Guardian today:
Bollywood movie fans will soon be able to download full-length
features with the file-sharing software Kazaa. A deal struck between
a partner of Sharman Networks Ltd, the company which owns Kazaa, and
IndiaFM.com, a popular entertainment site, will allow Indian film
producers to distribute movies, music and other large, rich media
files online to an estimated 60 million international Kazaa users.
The move follows a pilot scheme in November when Bollywood thriller
Supari was offered for sale at US $2.99 and promoted through Kazaa
prior to its release in India. The file was designed to self destruct
after being watched and could not be copied.

A few days ago,
Jonno pointed me to a
Bollywood-flavored remake of Michael Jackson's "Don't Stop Til You Get
Enough," which he found on a supercool sekrit MP3 blog that shall
remain nameless. This track is phat. This track is funky. This track
makes me want to do a little dance in my
ergonomic
chair. A little google-digging reveals the song is by a group
called the Bollywood Freaks, and came out on a limited edition red
vinyl 7" in the UK. I want to send them money for the funk they
provide. I want more of their music. If anyone has info,
cough it up.
But for now -- look! Someone dumped a copy of said funky track on a
server somewhere. Download the MP3 while it lasts. Link

"The Bollywood movie market is growing at twice the rate of Hollywood,
in terms of production and revenue. This is where the benefits of P2P
technology become really clear," Sharman CEO Nikki Hemming said in a
statement. "P2P technology offers the movie industry a huge

60 Minutes: Google, Battelle, and
Bollywood
01/02/2005 11:06 PMXeni Jardin:
Well -- not all together in the same story, though that might have
been even more interesting.
The CBS television program 60
Minutes featured a lengthy segment on Google this evening which included
astute comment from John
Battelle, who moonlights as BoingBoing's Reuben
Kincaid when he's not writing books,
building empires, and tracking search tech trends here. Snip from the transcript:
"If anybody got a Porsche or a Ferrari right now at Google, they’d
probably be drummed out of the company," observes John Battelle, an
author and entrepreneur who has been following Silicon Valley
companies for 20 years. He says, "Google has a brand image to
maintain. And their image is they’re all about innovation and
they’re all about the Internet, and they’re all about trust.
They’re not about selling out. They’re not about getting rich
quick. So you’ve got a culture like that; I think if anyone were to
buy, you know, a new Mercedes convertible and drive around with the
stereo blaring, and miss work a couple days because they’re rich
now, that would not be acceptable behavior at Google.
"But trust me," he adds. "There’s a Mercedes convertible in every
one of their heads. There is. And it will…come out. Over time, it
will come out."
The show also included a killer piece on Indian film star and
hyperbolic superbeauty
Aishwarya Rai. Snip:
The reason Bollywood films have such universal appeal is because
they’re squeaky-clean. There are no sex scenes, not even kissing.
Every time you think someone’s going to do it, they'll burst into
song instead. "I'd assume that's really a reflection of our society,"
Rai says, when asked to explain the films' modesty. "Of course people
kiss and of course people have a very healthy love life. This is the
land of the Kama Sutra. But nevertheless, in our society you don't
really see people around the street corner kissing or being extremely,
overtly, physically demonstrative publicly. They do it privately but
not publicly."

Far from a waste of time, David's terrific site includes a "bollywood

"Don't Stop 'til You Get to Bollywood," BoingBoing reader
Mike says:
This was only a very slightly re-tweaked version of a tune from an
early 1980s Bollywood soundtrack, as sung by the well-known Indian
singer Usha Uthup. (The tune's original title is "Chhupke Kaun Aya".)
The Usha Uthup version has just been re-released on CD in the UK, as
part of a 2CD mix set called "The Trip", mixed by Tom Middleton.
But you ain't heard nothing yet! Usha's greatest work, which dates
from the same era, is the utterly INSANE "One Two Cha Cha Cha". (This
also quotes from a classic disco hit.) This track is available on a
1997 compilation called "In Flight Entertainment Vol.2" - and also as
an MP3 on my blog for the next week or two.

Vishal says, "This Ad is really popular in India, and I was surprised

It features one of the hottest young actors in Bollywood, Vivek Oberoi, and features

12/23/2003 05:39 PMThere have been a few stories about "legitimate" companies doing deals
with Kazaa, but once you get past the headline, you realize that it's
not true at all. Just like all those other deals the headlines
trumpeting a deal between some
some Bollywood film makers and
Kazaa isn't really about Kazaa at all. Instead, it's a deal with
Kazaa's sister company Altnet, which runs a service within Kazaa to
distribute approved copy protected content. So, this isn't at all
about film makers understanding the promotional value of free
downloads, but rather them trying to piggyback copy protection (in
this case files that supposedly "self-destruct" after a single $3
viewing) on the popularity of Kazaa. The deal isn't even that good.
$3 for a product that self-destructs after a single viewing? You get
a better deal going to the local video store. Meanwhile, though, they
get all the publicity of having the film "offered on Kazaa". All
Altnet is really doing is bolting a pay-for service (like iTunes) into
Kazaa. It doesn't leverage the real benefits of a distributed file
sharing network at all.

02/05/2005 09:25 PMXeni Jardin:
Terrific
SF Chronicle article about a Bollywood dance
competition taking place in San Francisco tomorrow. Snip:
Growing up in Calcutta, I rarely watched Hindi films. Going to the
movies usually meant viewing English-language evergreens like "Born
Free" and "Willie Wonka," or hoary literary classics with dialogue in
my native Bengali. Bollywood was a risqué world with money but little
class where the vamps flashed thigh and cleavage and the heroes kept
their shirts unbuttoned. At my school, we had regular "hair check"
days, at which school staff made sure our locks were not curling over
our collars like some "two-bit Bombay film star." We knew Bollywood
produced more films than Hollywood, and millions of Indians queued up
on opening weekend to buy tickets on the black market, but I was
taught to look down my nose at the genre's kitschy excess.
Now, to my surprise, Bollywood is entering the American mainstream,
thanks to movies such as Mira Nair's art-house hit "Monsoon Wedding"
and the Bollywood-inspired pageantry of "Moulin Rouge." Indian beauty
queen Aishwarya Rai recently appeared on "60 Minutes," and rapper Dr.
Dre was slapped with a lawsuit for mixing a snatch of an old Hindi
song into his single "Addictive." It's also hit academia in
media-studies courses on campuses from UC Berkeley to MIT.
Link (
Thanks, Brian "Badass" Lam!).
Update:
Boing Boing reader Kevin H
points out that the author of this SF Chron story appears to have made
a minor error:
Dr. Dre didn't have a single called "Addictive". The single was for Truth Hurts, and it
featured a blistering Rakim rap. Truth Hurts is an artist on Dre's
label Aftermath Records. DJ Quik produced the single. It drips with
hotness.

from the online past:
"Another corporate '70s Bollywood spoof, this time by Absolut Vodka. ~10 minute film,
made in 2002, filmed in India. It's a Bollywood pseudohistory of the
mullet.
Entertaining enough story (a little long...) - but really
well-crafted, with awesome songs and dancing. Low-level product
placement - no actual bottles or mention of vodka - but the familiar
Absolut shape makes subtle appearances."
The film's hilarious, but -- OMGWTF! Do my own eyes betray me? Look
closely at the faux promo poster screengrabbed at left. Is the male
lead in Absolut Mulit not wearing a shirt with the exact
same pink vomit print that
Vivek Oberoi wears in the aforementioned Vanilla Coke Bollywood
ad? Perhaps this is a secret, ironic reference to pink vomit
couture featured in a real Bollywood film -- and I'm not enough of an
Indian cinema buff to get the joke. If any intrepid BoingBoing readers

tell.

BoingBoing reader Kevin Slavin says,
I just got back from Mumbai yesterday, and it's true about the scale
of the Baazee uproar -- it's front page full-width headlines, first
the scandal, then the arrest, then the arrest scandal, etc.
Worth noting is the echo to it, also front pages over there -- a
phonecam snap of some Bollywood celebs kissing in public. It provoked
a series of suprisingly fierce newspaper debates over Public Displays
of Affection in India overall.
There's a funny logic behind that, considering that almost no one saw
the event itself, and that the real Public is the viewers of the news
networks which broadcasted the image. The distributed image was
considered the documentation of public-ness, rather than a further
expression of it.

10/29/2003 12:12 AMHow important is the ability to tell the difference between data
sent by POST and data sent by GET (i.e in the query string) when
developing web applications? Some web frameworks (such as PHP) provide separate
mechanisms for accessing POST and GET data. Others (such as Python's
cgi
module) provide a single interface to form information that
doesn't distinguish between the two. I already have a strong opinion
on this but I'm going to leave it open for discussion here for a bit
before weighing in.

06/23/2004 11:06 AMOver the past few days a number of sites have commented on the fact
that the new Beastie Boy album
comes with
copy protection (though, apparently not in the US or the UK,
according to some). While this set off the usual
argumen
ts about
why DRM
is bad, The Register has rewritten the story as if
t
he DRM is a virus or similar malware. They may have a point. The
DRM is silently installed without alerting the user as soon as they
put the CD into their computer. It prevents their computer from
functioning the way it was designed to. In fact, the article suggests
the fact that it's installed without asking the end user or getting
permission may constitute a crime. I'm not entirely sure, but I think
the CDs do note on the case that they come with copy protection, so it
is possible that sticker could be considered "letting the user know."
Still, this does raise some important questions about DRM and whether
or not it will violate any anti-spyware law that's being discussed,
since most of them focus on the fact that they're installed without
explicit permission.

The Difference Between Spin And An Angle
The Difference Between Spin And An Angle
02/12/2004 02:44 AMThis week, Techdirt got a lot of attention for pointing out the
extraordinarily different takes on a speech by former Dean campaign
manager Joe Trippi from
blogger
s and a reporter from Reuters. If you read the different
accounts, you would have sworn they were at entirely different
speeches. Lots of websites picked up on that story and linked back to
us - but now, former Reuters reporter Jeremy Wagstaff (who writes for
Far Eastern Economic Review and WSJ.com - and on his own excellent
blog) is taking me to task for calling the Reuters report "spin". He
says
there's a very important difference between "spin" and an "angle"
and points out (absolutely correctly) that a journalist's job isn't
necessarily to write up a summary of the entire speech, but to pick
out the newsworthy point and write about that. He points to other
press coverage of the same speech and notes that they all pick up on a
different aspect of the speech. He also gives the standard reporter's
excuse about deadlines and how things accidentally "creep into"
stories where they don't belong. He points out (once again,
correctly) that one of the nice things about blogs is that they give
an alternate source for more info and context which the reporters
don't do (it's not their job). These are all good points, and worth
thinking about - but I still don't take back my original comments.
While a reporter's job is to find out what's newsworthy and write
about it, that does not mean taking something out of context - which
is
clearly what was done with that Reuters article. If you
listen to the
speech, Trippi spends the entire speech talking about what a
revolutionary force the internet is when it comes to politics.
Whether you believe that or not, if you read the Reuters report, you
don't get that impression at all. You get the impression he blamed
the internet. Giving people the impression of something that clearly
was not being said is not an angle. It's
spin
(scroll down to spin) - and Reuters should be ashamed.

industry needs to figure out a way to adjust to that reality. The
original question (what happens if people can get their music for
free?) is like asking "but, what happens to buggy makers when
automobiles are around?" The answer seems obvious to everyone, except
those involved in the recording industry: they adapt or die. The
recording industry is so focused on what they
want to happen,
that they've missed what's actually happening. The article also
suggests that, so far, Magnatunes is doing quite well, and has the
potential to be a viable longterm business - based on the idea of
giving away music as a promotional good.
The Difference Between Innovation And
Invention
The Difference Between Innovation And
Invention
03/22/2005 07:03 PMFor all the talk about protecting innovation, we've often pointed out
that the patent system seems to do the exact opposite -- making it
more difficult for those who are actually innovating, while giving
money to those who haven't done anything at all. Last year, Michael
Schrage wrote an interesting piece pointing out the very important
diffe
rences between invention and innovation, where he noted that
innovation is more important -- but the patent system is more about
protecting invention. Basically, plenty of people or companies who
"invented" an idea were never able to capitalize on the idea at all.
It took others who actually innovated and built off that idea to make
a product that
actually had an impact on the world. Helping to
prove that point are
a
bunch of example cases where the initial inventor of something wasn't
the one to make it valuable. In a market driven economy, the real
winner is the company that can make something valuable through
innovation -- not the inventor who happens to come up with something
that the market may or may not want.

Is There A Difference Between Piracy And

08/10/2004 03:43 PMNearly two years ago, we wrote about a piece by Larry Lessig looking
at how the comic industry in Japan was thriving based on
copycat
comics that would normally be seen as infringing works in the US,
forcing entertainment industry lawyers to shut down these fan-created
efforts. In something of a followup to that piece, Henry Jenkins has
written about how
so-called "piracy" has been a huge help in making Japanese
anime popular and commercially viable in the US. Clearly,
the easy distribution of digital content has different effects -- some
of which are beneficial and some of which are harmful -- for the
creators of that content. By assuming that only one of these effects
exist, companies that are cracking down on "piracy" without realizing
they may be hurting
free promotional activity are doing damage
to their own business.

The Difference Between Offer And Provide
The Difference Between Offer And Provide
05/28/2004 12:31 AMYesterday, there was a lot of attention paid to Comcast's decision to
catch up to other US broadband providers and add a VoIP option to
their list of services. In the announcement they focused on how this
VoIP service would be offered to the 40 million homes they service.
Most of the press picked up on that number and it became a big story.
However, it looks like that 40 million is a bit misleading. Comcast
may reach almost 40 million homes - but most of those only get cable
TV service.
Only 5.5 million currently receive broadband access from
Comcast - which is a significantly smaller number. Obviously, the
number of broadband subscribers will grow (perhaps rapidly) and
offering a bundled VoIP offering could even help it grow - but it's a
still quite far away from actually providing 40 million users VoIP.
Technically, a company like Vonage could go out and claim that they're
"offering" VoIP to a much larger audience - because Vonage can be used
on almost any broadband line. It's all in the difference between
"offer" and "provide."
On a difference between wonks and
geeks...
On a difference between wonks and
geeks...
03/06/2004 01:55 AMHere's a suggested difference between geeks and policy wonks that
might go some distance towards making the two groups get on with one
another better. It is my contention that the two groups simply have
radically different registers and types of interaction. Policy wonks -
like all politically oriented people - are encouraged to think in
terms of combative point-making. The most respected and well-thought
through acts of Parliament being those that have been fought over the
most. The most convincing politicians are the ones who have solid
positions that they can stick with and defend. Political life is a
combative life, with positions being tested and retested before
they're taken out into the world. In terms of doing things you
want to know that the thing you're going to do is the right thing
before you get too far down the line, particularly when the
consequences of getting things wrong are so potentially enormous.
The life of the creative geek community is very different. The
atmosphere of an event like ETCon is not one of absolutist positions
(or at least it is on occasion but it's mostly frowned upon), but of
gradual accretion, iteration and development. Particularly (but not
exclusively) in those realms where development requires time but not a
lot of capital investment, ideas are thrown out into the world to see
if they'll stand or fall. Those that succeed are iterated upon. Those
that fail are either abandoned or taken further by other groups who
will try to solve the errors and mistakes that surround them. In terms
of making things, each new idea is expected to be flawed and
clumsy and full of holes and everyone knows it and works from that
point onwards. It's the model of the technologist community as
competitive craftspeople, and it operates on the assumption that
whether something will be successful or unsuccessful / useful or
useless is something that must be left up to how people interact with
it and its take-up with a community. You make it the best you can, in
the way you think is right, and let the world decide if you got it
right...
I think this is the distinction that explains why there are so many
disagreements between the groups. One group looks for immediate
application where there may be only potential. One group sees
possibility where there is no immediate practical benefit. And in
talking to each group, you have to use a different register. There's
no point talking RDF to policy wonks, because they'll see no
application until you can show them something made with RDF that they
consider actually politically useful. And there's no point telling
technologists that their creations are politically naive, because
they'll consider them works in progress, building from a position of
naivety towards - in time - something legitimately useful and
ground-breaking.
It's a difficult job - understanding which register to use in which
circumstance - but it's an important one for those people who have to
straddle disciplines. Because one way or another they're going to have
to work with geeks or wonks who will by necessity have a very
different mind-set. Being aware of the distinction will not only
create the possibility of legitimate discussion (and minimise the
possibility of large cross-disciplinary enmities) but also inspire
actual creativity to emerge between the disciplines...
