Ohio Man Pleads Guild To Copying Acxiom
DB
12/24/2003 07:08 PM

LittleW0lf writes "Security Focus's Kevin Poulsen submitted a story last Friday about a Cincinnati "Hacker" named Ephitah who managed to clone the consumer databases of Acxiom. Turns out the gentleman was working as a contractor for Acxiom, and found the passwd file for the ftp server, which gave him access to the password protected databases, (which may or may not contain consumer's Social Security numbers, dates of birth, gender, income, occupation, number of children, years at residence, adults in household, and vehicle information for millions of consumers.) The company is dismissing the seriousness of the matter and the sensitivity of the information in the database. They also do not plan on telling any of the consumers affected what was taken as they do not feel it met the threshold of sensitivity necessary to comply with federal disclosure laws."

Aussie actors' guild forbids members to
use Creative Commons
03/14/2005 05:29 PM
Cory Doctorow: Brian sez, "The Australian equivalent of the Screen Actors Guild has apparently refused to allow its members to participate in a film project--because the project would be licensed under a Creative Commons license:"
The MEAA Board decided that it could grant none of the dispensations sought by MOD Films, on the grounds that these would be “inappropriate”. The production had asked for dispensations and support for its world-first plans to employ professional actors in a film with only “Some Rights Reserved” by the production company. The company intends to permit non-commercial use and re-voicing of the film by the audience. The MEAA also rejected the option of any further negotiations with MOD Films.

MOD Films had sought a dispensation, since early January, to allow professional Australian actors to participate in the short (15 minute) film and had worked with actors agents to communicate the extent of the project before auditions. The cast chosen for Sanctuary had been offered 110% on top of the MEAA award rate to take part in the experiment.

MOD Films is using the Creative Commons licensing scheme that expressly permits more audience freedom than All Rights Reserved. The Creative Commons was first devised in 2002 and Australian-specific licenses were released in February. Mash-up and re-mix potential is an intrinsic part of the Sanctuary project – empowering the audience to exercise greater control over purchased film content and treating re-use as an opportunity as opposed to a threat. Audience re-use is already prevalent in the computer games industry, often referred to as MOD'ing, and certain bestselling games have started out as MODs (e.g. Counter Strike). MOD Films is exploring how this may work creatively and commercially with films.

Acxiom Database Hacked Again... And
Again... And Again...

Acxiom is one of the nation's largest providers of direct marketing (spam) lists, and the company can't seem to keep its databases safe from hackers. Late last year a man was caught copying one of their databases. Now, in what appears to be a much bigger case, authorities have hacking into the database repeatedly over a year and a half to retrieve names and personal info which he then sold for thousands of dollars to spammers. "Information accessed included names, addresses, e-mail addresses, customer demographics, and probably some birth dates and Social Security numbers." They discovered the breach soon after the first case, when they decided (what an idea) that it might make sense to actually check to make sure their databases were secure. And, of course, for those who are already in an Acxiom database and worried about the implications and would like out of their database, remember that they make it as difficult as possible to "opt out."

IBM to launch Microsoft bypass 05/09/2004 10:39 PM
International Business Machines has raised the stakes in its battle with Microsoft by developing a software technology that would allow large corporations to bypass Microsoft operating systems and applications on PCs or handheld computers. This is the latest of increasingly aggressive moves by IBM, the world's largest computer company, to grab market share as global information technology markets strengthen following three years of downturn. It comes as Microsoft is under pressure from corporate customers unhappy with security issues in its software and the cost of licences.
