According to a PC World article, backlighting will be improved using LED technology. Sony plans to ship the first line of LED-backlit TVs, dubbed Qualia 005, in November. “These televisions will not be cheap,” we’re told. “The 46-inch model will cost 1,102,500 yen (about US$10,000); the 40-incher will cost 840,000 yen (about US$7600).” IDC analyst Bob O’Donnell predicts, ‘In the near future, [they won’t be] common because they’ll be too expensive. Sharp Releases 3D Flat Panel (Finally)

Sharp Releases 3D Flat Panel (Finally) 08/10/2004 08:48 AM

ll-151-3d.jpg imageSharp has finally released its 3D flat-panel LCD monitor, a 15-inch version creatively dubbed the "LL-151-3D." Sharp, Sony, and other display manufacturers worked to develop a standard for the 3D monitors, though, which means that investing in the $1,500 unit means it should continue to work with future products for a while. While the technology is intended primarily for gamers, Sharp hopes to also sell units to scientists and bathtub chemists who have a need to view molecular structures and the like in 3D.

No special equipment is required to see the 3D images, but users do have to sit directly in front of the screen to get the full effect. (Thanks, Teemu!)

I'm in the market for a new flat-panel monitor, so Trusted Reviews' eight-way 20- and 21-inch flat-panel comparison was right up my alley -- at least until I realized it was, like, 1902913 pages long. So unless you're into the total nitty gritty of flat-panel testing, ignore all their hard work and skip to the end, where they offer up three good-looking and good value monitors for your consideration. Samsung and Viewsonic I sort of expected to see on there, but the third company I'd never even heard of.

Acer's Three New Flat-Panel LCDs:
AL1732d, AL1932d, and AL2032wd

acer_20al2032.jpgAcer has announced three new monitors in their Prestige LCD flat-panel line, the AL 1732d, the AL 1932d, and the AL 2032wd. The first two models are fairly standard 17- and 19-inch models, with 1,280 by 1,024 pixel resolution, and a very decent 12 millisecond response time (faster is better to prevent blurry moving images), but the 20-inch AL2032wd could be pretty nice, with a 1,680 by 1,040 pixel widescreen resolution and a pretty affordable price tag. All the panels have built-in speakers, if that's your thing, too. The prices are $330, $490, and $650, walking up the line.

Sony has taken its impressive X-Brite/X-Black LCD flat-panel technology out of its VAIO notebook computers and placed it in a couple of new standalone monitors, the 17-inch SDM-HS74P and the 19-inch SDM-HS94P, both of which share a native resolution of 1,280 x 1,024. If you haven't seen an X-Brite screen before, it's worth checking out. While you won't mistake it for real life, no birds will try to fly through it or anything, but the special anti-glare filter that Sony uses really does make for a nice looking monitor. The Register doesn't have prices, but a cursory scan of the web shows prices around $600 for the 17-inch model, and around $850 for the 19-inch.

Oh, and the response times -- the refresh rate, basically; the thing that determines how good moving images look -- are nice, as well, with a 12ms rating on the 19-inch and a 16ms on the 17-inch.

lg_1980q.jpgThe technical specs of the LG Flatron 1980Q flat-panel monitor aren't that impressive, especially when considering the $800 price, but it does have one neat trick: the ability to be flipped over 150 degrees, automatically switching the image to show correctly past the apex. While that sounds perfectly useless at home, it could be useful on the desk of a bank executive, showing you exactly to what depth your will be penetrated by the terms your new mortgage.
