Wasn't Trained? Wasn't Trained?

Wasn't Trained? Wasn't Trained? 05/19/2004 04:48 AM
One of the comments on the Iraq prionser abuse that I hear often on BBC World Service is that the prison guards wasn't trained for their role, as if this will lessen the guards' alleged crimes.
I, on the other hand, find this justification somehow absurd. If, say, the guards aren't performing in their job capacity -- maybe some prisoners escaped, for example -- then, yeah, one can use the excuse that they aren't properly trained. But, to abuse prisoners (allegedly)? Does one need training in order to know that you are not supposed to stack naked prisoners as a human pyramid?

Tropos's equipment tested by NASA as an idea for manned Mars missions: Next thing you know, there will be a Mars Communications Commission (MCC) insisting that a single newspaper and television station could provide all the news on the Red Planet. Mesh wireless equipment makes sense for the terrain and goals of the mission. Will the low pressures affect signal transmission? And then there's hardening against radiation and temperature. I guess we have 20 to 40 years to figure it all out....

Kevin Marks mentioned on the cc-metadata list that you can query Technorati for a list of recently syndicated content, grouped by Creative Commons license.

You can also drill down and get a list of recently syndicated content under a specific Creative Commons license.

The results are a bit rough now, but one can easily imagine combining license searches with keyword and other search filters to effect an ongoing search for specific licensed content. For example, tell me whenever a Creative Commons licensed image of horses is syndicated.

Marks, who works at Technorati, indicates this sort of capability is "an important future direction." Other blog and search outfits take note.

(Glenn found the beautiful horse image linked above via the Creative Commons search engine.)

CC-licensed prose: "Always Be Closing" 05/04/2004 08:10 AM
Casey Childers has produced a chunk of Creative Commons-licensed prose called "Always Be Closing." It's the same scene, told thirteen times, with (often NSFW) variations, a remix of something that has no original, a kind of simulacra. He's chosen a license that allows for noncommercial remixing -- I'm curious as to what new works can be made out of these often disturbing scenes.
The waitress interrupted, "You boys need anything?"

The old man grinned, his mouth full. He made a quick effort to swallow, but didn't hesitate to speak around the mess of potatoes that remained. "The name of the man that cooked my lunch, miss. This is heaven on a goddamn plate."

She returned a grin of her own. "His name's Merv, hon, and I'll be sure to pass that along. Now how 'bout a warm-up on your coffee?"

"I served with a commie sympathizer who went by the name of Merv. He had weak stomach, you know, loved to recite the poems he wrote about his wife. He got his head blown off in a French whorehouse."

Democratizing Innovation as CC-licensed

Mark Frauenfelder: I've been reading the print version of Eric von Hippel's Democratizing Innovation, an interesting book about the way that "lead users" are making significant contributions to the development of products and services. Von Hippel is a professor of management of innovation and entrepreneurship, at MIT's Sloan School of Management.
Democratizing InnovationIn this traditional model, a user’s only role is to have needs, which manufacturers then identify and fill by designing and producing new products. The manufacturer-centric model does fit some fields and conditions. However, a growing body of empirical work shows that users are the first to develop many and perhaps most new industrial and consumer products. Further, the contribution of users is growing steadily larger as a result of continuing advances in computer and communications capabilities.

You can download the entire book at no charge from von Hippel's site.
Link

UPDATE: Peggy Salz of TheFeature interviewed Eric von Hippel today.

TheFeature: In your book, you talk mostly about product development. How do you know the lead-user approach can also create breakthrough services?

Von Hippel: A field study involving a major Swedish mobile telecoms company recently tested this and produced some surprising results. These researchers adopted the "toolkit innovation method" and supplied a sample of university students tools to develop their own services. Compared to the services generated by professional developers the students' services were by far more novel, creative and cutting-edge.

For example, one girl was frustrated because she was unable to find an apartment. She cleverly developed a mobile alert service that would contact her phone every time the university web site posted an ad for an apartment that fit her requirements. This insight can obviously become the basis for a suite of mobile alert services.

Sex toys still banned in Alabama, guns

Sex toys still banned in Alabama, guns
okay
07/29/2004 09:55 AM
A decision issued yesterday by the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals says Alabama doesn't have to lift its silly, arcane 1998 law banning the sale of sex toys. The Constitution does not include a right to sexual privacy, the panel of three judges ruled. Many Americans would disagree, including this one. To paraphrase Andre w Orlowski's brilliant quip about the INDUCE Act, under this law one could stroll down Alabama's southern streets selling semiautomatic rifles and dildos, and be arrested for the dildos.
"In this case, the American Civil Liberties Union ('ACLU') invites us to add a new right to the current catalogue of fundamental rights under the Constitution: a right to sexual privacy. It further asks us to declare Alabama's statute prohibiting the sale of 'sex toys' to be an impermissible burden on this right. Alabama responds that the statute exercises a time-honored use of state police power -- restricting the sale of sex. We are compelled to agree with Alabama and must decline the ACLU's invitation. (...)

"Alabama's Anti-Obscenity Enforcement Act prohibits, among other things, the commercial distribution of 'any device designed or marketed as useful primarily for the stimulation of human genital organs for any thing of pecuniary value.'"

This calls for massive civil disobedience. FreeTheAlabamaVibrator.com is still available, people -- it's time to stick it to the Man. Here's the decision in PDF. More on the story here, in a Seattle P-I piece. And during National Orgasm Week, no less. Is nothing sacred? H ere's a PDF summarizing the state's gun laws (Alabama's congresscritters are against renewing the Assault Weapons Ban, which expires on September 13 -- evidently the state's pro-gun lobby is much more powerful than its pro-vibrator lobby). (Thanks, Baptiste Coulmont)

Guns and jets

Guns and jets 03/08/2004 11:03 PM

My friend Brad, a jet pilot with heroic flying skills, graciously agreed to help me with the Commercial maneuvers and precision landings today.  We hauled N505WT out of its hangar and headed out to Worcester with the GPS turned off and the gyro-stabilized compass covered up.  Flying along at 2500' it was actually a bit tough to pick out landmarks from the VFR chart.  After 10 landings we decided it was time for some of the free cookies that they bake at the Worcester FBO (airplane gas station) so we taxied into the ramp.  The scene was one of utter desolation.  The main terminal building looked empty.  The last scheduled airline flights from Worcester ceased about one year ago.  The general aviation area contained a small collection of cheap piston-powered airplanes (like mine!).  At Bedford, N505WT's home airport, there is always at least $300 million of private jets on the ramp, waiting to take hard-working public corporation executives from golf game to weekend house.  The woman behind the desk confirmed that not a single jet had landed at Worcester all day.

As we were starting up N505WT a good-sized business jet was taxiing in.  A van drove up to meet the passengers at the side of the $10 million twin-turbojet-powered plane.  "What luxury!" we thought.  "This is the only way to travel.  They're probably just back from a resort in Mexico."  A couple of guys got out of the van and walked around the plane wearing guns.  Security for someone important!  The one passenger got out, a teenager wearing a rather plain jumpsuit.  Then we noticed that his legs were chained together...

Yet another thing that America's richest and poorest citizens share:  traveling by private jet.

Oh yes, speaking of guns.  A friend from the MIT Media Lab sent around a home video yesterday.  It seems that he has put the filmmaking skills that he learned there to good use and has made effective use of the Internet in distributing his creation.  Click right on the following link and then "Save Target As" before playing from your own hard disk in a separate player window (100 or 200% size is best): boyhood dream.

Twenty years ago people talked about Arpanet/Internet leading to an explosion in video creativity and distribution but it just wasn't practical with the available bandwidth and percentage of consumers hooked up.  Today all the pieces are in place.

Following up on our previous post about the Pentagon's new Active Denial System (energy beam) and other "non-let hal" weapons, here's a New Scientist feature about the state-of-the-art in ray guns:
"...the $9000 Close Quarters Shock Rifle projects an ionised gas, or plasma, towards the target, producing a conducting channel. It will also interfere with electronic ignition systems and stop vehicles.

'We will be able to fire a stream of electricity like water out of a hose at one or many targets in a single sweep,' claims XADS (Xtreme Alternative Defense Systems) president Peter Bitar."
