Here Comes Digital Cinema

Here Comes Digital Cinema

Here Comes Digital Cinema 12/23/2003 06:56 PM

We've been hearing about it for years, but it appears that movie theaters are finally starting to go digital. Better yet, it sounds like they're doing so for the actual advantages of digital, rather than the ridiculous perceived value that was being hyped up a few years ago. Sure, the picture is nicer, but most people find today's movies "good enough" - and some people have even claimed they don't like digital cinema since they believe they can see artifacts like jagged edges. However, the theaters that are going digital are realizing that it means they have much more flexibility with content. They're not just showing movies, but also are showing live sporting events and music concerts which can be delivered digitally in real-time. Also, as smaller theater chains, like the independent Landmark chain (now owned by dot com billionaire Mark Cuban) go digital, it will open up new opportunities for new filmmakers to get their films shown without going through the big Hollywood gatekeepers distributors. While the big Hollywood studios focus on the wrong things, it appears that movie theaters are beginning to figure out what's happening.

06/07/2004 07:29 AM

Sony0607.jpg imageBuilt specifically not for consumer markets, the new Sony digital cinema projectors, the SRX-R110 and the SRX-R105, are top-end "4K" projectors meant to replace traditional film and lamp technologies with a killer 4,096 x 2,160 resolution. By using a Silicon X-tal Reflective Display (SXRD), the 10,000 lumen SRX-R110 can, when projecting a 16:9 image onto a 27-foot wide screen, shows images where each pixel is "only about the size of the letter 'e' in 'Liberty' on a quarter." Sony recommends the 10,000 lumen SRX-R110 (the SRX R105 is 5,000 lumen) for screens between 25 and 40 feet wide. You can even split the screen into two 1,920 x 1,080 images or four 1,024 x 540 images simultaneously (the press release says four 1,920 x 1,080, but I question that math). Sony offers a "2K" design in their high-end consumer Qualia line of electronics. (Sony, if you'd like to send a product review sample I'd be happy to knock out a wall.)

Press release after the jump.

South African villages to get digital

04/05/2005 09:23 PM
Xeni Jardin: Excerpt from Variety article:
The vast majority of South Africa's 40-million people have never been to the cinema, kept away by the legacy of apartheid, poverty and language barriers. But the nation's exhibs are hoping to change that by using the indigenous filmmaking along with digital technology to connect to the missing multitudes (...)

Starting in September, Shout Africa will roll out 20 digital cinemas around the country where facilities are most lacking, to make the movies affordable and accessible. Shout Africa chief executive Lance Samuels says that for local producers, these cinemas will provide another distribution outlet as well as the opportunity to build new audiences.

Locally produced films in indigenous languages and English will be shown alongside foreign features, with subtitles in the vernacular language of the region of the cinema.Besides the usual popcorn and soft drinks, popular traditional township foods such as maize porridge, spicy sausages, samp (hominy), mealies (corn on the cob) and fried chicken will be on sale to help make the d-cinema experience more African.

Samuels says d-cinemas will be located in revamped township community centers to create a quality experience, including comfortable chairs, high quality digital projection and state of the art surround sound. And, hoping to seal the deal, prices will be much lower than at urban multiplexes.

Wonder what kind of gear the company will be installing? Will this be true cinema-grade digital projection, or something cruddier and lower-res (and, hence, more affordable)? Either way, it's fascinating news, and points to one of the greatest promises of this technology. Which hardware manufacturer(s) will be involved?

Here's more info on the "Shout Africa" d-cinema initiative, Link, by way of Sithengi -- a company that promotes the South African television and film industry.

Digital Cinema: Ireland's movie theaters
to convert within a year?
03/22/2005 04:59 PM
Xeni Jardin: The current issue of Wired Magazine includes a feature I wrote about digital cinema -- interviewees include d-cinema evangelist and Landmark Theatres owner Mark Cuban; filmmaker James Cameron; and hardware makers including Texas Instruments and Sony. It's not online yet, but I'll be posting related news clips here on Boing Boing, and will blog the Wired piece as soon as it's up.

Today: news of a planned digital cinema network throughout the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, with the ambitious goal of converting all of the country's movie theaters to digital format within about a year.

"The digital projection offers picture-perfect quality and significant cost savings," says Moira Horgan, the head of marketing for the Irish Film Board. "The boxes are being inserted as we speak."

Avica Technology is bringing the digital presentation systems to 515 screens throughout Ireland to run alongside traditional 35mm film projectors, says Kevin Cummins, spokesman for Avica Europe, the European arm of the Santa Monica, California, digital cinema technology and services company.

"Digital can reduce the cost of distribution, eliminating the need for costly reels of film that need to be printed, delivered, collected once the cinema is done showing the movie, and then destroyed," Cummins says. "From the (average viewer's) point of view, digital provides picture-perfect quality. The movies just look a lot better, from the first showing through to a thousand showings."

Spider-Man didn't impress me much. DareDevil seemed too short. The only super thing in Superman III was the computer at the end of the movie. X2 was almost close to okay. I haven't seen LXG yet - and we'll see how wellPunisher fares. I didn't have much hope for Hulk, but... it's about the only one I've been impressed with so far. We found a used 2-DVD set for $10 at Blockbuster the other day - and the package is definitely worth twice that amount. The cinematography is fantastic, the special effects are realistic, and the story is well balanced. Give it a spin if you haven't already. I hear the game is just as good, too....

Blu-Laser Cinema Player 06/06/2005 12:08 AM

blulas_cin.jpgI'll cop to being a little unsure exactly what the Blu-Laser Cinema Player is exactly, at least from a format perspective. I think it's Blu-ray, since they mention that in their press release, but I'm not entirely sure. I did put together that the $6k player isn't exactly meant for home use, instead marketed towards content producers who need to screen high-def works-in-progress while at home. And adding confusion to the strange, each model of the Cinema Player is built-to-order, but the only customization is which codec it uses. Why not use them all?

A growing number of vendors now use Flash videos to augment the obligatory lists of customers, features, and benefits that they publish on their marketing pages. It's a strategy I highly recommend. What hadn't occurred to me, until it happened this week, was that users might do this for you! [Full story at InfoWorld.com]
Here's Paul Everitt, whose spontaneous act of software demonstration motivated the column:
It's funny how these things happen. I put very little consideration into making that narrated demo. I had posted something about XSLT and said it was easier than advertised. In a weblog comment, someone asked for evidence to back up my assertion. I offered to make a recording, he took me up on the offer, and I spent 15 minutes with no post-production to respond to him. [Zope Dispatches]
Exactly. "15 minutes with no post-production" is doable on a whim. When the activation threshold is low enough, things can happen that otherwise wouldn't. ...

David Pescovitz: The secret society behind the subterranean cinema re cently discovered by police in Paris have come forward. According to a Guardian article, the mission of the group, called La Mexicaine de la Perforation, is to "reclaim and transform disused city spaces for the creation of zones of expression for free and independent art."
"There are so many underground networks - the quarries, the metro, the collective heating, the electricity, the sewers - and each is the responsibility of a different bureaucracy... Urban explorers are the only people who, between us, know it all. We move between each network. We know where they link up - often, it's us who made the link. The authorities, the police, town hall, they don't know a hundredth, a thousandth, of what's down there."
