Timmy Turner, hero of Nickelodeon's Fairly Oddparents, has the answer for everything: "Somewhat impulsive, he often tends
to make wishes without thinking about the possible consequences of his
actions, or how to explain his wished-for stuff ('where'd you get
that? Timmy: uh...

Iowa Computing, purveyor of

Gay marriage satire
Gay marriage satire
07/27/2004 01:18 PMThe Fafblog continues its reign as the funniest political satire blog
on the Net with today's post about gay marriage in the form of a
mock-interview with the Family Research Council's Dr. James Dobson:
[JD]: The legality of gay marriage sent out powerful shockwaves of
destructive gay energy throughout hetereosexuality. Without an
amendment to the constitution specifically barring homosexuals from
obtaining marriage rights, this destructive Gay Force rampaged
throughout the Traditional Family Nexus, corrupting it and turning
thousands of upright, decent, missionary-position-loving straight
couples into deranged, out-of-control mutant gay perverts.
FB: This is horrible! What in your scientific opinion as a doctor can
we do to stop this?
JD: Well, humanity's only hope at this point lies in the Marriage
Protection Act, which would strip federal courts of the ability to
review the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act. That way
if the draconian anti-gay laws we need turn out to be
unconstitutional, we'll never know, because the courts won't be able
to stop them.

Revisiting Barcode Replacement Satire
Revisiting Barcode Replacement Satire
05/11/2004 03:16 PMA little over a year ago there was a huge media frenzy over a site
that
let
people view and print out barcodes. It was really just a database
of barcodes, but the site presented a satirical commercial showing how
you could use the site to "name your own price" and re-code any
product to a price you preferred. Of course, actually doing the
re-coding would be illegal. Running a database telling people how
seems perfectly legal... unless you're lawyers at a big company like
Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart and a number of other big companies
forced
the site to shut down, and the folks have now set up the site as a
Wal-Mart spoof.
John
submitted a story about
the
whole mess one year later. It sounds like those involved didn't
expect the level of backlash they got - especially from the press who
labeled them as the thieves. Still, they've now got other plans up
their sleeves for satirical projects.

04/11/2004 12:28 AMVia Wonkette, here's a slightly unfair

Bush's jokes about weapons of mass destruction. Media is in the
hands of everyone, and people are going to use it to hold powerful

People seem to really be embracing web video as a

than text. Very interesting to see how this form develops.

LotR movies remixed as trenchant Russian

05/18/2004 04:11 PMDmitri Puchkov is a Russian ex-cop who goes by the alias Goblin.
"Goblin" is his nom-de-edit when he's remixing Lord of the Rings,
dubbing in Russian dialogue to lampoon cops, oligarchs, and gangsters.
He's working on a re-cut of Star Wars now. (This is old news, but I
only just read about it)
Frodo Baggins is renamed Frodo Sumkin (a derivative from the Russian
word sumka, or bag). The Ranger, Aragorn, is called Agronom (Russian
for farm worker). Legolas is renamed Logovaz, after a Russian car
company famed for its Ladas. Boromir becomes Baralgin, after a Russian
type of paracetemol.
Gandalf spends much of the film trying to impress others with his
in-depth knowledge of Karl Marx, and Frodo is cursed with the filthy
tongue of a Russian criminal.
The films - which Puchkov says were originally made for his close
friends but have now gone out on the internet - have found cult appeal
in Russia's crowded pirate market, where a pirated, high-quality DVD
in both Russian and English costs £5. That is all ordinary
Russians, who earn only $300 a month in Moscow, can afford. The
Russian pirate industry is worth $311 million, and has grown by 25 per
cent since last year, pirates making more than 40 million disks a
year.

Sorry I missed the party
Sorry I missed the party
05/14/2004 12:17 PMWhile evereyone else was out partying last night (Acteva also had a party) I was working to
change the world - bringing DLAs to the masses.
More on my efforts later.
But for now - congrats to Ev and Jason. I wonder if Orkut was
there?
Smells
like 1999.
Last night I attended the Blogger relaunch party at SF
26Mix. It was a pretty cool bash - and I mean the food, the music
and the locale were pretty trendy. What struck me was the names and
faces from the past, those who had become party regulars were all in
full force. Jay Shellen, Evan Williams and a whole bunch of
Blogger gang were in attendance, and so were the folks behind Craigslist, Newsmonster, Feedster and of course the queen of
valley gossip, Chris Nolan.
James and James of AmIhotornot were in attendance
as well.
It reminded me of the parties in 1999 when the dotcom madness was
in full swing. Lately I have been getting more of these party invites
and there seems to be a certain buzz, back in the air. The rentals in
San Francisco are inching up slowly, the traffic on Highway 101 is
turning into a weebit of a nightmare, and even magazines are trotting
out some familiar names. My magazine for instance has a story on Mary
Queen of the Net Meeker, Nick Denton of Gawker Media. and
a couple of others. Wired is having a NextFest. What makes it more like
1999, is the fact that a whole lot of journalists are talking about
blogging as their salvation (which may or may not be
true!) and quitting their jobs to do something with blogs.
Back in the day, they were talking about web as their escape key. I
think the hype machine around blogs is in high gear, and while it
might make some like Rafat Ali
or Nick Denton very rich, there is little or no hope for many of
us.
In short, it smells and feels like 1999. Let the party begin - free
vodka and canapes, hell I am not complaining.

12/30/2004 04:51 PMThe tsunami-warning blame game -- could the
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
have done a better job
alerting Indian Ocean countries after learning of the earthquake?
-- takes a new turn Thursday.
The Washington Post reports that the
Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty Organization, based in Vienna, surely
would have picked up the earthquake "but it had no chance to alert
governments in the region because its offices were closed for the
holidays." In fact, the network doesn't even possess a communication
system capable of channeling early warning signals to the region.
Should it? Writes the Post: "Bernard Massinon, a French seismologist
who serves as scientific adviser to the test ban organization, said
the agency's seismic stations -- including eight in Indonesia,
Thailand and Sri Lanka -- could technically be linked to an early
warning system for earthquakes and tsunamis if member states decided
to do it. 'Could we help by providing real-time data from this
network?" he said. "The answer should be yes.'"

Missed Call Scam Showing Up In The UK
Missed Call Scam Showing Up In The UK
02/18/2004 01:19 PMApparently, over in the UK there's a new scam that involves tricking
people into calling expensive per-minute "premium" numbers. It works
by randomly dialing mobile phone numbers and having
the system hang
up after one ring. This way, the caller ID on the phone records
the number. When people call back, they're told they've won a prize,
but have to call another number to receive it. That second number is
a premium rate number with high per-minute fees (though, the caller is
never told that). While concerned people in the article make this out
to be a big deal, I wonder how many people are actually fooled. Do
people actually call back unknown caller ID numbers on their phone? I
always assume if they didn't leave a message it's not important or a
wrong number. Second, if you do call that number back and you get a
message saying you'd won
and that you need to call
another phone number - how many people would actually believe
it? It screams out "scam!" I guess there are a lot of gullible
mobile phone users out there.

Is It Illegal To Order A Movie From
Overseas?
12/17/2003 01:13 PMEarlier this week, we had the story of Miramax
sending
out threatening letters to a movie review site that simply
linked to a site that
used to sell movies that had been
released in Asia, but not in the US. So, now, Wired News is exploring
the tricky legal question of
whether
or not you're allowed to buy foreign DVDs of movies not released in
the US. The conclusion is that you can probably buy a single copy
for personal use. Maybe. You can't, however, sell it anywhere. So,
if you go into a store, and they offer films (or, I imagine, music)
that were released for sale outside of this country, it could be
illegal to buy them. Apparently, despite having this nice global
economy we're all supposed to be a part of, intellectual property law
still means you could be breaking the law if you are buying and
selling products not from this country.
