SAAD (System Administrator Appreciation

SAAD (System Administrator Appreciation
Day)
07/30/2004 11:51 AM
You know, it's that time of the year again when we all should be reminded of the depressive caffein addicts that talks to himself/herself while wandering down the hall. Today, the last Friday of July, is the System Admin Appreciation Day. They day that system administrator world-wide should (for once) be appreciated for all the troubles that they have either gone through to keep everybody online.

<a href=http://www.sysadminday.com target=_blank>sysadminday.com</a>, for the fifth time, has kept us reminded of this day. Head over there to see what you can do to show your appreciation.

While we're on the subject of showing appreciations, don't be shy to hug <b>Redmak</b> when you see him.

Screenshot Storix Backup Administrator (SBA) provides both an intuitive graphical user interface and command line options for performing backups of a standalone system, or managing backups of all Linux and AIX systems on a network. In addition to backing up data onto a network server, tape, or disk device, it can reinstall a complete system from scratch, clone or migrate systems, manage volumes and RAID devices, and restore data in any configuration you choose. It features easily accessible documentation.
License: Other/Proprietary License with Free Trial
Changes:
New features include multiple exclude lists for different backup jobs and clients, network booting for Linux, multiple boot loader support for Linux on Intel-based systems, and selective file restore using a file tree similar to the Windows Explorer. A Windows (SMB) backup feature and an encryption feature are available for an additional charge and require a separate license key. The Windows backup feature allows SMB clients to be backed up from a Linux host. The encryption feature can encrypt backup data with either 128-, 192-, or 256-bit AES encryption.

I'm moving this site to a new host later this afternoon, so you might have problems reaching it while the DNS propagates. Hopefully things will be back on track in 24 - 48 hours.

Kinja launches

Kinja launches 04/09/2004 04:11 PM
Kinja, the Web app for reading weblogs that Meg and Nick have been working on for the past year +, has launched as a beta. It's still a bit rough around the edges (especially design-wise) and a little schizophrenic as to who/what it's targetted at, but it's neat to play around with. I like that it reads like a weblog...which is not the case with RSS readers...something I never liked... (with comments)

Kinja announcements

Kinja announcements 04/09/2004 04:06 PM

After 15 months in the making, I'm pleased to announce that Kinja, a new weblog reading tool, has launched today. We worked really hard on it and hope you'll check it out. On a personal note, I'm spending another month at Kinja and will be leaving at the end of April. I'm sure I'll have more to say about that in the future, but for now, check out Kinja and some assorted media coverage:

People have been asking (not really), so I thought I'd let you know that MetaFilter, Megnut, and A Whole Lotta Nothing are down because of a bad computer fan. No ETA as of yet on when the box will be back up. Matt Haughey was unavailable for comment due to laziness on my part, but if he were available, he'd probably say something like, "you tell those ungrateful bastards that...

The reason I write megnut

The reason I write megnut 01/07/2004 05:44 PM
Earlier today, I happened upon old posts (never published) about Parisian restaurants. I decide to publish them, for no reason. My friend Alaina reads them and thinks, "Meg will like this Parisian food weblog. I will email it to her." She does. I read the email and then load up Chocolate & Zucchini in my browser. I am instantly in love, even before I see the entry for Oeuf Cocotte. I am now anxiously awaiting the time to read all the archives, and even more anxiously awaiting my (currently unscheduled) return to Paris. I've got a serious Paris jones. I've got a serious Chocolate & Zucchini crush.

Update!! Chocolate & Zucchini author Clotilde is a software engineer! But wants to leave it all behind for a cooking a career. She's my French twin!

Help megnut find a new home

Help megnut find a new home 04/09/2004 04:06 PM

For ages and ages now this site has been hosted by the very generous Matt Haughey. But the load on the server (it hosts Metafilter, among other sites) has been heavy from the beginning. And I think it's time for megnut to find a home of its own. So I'm looking for recommendations for great hosting plans.

My requirements are fairly straightforward: I need to host more than one domain and want the ability to create sub domains. I want Apache/Linux. I would like MySQL, PHP and Perl. I'd like something that's very reliable and can offer a fair amount of bandwidth. Oh yeah, and customer support that's not staffed by assholes. That's it. Do you have someone to suggest? Do you love your hosting provider? Is there someone you think I should avoid? Tell me.
