screen controls, find the most important stuff -- image quality,
battery life, and price -- to be very strong for a $700 camera. It has
"intelligent accessory shoes" that can power an optional light or
microphone, and it happens to have an internal lens cover, something I
find highly appealing in the smaller throw-and-go camera segment.
Still image cameras almost all have internal lens covers these days; I
don't know why we expect anything different from camcorders.

09/08/2004 07:22 AM
Despite the ever-present push towards "smaller,"
there's nothing small about Sony's new "DCR-DVD301" DVD Handycam's
screen. At first glance, it appears to be a standard DVD Handycam -
same 1.4GB 8cm DVD writing, and more or less the same specifications -
but when you look twice, you realize this new unit is equipped with a
3.5" LCD. Indeed, Sony has added a full inch in at least one area,
which is more than anyone can ask, really.
"With great LCD screens comes great price," my uncle once said, and
apparently he was right on target: you'll pay nearly $1,100 for this
camera, presuming it gets released in America for a similar price as
the Japanese market.

There's not much to go on at

images of the upcoming Sony Ericsson refresh, the P910. After all the
hub bub surrounding the original leaked 'Layla' information, I don't
think it's going out on a limb too much to say that these are probably
legit -- or the work of a very talented hoaxer. With Sony pulling out
of the PDA market (everywhere but Japan), it's reasonable to expect
them to start pushing cellular handset upgrades through faster and
faster. Of course, that would imply that one organization inside of
Sony knows what the other is doing, which is sort of ridiculous,
right? Tons more images on Mobile9, if you need more convincing.

I should warn you: I'm sort of
lukewarm on portable video players altogether. I don't commute to
work, and when I did, there was enough jostling and train swapping to
make anything that required focused attention, like reading books or
watching video, a fractured and annoying experience. But still, there
is an opportunity for a video player like the HMP-A1 to be useful -- I
just don't think this would be the one I would buy.

the company said in an announcement Tuesday. While the camcorder is
compatible with Japan's HDV high-definition digital video format,
users cannot store video on Sony's Blu-ray Disc format. The HDR-FX1
camcorder is Sony's first step in promoting high definition video as
the standard format for home-use camcorders, but its price makes it
too expensive for most families initially, the company said.

The first thing that comes to mind when seeing
Sony's DCR-DVD7E is that it looks rather like a Discman, but this is
of course only because it must make room for a DVD-R, DVD-RW, or

looking a bit unimpressive, the lens does a respectable 10x optical
zoom. No idea what it's going to cost when it hits European shelves in
May.

New Sony Cybershots, HP Photosmarts,
Including Sony T3 (Rawr!)
08/30/2004 09:56 AM
Gott im Himmel, ze cameras! There have been like
two dozen new cameras announced in the last few weeks as various
manufacturers start ramping up for Christmas, and Sony and HP are no
exception. Among the new Sonys announced today are two pocket-sized
beauties that I want right now: the T3, an update to the T1 and
Japan-only T11, a 5.1-megapixel camera that is Sony's thinnest at less
than three-quarters of an inch; and the DSC-L1, a candy bar
4.1-megapixel unit that is only 3.75-inches long. Just when I was
ready to buy a new camera Sony has to muck it all up with at least two
that really do it for me. Oh, and there's also the new DSC-V3, a
7-megapixel unit that looks mighty fine, as well.
The HPs, well, they are okay, but I'll be honest, they don't get me
all riled up as much as the two featherweight cameras from Sony do. If
they fixed the middling image quality of the T1 in the T3, that may be
my next sidearm. Living Room has a bunch of the press releases, and
I'll add to this post if any more info comes through during the
day.
