Vonage UTStarcom F1000 VoIP Phone

Vonage UTStarcom F1000 VoIP Phone 01/04/2005 01:43 PM

vonage_utstarcom.jpg imageVonage is dropping some killer gear on us today, with product announcements that include this new Wi-Fi Voice-Over-IP handset from UTStarcom that will let Vonage subscribers make calls anywhere they can log onto a Wi-Fi connection. With an 80-hour standby time and three to four hour talk time, the F1000 looks practical enough to use as your primary phone, not to mention extremely handy to have around as a secondary communications sidearm. Plus, you're sort of getting a Wi-Fi location device for free.

The UTStarcom F1000 is a standard SIP phone, as well, meaning it can be used with other Voice-Over-IP platforms besides Vonage.

Traffic signal prankster

Traffic signal prankster 06/22/2005 01:49 AM
David Pescovitz: A prankster in Sunnyvale, California has been toying with traffic lights across the city for three months. Police say he or she has turned them to face the wrong way, altered the timing, and made them flash red in all directions. From the San Francisco Chronicle:
"There is evidence that whoever is doing it knows what they're doing," (city spokesman John) Pilger said. "The evidence suggests they're an electrician or have that background. This isn't a high school prank."

Further puzzling investigators is the fact the traffic trickster used a cherry-picker truck to reach an overhead signal spanning a busy intersection -- apparently without anyone being any the wiser, Pilger said. What's more, the practical joker has effortlessly opened the control boxes that contain the signals' electronic guts.

Cell-Phone Towers' Mixed Signal (The
Motley Fool)
03/31/2005 05:45 PM
The Motley Fool - Let's get this said right up front: Cell-phone towers are downright ugly. Their appeal is that they are critical infrastructure for what's still a fairly new technology. Plus, new cell-phone features, like cameras and email, should hopefully increase the level of use and penetration relative to other developed countries, which would bode favorably for tower operators' businesses.

McCaw Buys Company with Spectrum Assets

McCaw Buys Company with Spectrum Assets 04/28/2004 03:53 PM
Craig McCaw has reportedly bought a Texas company, Clearwire, that has ITFS spectrum assets: The ITFS band is near the MMDS spectrum but was set aside primarily for educational institutions. During the last period of interest in MMDS, during the mid-1990s, some companies, including Clearwire apparently, negotiated with the educational institutions to use or buy the spectrum. The spectrum wasn't widely used by the educational organizations that controlled the spectrum. McCaw has long been interested in fixed wireless broadband. He founded XO Communications, which owns LMDS frequencies, in the mid-1990s. XO recently joined the WiMax Forum. ALso, Nextel owns a bunch of MMDS spectrum that it bought from Worldcom. McCaw has assembled a who's who list of execs to run the new company, being called Flux. Many of them are McCaw Cellular veterans and have held posts in other McCaw companies. Notable are Nicholas Kauser who was the CTO for AT&T Wireless and currently sits on the board of numerous Seattle companies; Rob Mechaley, who was one of the founders of RadioFrame and before that Wildfire; and Gerard Salemme, who has been involved with several McCaw companies including satellite company ICO. McCaw is notoriously mum about new ventures so it wouldn't be surprising if we don't learn details about this one for a while. But with real WiMax products becoming available in the near future, it would certainly be fair to suppose that the company may have ambitions of rolling out a fixed broadband offering using WiMax....

Best Wi-Fi Signal Finder Yet

Best Wi-Fi Signal Finder Yet 04/22/2004 05:19 PM
Chrysalis previews their WiFi Seeker, a keychain sized device for instant Wi-Fi signal finding: Chrysalis sent me a demo unit of its just-unveiled WiFi Seeker, which they designed to differentiate 80211b/g networks from other devices. Two previous Wi-Fi signal finders fell short in ways the Seeker does not. The Kensington WiFi Finder is relatively large (credit card sized) and scans before displaying the results instant of a constant active scan--but it can tell Wi-Fi from junk. WFS-1 from SMart ID is much cooler offering a no-industrial-design-intended box with instant scanning--but which "hears" all 2.4 GHz signals the same. object classid="clsid:02BF25D5-8C17-4B23-BC80-D3488ABDDC6B" codebase="http://www.apple.com/qtactivex/qtplugin.cab" height="196" width="232" align="left" hspace="4"> Push the button on the WiFi Seeker and it scans briefly, often under a second, before displaying a signal strength in zero to four LEDs. Keep the button held down and it's a Wi-Fi dowser, allowing you to move around and see immediate response to different signal strengths. It's more directionally sensitive than the WFS-1. Chrysalis will sell the device starting in June for $29.95. Earlier, PC Tel has said they would make the device available to their customers, so one presumes that Chrysalis can sell custom branded versions of the device....

Linksys Boosts Signal--Legally

Linksys Boosts Signal--Legally 07/07/2004 12:55 PM
Linksys releases legal antenna add-ons for several of its Wi-Fi gateways: We've said it in this space before, and we'll say it again: in the U.S., you cannot legally mix and match antennas with Wi-Fi gateways. The FCC's Part 15 rules require that you only use antennas that were certified with the gateway that they were designed for. In response to a recent query made by a colleague of mine, the FCC wrote back a very clear response: When using Part 15 (2.4GHz) devices, mixing and matching components is a violation of the rules. Only systems can be certified. Please see http://wireless.fcc.gov/outreach/2004broadbandforum/comments/ YDI_externalamps.pdf. There you go. Oddly, it is perfectly legal to sell antennas separately from gateways without violating any laws. It's only deploying them that is technically illegal. We haven't heard of any letters or prosecutions, however. Linksys isn't getting around this, but has rather taken several antennas and several gateways and paid the fees to get each of the combinations certified in a matrix. This cost them at least a few hundred thousand dollars in fees and associated expenses entirely separate from the development costs of the antennas themselves. Linksys has two kinds of antennas and matching stands for each. One add-on, the TNC Connector Antenna, is designed for two-antenna systems: WRT54GS, WRT54G, WAP54G, BEFW11S4, and WAP11. The one-antenna device, the SMA Connector Antenna, works with more specialized equipment: WRV54G, WMP54GS, WMP54G, and WET54G. Both antenna types cost $60 each (suggested retail), while the respective antenna stands are another $30. The stands allow mounting the antennas to a wall or ceiling....
