03/13/2003 10:22 AMThe new Macromedia site is
simple and clean and I like it, though I'm finding it takes me more
steps to find things they used to have on the front page of their
site. Granted, the home page used to be cluttered and offered 50
options of where to go.
The most interesting thing I found on the new site was their new commitment to user experience issues as a
cornerstone of their business.
While I can picture the marketing team sipping lattes in their "war
room" with a huge banner carrying their new slogan "great experiences
build great businesses", it's refreshing to hear a major web firm
(especially one known for reducing usability in the past
*cough* skip intro *cough*) realize the importance of user experience
on their bottom line.
Adap
tive Path has been preaching this for the past couple years, but
it's nice to see a major corporation listening.

Google Maps and user experience
Google Maps and user experience
04/06/2005 12:06 PMEarlier this week, Google integrated their recently acquired Keyhole technology into Google
Maps, allowing the user to toggle between the abstract map view and a satellite view. The addition was pre
tty big news, and I was pretty excited
when I saw this feature, as were many others. Matt
Haughey even did a Maps/Flickr mashup in creating a memory map of his
childhood stomping grounds; others followed suit.
The ability to view satellite images online has been around for
years in the form of Microsoft's Terraserver (and also on
a mapping site that I can't locate right now...I swear Mapquest let
you switch back and forth between the two views, but I can't find it),
so this really isn't anything new. Terraserver lets you zoom in/out,
move around the map, and view other versions of the map (they have a
topological version), and I know that many of the people who are so
excited about Google Maps are familar with it. So why is everyone so
excited about it?
Part of it is Google's involvement...they draw a crowd of attention
anytime they do anything these days. But it also has a lot to do with
someone I wrote about a couple of years ago: it's the user experience, stupid:
Robert Morris from IBM argued last year at Etech 2002
that -- and I'm paraphrasing from memory here -- most significant
advances in software are actually advances in user experience, not in
technology. Mosaic was not an advancement in technology over TBL's
original browser. Blogger is a highly-specialized FTP client. IM is
IRC++ (or IRC for Dummies, depending on your POV). The advantages that
these applications offered people were user experience-oriented, not
technology-oriented.
The satellite feature on Google is no exception. They took
something that's been around for years, made it way easier to use
(reposition & zoom maps without reloading, pinpoint addresses and
routes onto the satellite imagery, toggle between sat and road maps,
map size automatically scales to the browser window, etc.), and
suddenly this old thing is much more useful and fun to play around
with. Ajax is the underlying technology (which isn't new either)
for many of the notable Google Maps features, but how Google used it
to make a useful user experience is the real story here.

Google's switch to answers.com was
driven by user experience
Google's switch to answers.com was
driven by user experience
03/14/2005 04:25 PMLast week, I wondered aloud
whether Google's switch from dictionary.com to answers.com for their "definition"
links was driven by concern for their users or was just a business
deal:
The cynic in me feels like money had to have changed
hands in order for this to have happened (maybe Google is an investor
in GuruNet, maybe GuruNet paid for that placement), but the optimist
in me says that Google is still a weird little company where the
members of project teams can stumble across a better resource that
will make their users happier and more productive and implement it on
the live site quickly, even if the company that provides that resource
could be considered a competitor.
Marissa Meyer, Product Manager for Google, was kind enough to
respond to my query about it:
This decision was driven off of concern for our user
experience. We are not paying answers.com for this service nor are
they paying us. They were willing to work with us and design a website
that we felt represented an improvement for our users over what was
offered on dictionary.com (no pop-ups, dense information
presentation).
That a $50 billion American company is so focused on the experience
presented to its users, well, it's pretty impressive.

Improving the User Experience Online for
Library Users
06/28/2004 10:08 AMI would love to get a grant to have 37signals design an online
library catalog. I've been reading their book Defensive Design for
the Web: How To Improve Error Messages, Help, Forms, and Other Crisis
Points because I'm redesigning our merged web
site/extranet/intranet, and while most of the suggestions in the book
are fairly intuitive, most of us don't take the time to add in all the
little niceties and user-supportive framework. It's a very quick read
and an easy ILL for library webmasters.
It looks like I'll be using ColdFusion on a Windows server for the
new MLS site, so if anyone has suggestions for CF-based aggregators,
RSS-generators, bulletin boards, blogging software, and kitchen-sink
functionality, I'd love to hear them.

T-Mobile Sidekick II Review: Best Phone
I'll Never Buy
08/19/2004 03:13 PM
So I'm
heartbroken. I've just spent a week using the T-Mobile Sidekick II,
and I think it's probably one of the best mobile devices I've ever
used. And I can say, with total conviction, that I will never, ever
purchase one and neither should you. In fact, after the experiences
I've had today with T-Mobile, I'm not sure I can ever recommend one of
their products again.
You may have noticed I'm a little slow on posting today. The reason
is, besides being really, really high, is that I've spent about two
hours on the phone with various customer service reps trying to
resolve an issue that's been plaguing my primary account for the last
three months. I've stayed away from mentioning it on Gizmodo, because
I didn't want to turn my personal experiences into an overall
anti-T-Mobile bias, but after my experiences today, with the yelling,
the lies, and the misdirections, I am finally leaving them for good,
and I have received such consistent horrible, deceitful service that
I've come to realize it's indicative of a larger overall problem with
the company - and that's worth telling you about.
But first, let me explain why the Sidekick II is so awesome.

Quick-'n-Dirty methods to determine
which competing label is better: "Cell
Phone" or "Mobile Phone"?
Quick-'n-Dirty methods to determine
which competing label is better: "Cell
Phone" or "Mobile Phone"?
04/28/2004 11:39 AMOn the SIGIA-L mailing list, Stephanie Berger recently asked: "My
cohorts are not sure whether to use "cell phone" or "mobile phone".
Any evidence that one is better than the other, or one is used more
often than the other?"
This is a good example of the kind of labeling questions
information architects face all the time. The answer to these labeling
questions will depend on the target audience (a better label for
whom?), on business requirements (maybe the business want to promote
one term over the other) and on the context in which the label will be
used.
I'll discuss the conversation that followed here and afterwards
point to some useful tools for if you have a labeling question
yourself.
Andres Sulleiro: "Without any empirical data I will go with
my own opinion. [...] A quick survey of the phone carriers seems to
suggest that "wireless" (as in "wireless phone", "wireless customer")
is most common among US carriers, though you see some references to
"mobile" as well. T-mobile, a European company, uses "mobile" which is
more common in Europe as well as being the name of the carrier."
Method: check what other websites call it.
Jason Cho: "I think "cell" is more widespread in the US as
Andrés noted. "Call my mobile" can sound pretentious to Yankee ears.
But I would think everyone understands the term "mobile" on a business
card."
Method: personal experience.
Peter Van Dijck (and others): "Google for "cell phone" (including quotes):
6,230,000, Google for "mobile phone": 6,360,000.
Looks like a tie, assuming your audience is similar. Just pick one and
make sure your search engine knows both terms."
Christina Wodtke: "Y
ahoo for cell phone : 16,800,000, yahoo for mobile phone: 21,200,000. What does
this really tell you? you'd have to know who each engine indexes, how
much of the web, etc.. better to use a magic 8 ball. ;-)"
Method: check popularity of the terms on the web.
Peter Van Dijck: "My next step would be to find out what
people search for on your site,
or if not available, on the web (assuming that's more or less your
audience). Google
adwords can help."
Method: Find out what people (preferably your target
audience) search for.
Dave: "I like "mobile" for the reason that Christina stated
(forward compatibility); USers and non-USers will equally understand
it. Also, it is more interoperable w/ most of the vCard based
addressbook programs out there. I don't know any that are using
"cell" or "cellphone" ... I also like the clear and easy two word
approach of "mobile phone" ... I'm always wanting to say "cellphone"
where "cell phone" is really the more correct version. "cell" though
just doesn't feel like a real word b/c the "cell" doesn't fit a
meaning to me. I know what it means if I am forced to think about it,
but it really doesn't mean anything to me at all."
Method: personal experience, check what software programs
use.
Christina Wodtke: "> As can Ove
rture's keyword tool (couldn't find URL straight away).
You also might consider some adaptation of the freelisting
technique on a subset of your target. E.G., a write in survey: what
portable electronics do you own, then analyze for use of "cell phone"
and mobile phone".
Method: freelisting technique.
Eric Reiss: "Having worked closely with several
telecommunications companies, including Tellabs (US), Nortel (Canada),
ADVA (Germany), and NetTest (Denmark), this discussion is one I've
heard before. Europeans generally don't recognize the term "cell
phone." North Americans seem to accept both "cell" and "mobile." ATT
insists on promoting the term "wireless." In most instances, we've
agreed on the word "mobile" since it is understood by the widest
audience. Nortel, for instance, used "cell" almost exclusively until
the late 90s, but now leans toward "mobile." I think there is a trend
here."
Method: ask the subject matter experts.
Pabini Gabriel-Petit: "There's also Wordtracker.
[...]
In this vein, you might try just walking up to people, holding up your
cell/mobile phone, and asking them what they call it."
Method: Analyze what people search for.
Method: Find out what labels your users use.
Quick-'n-Dirty methods to determine which competing label is
better.
So, as a review, here are some of the methods used to determine
which label is better.
1. What do you think?
Method: personal experience/insights.
2. What do your users think?
Method: freelisting
technique.
Method: Find out what labels your users use: show them the item
you're trying to label and ask them what it is. (You could build an
online tool for this).
Method: Find out what people (preferably your target audience)
search for / check popularity of the terms on the web. Ove
rture's keyword tool. Google
adwords. Wordtracker. Google and Yahoo both list how often a term is
used on the web (use quotes around your terms!).
3. What do the experts think?
Method: ask the subject matter experts.
Method: check what other websites/software call it.
Gotcha's: be careful when using these techniques. You are
looking for a label that works for your audience and your business
requirements. Most of these techniques use audiences that may be very
different from yours, and most are indicative only (ie: they're not
hard science). Use your judgement.

don't drink!) And no carbs, just meat and cheese.
Bay
Area Mobility Forum. Things are, as always, insanely busy at the
moment.
So continuing the thought from Saturday, I think I've gotten some
great reception to the idea of having an "un-conference"/get together
about mobility. Since I'm up in Emeryville and not technically in
Silicon Valley, I decided to call it the Bay Area Mobility Forum. I
just registered mobilityforum.org as well.
Now, what's the best way to organize online? There's three ways I
can think of - I can:
1) Start a Yahoo Group. But I think that's aging platform. Yes,
once upon a time it was cool, but now mailing lists are so
passé.
2) Start a wiki. I could grab JSP Wiki and have it up and running
in a matter of minutes. And I think Wikis are wonderful and cool and
all that, but I may be too type-A to deal with the hassle of a zillion
people editing pages without control.
3) Start a blog. I think this is probably the best option. And I'm
not even thinking about using *my* weblog, but the new Blogger. It
supports multiple authors, comments, etc. It doesn't supprt RSS which
sorta sucks, but the rest is pretty great.
I'm partial to the blog because it's easier to diseminate timely
information, comments are great ways of getting feedback without
getting things lost in discussion groups, and by inviting multiple
authors, I can - like Mobitopia - take the load off me when I flake
out and move on to other shiny things that catch my interest.
In terms of the what the goal is of the get together, I think it's
a great idea to copy wholesale from the OWC.
Thus:
The Bay Area Mobility Forum mission is to cultivate and
accelerate Silicon Valley's mobile and telecom sectors through
leadership, technology, government relations, research, education,
mentoring, investment, recruitment, networking and promotion.
And free beer. Let's not forget the free beer. And
pizza too.
So in the coming days, I'll throw up a blog, invite people who are
interested in helping me organize this thing to become editors, we'll
figure out a good date for the inaugural meeting (we can use my
current offices at WaveMarket - where there's a conference room for
about 50 people and a couple board rooms for sessions), guage interest
among potential attendees, figure out some topics to chat about and
maybe get a few mobile-sector leaders to give a presentation, send
some emails to everyone I can think of getting them to show up with
their gadgets and other mobile toys...
Actually, most people will show up for the beer. I just want to see
the gadgets. No one gets in the door without a cool toy. (Just
kidding).
Comments welcome.
