stopping discrimination, part
5,394--Money Talks
12/24/2003 04:53 PM

"It's good policy and good business." NYC's Employees Retirement System (5 funds managing $78.6 billion in holdings) is targeting Fortune 500 companies to adopt policies that specifically bar discrimination based on sexual orientation. One of them, CSX Corp., didn't even wait for their shareholder meeting, but immediately amended their policy in response. These funds recently had great success after a decade-long battle with Cracker Barrel Restaurants--infamous for firing gay and lesbian employees because they don't 窶彭emonstrate normal heterosexual values." Here's wishing an especially happy holiday to employees of those companies that have stopped discriminating and hopes for many more to join in. More info on this "shareholder activism" at The Equality Project.

I doubt this is all that surprising, but a new report suggests that anti-spam companies will bring in noticeably more revenue than the spammers themselves. Of course, creating anti-spam products actually takes some work, whereas spam is the job of lazy people who have no longterm vision, but just want money as quickly and as easily as possible. Still, when you look at the amount of money spent on both sides, it's fairly stunning just how much money moves due to spam.

How to make money from Digital Lifestyle
Aggregators - Part I
06/01/2004 05:07 PM

I'm getting to be like Doc now.  I have multiple blog sources where I'm published at.

I've been starting to use Tony Perkin's AlwaysOn Network as a platform to spiel on about DLAs.  Strictly DLAs.

A man's gotta have a professional avenue only to rant and rave in and the AlwaysOn Network is the perfect 24/7/365 venue for me - culminating with a meatspace confab in July.

I helped Tony put together the AO Zaibatsu (as he calls it) and I'm hoping that he'll continue to the good work in providing yet another example of social networking put into context - this time in the virtual Silicon Valley crowd.

The AO Zaibatsu provides every member a blog tool, which is then used to produce the global AlwaysOn Network voice.

Tony and his editorial staff (including Rafe Needleman and Rich Seidner) then cherry pick the posts and put them up onto the top page.  Tony and his team have some coolio new applications for Groups and sponsorships - which they'll be unveiling soon and it all ties into the AO Innovation Summit at Stanford in July 13-15th.

The whole brand is a great example of putting DLAs into action, and allows me (combined with 1UP.com) to show the world that "there's a there there".

So check out my latest post there entitled "H ow to make money from digital lfiestyle aggregators?"  'Cause it's all about making money - right?

I grabbed a couple of screen grabs just to show everyone that this is coming out of live code, with live, breathing humans attached to a real life social network - supporting FOAF and RSS - spewing out feeds and content faster than a NYC editor can edit them.

That means that the AlwaysOn Network is a permanent location in our people's mesh - a decentralized collection of on-line tools, services and applications - all utilizing FOAF to import/export digital ID's between systems.

We're working on forming an industry consortium dedicated to making sure that this happens.  It's code-named the FOAFnet.

Jeremiah writes "Amidst the public ballyhoo about how rampant P2P piracy is costing the music business its very life (gasp! NO!), BMI announced it collected a record level of revenue and royalty payout to its artist members. From their press release: "BMI has reported revenues of $673 million for the 2004 fiscal year, an increase of nearly $43 million, 6.8% over the prior year. Royalties of more than $573 million were distributed to our songwriters, composers and music publishers, an increase of $40 million or 7.5% from the previous year, and the most ever paid by an American PRO." Another interesting tidbit: "During the period 1995-2004, BMI had an average annual revenue growth rate of 9%..." If I read this right, BMI has been reporting solid growth over the last nine years, which makes me question the industry's claims about P2P. Either P2P ate into their growth (not mentioned), they found a way to cope with it (plausible), or it may actually help music sales. Whatever. Reminds me a bit of a spec I did for a life-insurance company's radio ad: Money , Money, Money (mp3 file)."

Stopping Spam Patented (Again)

Stopping Spam Patented (Again) 06/02/2004 10:10 AM
Earlier this year, we noted that Postini had receive d a patent for the incredibly obvious concept of anti-spam filtering. Well, it looks like they may be in for some competition, because Network Associates/McAfee has now been awarded a patent for an idea that (sarcasm alert) no one could have possibly come up with prior to December 2002 when they applied for it: us ing a combination of methods such as "filters, paragraph hashing, and Bayes rules" to stop spam. What this really means is that there are now going to be anti-spam patent battles which will slow down the process of stopping spam, and do no one any good, other than a few lawyers who will get rich. Why can't these companies just compete in the marketplace? Still, it would be great if, at some point, AT&T finally made it clear why they patented spamming itself last year.

Stopping Computer Viruses Before They

Stopping Computer Viruses Before They
Reach You
11/12/2003 01:33 PM
Roland Piquepaille writes "The Washington University in St. Louis (WUSL) announced that one of its computer science teams has developed a new technology to stop computer viruses and worms before they reach your system. John Lockwood and his team didn't use software. Instead, they created an open platform that augments a network with reprogrammable hardware, called the Field-programmable Port Extender (FPX). "The FPX can scan each and every byte of every data packet transmitted through a network at a rate of 2.4 billion bits per second. In other words, the FPX could scan every word in the entire works of Shakespeare in about 1/60th of a second," said Lockwood. Real products based on the technology should appear soon. More excerpts and references are contained in my blog which also includes a photograph of an FPX module." I'm a little confused as to what the big deal is about this. It's basically doing two things: put antivirus protection at the network level instead of the end client, which isn't a new idea at all and using an FPGA hardware solution instead of software (which they seem to be saying is faster). Am I missing something, or is this not that big of a deal?

Heart-stopping sandwich of the year

Heart-stopping sandwich of the year 08/23/2004 06:36 AM
Cory Doctorow: Maxim Magazine has selected its sandwich of the year: the Fat Darrell (invented by Darrell Butler during his sophomore year at Rutgers University) contains chicken fingers, mozzarella sticks and french fries. Maxim lauds it for its "drunken ingenuity."
"So, I'm standing there eating it, and all of a sudden the guy standing behind me says, 'That thing that guy's eating looks pretty good, can you make me one of those?' And, it was like a movie scene, the next 10 people order the same thing. So, I'm like, 'Whoa!' like I think I might be onto something. And the guy is like, 'Hey, man, this is cool.'"

That guy who assembled the sandwich was Abdul Eid, working in an R.U. Hungry food truck, parked in a campus lot in New Brunswick, catering to beer-soaked undergraduates with the late-night munchies.

Eid now runs R.U. Hungry Grill & Pizza, a store he was able to open in part due to the success of the $4.75 Fat Darrell, the flagship of R.U.'s "Fat" line.

Where's The Backup Plan For Stopping
Spam?
01/17/2004 10:47 PM
Normally, if you're trying to solve a difficult problem, you have a few different plans. If something doesn't work, you need to be ready to move onto plan B. I've been asking since the CAN SPAM bill was passed, how is the government planning to measure how successful (or not) it's been - and what's plan B? Now that it's becoming increasingly clear that CAN SPAM hasn't been even remotely successful - and has basically done nothing to slow down the rise of spam, I want to know again, what is the government's plan B? They were so proud of themselves for passing CAN SPAM, yet they included no money for enforcement, no way to measure how successful it was, and no plan B. In other words, yet another law that makes for a good press release, and a good sound bite at election time, but does nothing to solve a problem.

Money 2005: Microsoft Unveils Simplified
Approach to Financial Management and
Helps People Make Sense of Their Money
09/21/2004 08:41 AM
Marking the largest development effort for Microsoft(R) Money since the personal finance software was launched 13 years ago, Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT) today announced Microsoft Money 2005 Premium, Deluxe, Standard and Small Business. Completely rebuilt to simplify daily financial tasks, Money 2005 is designed to answer the growing number of consumer requests for a simple solution that addresses the three primary areas of financial concern: tracking account balances, monitoring spending and paying bills. Consumers today have less time than ever to spend managing their finances, which has contributed to the number of American households banking online -- due to its convenience and efficiency -- reaching nearly 33 million.(1) Money 2005 builds on this trend by helping people access all their accounts in one place and providing automated tools that reduce or eliminate the manual entry required by traditional personal finance software.

So Ted Hearn has a piece suggesting Kerry would be a big plus for big cable. I'm skeptical. Indeed, I'm positively encouraged by two facts friends have helped me see: (1) despite the pressure of his best buddy, Senator Hollings, Kerry did not support the Fritz chip, and (2) this letter to the FCC pushing the FCC to insist upon non-discrmination in the context of the AOL merger, long long before non-discrimination was the way others were framing the question.
