I stick a CD into my computer and have my music player of choice
catalog the CD that my music player goes out to the CDDB database and
pulls in all of the info that I would otherwise have to type myself.
Album Graphics, Title, Song titles and a lot more information. Who is
the savior that came up with this technology. Well a Wired article
today takes a look at Gracenote the company behind CDDB. [Wired

Will Mini iPods Delete Bigger iPods?
Will Mini iPods Delete Bigger iPods?
01/07/2004 06:38 PMWell, as every other tech site in the world is now telling you, the
not-so-secret rumors that Apple was coming out with a "mini iPod",
cleverly named "iPod mini"
are completely true. The other
big story people are focusing on are that Apple has gotten past their
Henry Ford-style color options, and will offer the iPod mini in
multiple colors. You can read all the details at other sites, but in
looking over the stories about the device, I'm wondering if the iPod
mini will replace the iPod itself as the popular music device of
choice. Personally, I don't own an iPod or any portable digital music
player (I barely have any digital music - so buying such a device
would only mean I need to rip all my CDs, which is a project I'm still
not ready to bother with). Still, the iPod mini seems to make a lot
more sense to me than many other portable music devices. The early
MP3 players had way too little memory, but once you get up into the 4
gigabyte range, I wonder how much more some people need.
Historically, of course, that's a dangerous viewpoint to take - since
we've
always figured out ways to fill up empty storage space.
With Apple even advertising games, calendars and other iPod apps - you
can imagine that the memory will go. However, if I were in the market
for such a device, I'd definitely go with the mini iPod version right
now: it's a better size for carrying around and it's "good enough" in
terms of storage space - not to mention that it's cheaper. Thus,
while I'm sure there are some people who simply
need to have
more storage space, I'm wondering if this mini iPod will steal
marketshare away from its big brother.

Microsoft MVPs revolt: I wish them luck, but there ain't a chance
Microsoft is ever going to do anything that backs away or compromises
.Net in any way.
Over 100 Microsoft MVPs (Most Valuable Professionals) have signed
an online petition that demands Redmond resume development and support
of "classic" Visual Basic, a-k-a VB6. [...]
It's "basically" impossible to migrate programs written in earlier
versions of Visual Basic to the .NET version. [...]
Microsoft's product managers will likely say this is not the case,
and will point to migration tools and strategies the company offers.
But those product managers aren't the poor bastards faced with
rewriting millions of lines of source code to reinvent crucial
applications, nor do the Microsofties have to swallow hard while they
lose dependable business logic refined over decades.
I could see Microsoft resuming support of VB6, but
development of it? No.

Why do iPod lovers had Real?
Why do iPod lovers had Real?
08/18/2004 04:33 PMNelson makes a very good point: I'm puzzled by the backlash against
RealNetworks for figuring out how to get music onto the iPod. Sure, I
think Real makes crummy products too. But they've opened up Apple's
proprietary platform, increasing choice for consumers and lowering
prices. How does the user lose? Now I'm all for bashing Big Evil
Companies that do Stupid Things, but I'm also a fan of cracking open
that little white music jail too. Like Nelson, I don't...
