Faith-Based National Parks

Faith-Based National Parks

Faith-Based National Parks 12/24/2003 07:07 PM

Faith-Based National Parks? The National Park Service has recently approved the display of three bronze plaques bearing biblical verses at the Grand Canyon, as well as the sale of a creationist book on the canyon's origins (here's a review of the book by a professor of geology,) while at the same time blocking park rangers from publishing a scientific rebuttal to creationism. The NPS also wants to remove images of gay rights, pro-choice and anti-Vietnam War demonstrations from a videotape shown at the Lincoln Memorial, though they may be relenting.

Feature Creep: e-Voting, Taking the
Faith-Based Initiative

Feature Creep: e-Voting, Taking the
Faith-Based Initiative
08/04/2004 07:05 PM

This week columnist Sanford May cracks open that hoary chestnut e-voting and wonders if it may be time to stop worrying and start loving the bomb. The bomb of self-rule, I'm saying.

Dare to dream of soon casting your vote in local and national elections via laptop or mobile phone, you'll run headlong into the great black wall of security issues. Indeed, security experts are lined up against e-voting, and they often present well-reasoned arguments. Yet as the Internet and devices that use it rapidly subsume other means of communication, the yen for perfect security in the digital realm is becoming outmoded. Each major step in the evolution of democracy has involved risks, obvious flaws, hidden traps, and, most importantly, the will of the people to solve the problems in the best way possible. The only sure route to the success of a democratic society is faith in the system. E-voting has the potential to greatly enhance democracy, in voter representation and a more direct process. At some point we must trust ourselves -- our talents and innovative spirit -- to create the future of self-rule.

Helsinki Dog Parks

Helsinki Dog Parks 01/02/2004 06:16 PM

Ever notice how large dogs
always have fluffy names and poodles are named Killer

Dog park activists in the US would salivate over the number of dog parks in Helsinki. When I was looking for papers on the import of HB last December, I saw a list of parks, but with little other information about them, at least not in English. It has been a long year and I've had to figure out much on my own. In August, I decided that as a project I would go around to all the dog parks in downtown, photograph and take notes on them, and put the information together in a sort of dog park guide. I also had Jarkko do the rough translation of the dog owner guide Helsinki has available but not in English. I scanned the illustrated pages in and polished the English up a bit. The guide is small, but contains a bit of useful information for dog owners.

Both of these are available in .pdf format and, if you live in Helsinki or are planning on moving here with a dog, I'd really like feedback as well as any other information you might like to see added. The dog park guide is still being fussed over so comments are very welcome. The email address is in the document. I also put some of the unused pictures up in a photo gallery which some may enjoy.

Disney parks are no-fly zones

Disney parks are no-fly zones 03/19/2003 10:45 PM
The new Orange Alert aviation regs have created a no-fly-zone around Disneyland and Walt Disney World.
The new regulations in effect create a no-fly zone around Disney World in Orlando, Florida and Disneyland in Anaheim, California. Unless pilots are granted specific exemptions from air traffic controllers, no flights are allowed within a 3-mile radius around the parks or below 3,000 feet.

Government officials said the Disney restrictions are not based on any specific or new information, but rather stem from a general concern about those two locations as possible terror targets.

Counterterrorism officials said the Disney parks have come up in interviews with al Qaeda operatives. Pictures and information about the parks have been found during some terror sweeps overseas, they say...

Disney spokeswoman Leslie Goodman said the latest airspace restriction is nothing new and expressed concern the latest restriction is unnecessarily worrying visitors. She complained Disney's phones have been ringing off the hook with anxious vacationers calling.

So there's a real possible upside to all the terrornoia: I might get shorter lines when I visit Disneyland next. Lin k Discuss

Urban parks come to life (USATODAY.com) 08/06/2004 05:53 AM
USATODAY.com - To a casual observer, the 4-acre tract of grass, kudzu, live oaks and mulberry trees is merely a patch of green in a city without very many. But to residents of Cabbagetown, a century-old neighborhood being reshaped by gentrification, the site represents a hard-won dream: a new neighborhood park.

Disney bans Segways in the parks

Disney bans Segways in the parks 02/10/2004 02:50 AM
Disabled Segway users are outraged at Disney's decision to ban Segways from the theme parks.
Disney World doesn't allow visitors, even those with disabilities like Exum, to use the self-balancing transportation machines in the parks. The policy angered some Segway owners with disabilities and surprised others since the Disney parks have a reputation for accommodating the disabled.

They said even some Disney employees use Segways, which are becoming increasingly popular with people who otherwise would have to use wheelchairs.

"I'm not prepared to let a corporate attorney dictate to me how I should be mobile," said Exum, who is technically quadriplegic from an injury as a teenager but functions as a paraplegic.

Disney parks gossip columnist

Disney parks gossip columnist 07/27/2004 02:58 PM
An anonymous reader writes, "MiceAge.com is sort of a gossipy (and many times quite bitchy) site devoted to all the latest going-ons at the happiest place on earth. Diehard fans of the place either loathe Al Lutz's almost weekly tidbits about operating problems and weak attendance at the new companion California Adventure park or love the many photos and the latest plans to update or replace attractions. This week Al posted about a recent visit by Michael Eisner to try and chat up the cast members, only to end up proving how out of touch he is with what is going on. Last week Sue Kruse in a very funny piece detailed just what was involved as far as the public goes with a staged 50th anniversary event. In an internet ocean of fawning Disney sites, MiceAge stands out if only for trying to just try and tell it like it is."
When Eisner did show up at that particular cafeteria in a pitiful attempt to rub elbows with the masses, he only really succeeded in proving how out-of-touch he is and how little about the Parks he actually knows. As the cafeteria took notice of Eisner's arrival, which was hard to miss due to the big entourage accompanying him, Eisner put forth his best political skills and tried to make friends. He marched right up to two college aged guys wearing Adventureland costumes waiting for their cheeseburgers and said "Hi fellas, where do you guys work?" The two Cast Members dutifully replied "We work at the Jungle Cruise, sir." Eisner broke into a broad and forced smile and said "Hey, that must be a lot of fun! I'd love to be able to drive that boat around all day, making those jokes and shooting at the hippo's like you do!" And without missing a beat, one of the Jungle Cruise Skippers said "We don't get to shoot at the hippo's anymore sir. They took the guns away three years ago." Eisner could only stammer, "Oh, they did? I didn't know that..." before he moved on down the line for the next forced smile and handshake. (By the way, the plan is still on to reverse Paul Pressler's silly and overly PC decision and bring back the guns to Jungle Cruise that we'd told you about in a previous update.)
