Will Mini iPods Delete Bigger iPods?
Will Mini iPods Delete Bigger iPods?
01/07/2004 06:38 PMWell, as every other tech site in the world is now telling you, the
not-so-secret rumors that Apple was coming out with a "mini iPod",
cleverly named "iPod mini"
are completely true. The other
big story people are focusing on are that Apple has gotten past their
Henry Ford-style color options, and will offer the iPod mini in
multiple colors. You can read all the details at other sites, but in
looking over the stories about the device, I'm wondering if the iPod
mini will replace the iPod itself as the popular music device of
choice. Personally, I don't own an iPod or any portable digital music
player (I barely have any digital music - so buying such a device
would only mean I need to rip all my CDs, which is a project I'm still
not ready to bother with). Still, the iPod mini seems to make a lot
more sense to me than many other portable music devices. The early
MP3 players had way too little memory, but once you get up into the 4
gigabyte range, I wonder how much more some people need.
Historically, of course, that's a dangerous viewpoint to take - since
we've
always figured out ways to fill up empty storage space.
With Apple even advertising games, calendars and other iPod apps - you
can imagine that the memory will go. However, if I were in the market
for such a device, I'd definitely go with the mini iPod version right
now: it's a better size for carrying around and it's "good enough" in
terms of storage space - not to mention that it's cheaper. Thus,
while I'm sure there are some people who simply
need to have
more storage space, I'm wondering if this mini iPod will steal
marketshare away from its big brother.

merely being an iPod mini rumor.

Rumors: Get 'em while they're hot
Rumors: Get 'em while they're hot
03/14/2005 04:23 PMWe all remember our first Mac rumor. Like our first tooth, kiss,
paycheck or car, the first time we navigated to MacRumors or
ThinkSecret or AppleInsider, and stumbled upon a tidbit that allowed
us a glimpse into Apple’s fortress of development.
It used to be that rumors were accurate about 50 percent of the time.
And that was half of the fun — trying to decipher which parts of which
rumor were correct, inaccurate or just completely fabricated.
Raise your hand if you can remember iWalk.
In recent years, however, a few rumor sites — especially ThinkSecret —
have gotten a little too precise. For the most part, Apple’s
announcements have become a matter of formality, as the community
at-large (and often mainstream media outlets, too) have already
received, absorbed and dissected the news, leaving little else save
the decision to purchase.
You have to admit, it's kind of taken the fun out of things. I mean,
we were actually surprised when the iPod came out.
No, really, we were.
So, when Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge James P. Kleinberg
ruled Friday that "an interested public is not the same as the public
interest," part of me was eager for a return to the Apple of yore,
when a Macworld keynote was a reason to stay up all night in
anticipation.
(The other part of me was deeply afraid that journalistic integrity
and responsibility would continue to be eroded until the only source
of reporting would lie somewhere between supermarket tabloids and FOX
NEWS, filled with half-truths and barely relatable sound bytes, all
slapped under a 140-point misleading headline. But that’s not the
point of this particular column.)
For the most part, I agree with Kleinberg's statement, even if the
ruling troubles me as a journalist. Apple’s trade secrets are, indeed,
stolen property, but it remains to be seen just how hard the company
can lean on the bloggers in question. Before the ruling, for example,
ThinkSecret published two more rumors on its site: one about iMacs and
eMacs, and one about Tiger.
So, will we return to a dry, rumorless existence? Will the fertile,
accurate soil that grows today's rumors dry up once Apple begins to
enforce its court-appointed power?
Or are we simply in store for a battle of rhetoric? Yesterday’s
reports on ThinkSecret cited "well placed sources" rather than the
traditional "reliable source" we've all come to trust so readily.
We've all seen countless rumor sites come and go, and come and go
again, but never have we faced such a bitter fight for dominance.
So grab 'em while you can, because reliable rumors may soon be as hard
to find as an iPod with a FireWire cable.
Or, I suppose, an iWalk.
Tungsten T6 Rumors
Tungsten T6 Rumors
03/17/2005 03:51 AM
The freshest rumors about
PalmOne's forthcoming Tungsten read a little lot like a fairy
tale, so we won't get our hopes up just yet. Features for the T6 (or
Tungsten 2005, as the case may be) include Bluetooth, Wavelan, 1GB of
Flash memory, a 3 MP digital camera, an ethernet port, iTunes
compatibility, an initial price of about $400, Graffiti 2 Plus with
voice commands and the ability to clean your teeth while you sleep and
print money.
To be perfectly honest, I'm not sure I have enough grains of salt
to accompany this list, especially considering the hat tip from
A_Man_In_Black in #gizmodo:
The Tungstens
consciously don't include cameras, because of workplace restrictions.
A new high-end Palm with a camera would be a Zire, not a
Tungsten.

A mini-guide to Mac OS X for new Mini
owners
02/01/2005 08:53 PMApple finally went and released an inexpensive computer. With the
advent of the Mac mini, some Windows and Linux users who have been
curious about Mac OS X but turned off by Apple's high prices have
finally bit the bullet and ordered a mini.
Trying an unfamiliar operating system can be irritating at times.
Things are not where you expect them to be, the GUI is different, and
connecting to servers and other PCs can be frustrating. Hence the
mini-guide.
This is not intended to be a comprehensive guide to all
things OS X. Its purpose is to help those new to the operating system
do simple things, like use a Windows printer, connect to a network
share, and figure out what the key with the funny-looking squiggle on
it next to the spacebar does (or even use your PC keyboard with a
Mac). So if you're an "adder" and are feeling a bit out of sorts,

surrounding the next Tungsten have just gotten even more
packed with whimsy. Palm Addict has received word that the new device
will have 4GB of internal memory, weigh in a bit heavier than the T5
and will include built-in Wi-Fi. It will not, however, be
called the T6, or even be part of the Tungsten line, for the rumor
whispers on that it will be released at the end of April as a new

Here We Go Again: Bad Reporters and Good
Rumors
Here We Go Again: Bad Reporters and Good
Rumors
06/06/2005 12:15 AM I can always tell when the news machine is slowing down. It's
kind of like there's sugar at the bottom of the Mac Web's gas tank,
really. When their news tank gets low they start to pick up the same
old crap at the bottom and try to use it to fuel the fires. What I
underestimated was the level at which they pick that crap up. It seems
that Mac reporters are very, very easily bored.
What I mean is that there's a good deal of news to actually cover,
what with Tiger coming out to stellar reviews in spite of it being
alpha-quality crap that has more bugs than the Temple of Doom. That,
alone, should be decent fodder. If not that, then the sudden
appearance of music videos in iTunes, or the supposed Babblecasting
capabilities that 4.9 is said to bring in the future. They could
bring up a whole lot of topics and keep them in the forefront with new
ideas and new spin. When that runs out they could easily be useful
and start talking about tips and how to get the most of the computer
(which is the only reason I still have a Mac World subscription,
really). No, they babble about the same crappy rumors to keep the hit
counter spinning for the Ad Lords.
I mean, some of us just don't post anything for months when there's
no news and nothing else comes to mind. It's not hard, really; you
just walk away and go do something with your life for a
while. It seems that some others just can't seem to handle that
concept.
So, what crap lies at the bottom of that tank? The usual suspects,
really. They are the insane ideas that spread like wildfire each time
they're brought up and cause the predictable and easily-incited hoards
of Mac fundamentalists to hit the message boards and their own
pathetic little blogs and write and write and write about how it will
(never) come to pass and how everyone else is just not seeing the "big
picture" and how this idea could easy (save|kill) Apple, and computing
in general! and so on and so forth.
Poppycock.
If you ever see an article on these topics, you're being played for
a fool and should ignore it:
- Mac OS X for PCs (and the variant "Apple moves Macs to
Intel")
- PowerBook G5
- Video iPod
- Movie store
- Apple-branded PDA
Let's just get it out into the open here and now, okay? Apple's
not doing any of them; not now, and not years ago when it was
first "reported" that they were. Quit daydreaming and get back on
track. Whatever Apple's next innovation is, you won't see it coming
until it slaps you across the face like the Apple bitch you are and
gives you that tell-tale "you had it all wrong, again"
look.
If it was easy to guess where Apple would steer the industry next
then Sony would have long ago stolen the show from them. Sony has
good designers, both aesthetic and electronic, and could easily best
Apple out of the "niche computer artisan" market if they had any sense
of direction at all. Well, and got rid of their NIH syndrome (ATRAC3-only in a digital Walkman?
Dear God, man, what were you thinking?).
So, look, what this boils down to is that the next damn time I open
MacSurfer and see a load of
bullshit like any of this, I'm just going to stop reading web sites
for a week. It's not worth sorting through this much stupidity and
naïveté just to find out that it was a slow news day.
If you're a writer for the Mac Web, I urge you to listen to one
piece of feedback: If there's nothing to report, stop
writing and wait until there is.
Thank you, and good night.

02/01/2005 09:53 PMOkay, first off: I've got a massive MacWorld / Borders / Trip to SF
and back report to write up. It's coming, and I hope it will be worth
the wait. Until I can get it done, there are some wonderful links in
the comments for my previous entry, from other bloggers who came to
MacWorld, Borders, or both.
My short version? It was awesome. It was everything I'd hoped it
would be, and more than I could have ever expected. The drive up was
great, and the drive home (without Anne, because she went over to
Tahoe to spend the weekend with her friend) was lonely, but enjoyable
because I listened to Jay Mohr's book Gasping for Airtime most
of the way. It's a interesting story . . . but you have to hear
him read it. It's the difference between listening to Dark Side of
the Moon and reading the sheet music.
Okay. Enough about the trip report that's coming. Here's the thing
that made me fire up this nifty browser called "Epiphany," and write
these words: I totally, completely, utterly b0rked my Debian machine
before I left for MacWorld. I don't know what I did, exactly, but
somehow it completely lost my mouse. modprobe psmouse and
modprobe mousedev did nothing, and I couldn't find anything
in a single online forum that would help me make my goddamn mouse work
again. I tried dpkg-reconfigure gpm. I tried
mouseconfig I tried cursing in lots of different languages,
and making Faustian bargains with gods I'm pretty sure I just made up
. . . I even taught myself how to recompile a linux kernel (the debian
way and the other way) . . . but no dice.
Finally, I gave up, and decided to just start over with a clean
partition and a new install. So I did mv /home/wil
/mnt/hda1/backedup/, did a diff to make sure I didn't
miss anything, and burned myself a copy of the latest Debian (Sarge)
Network installer.
Oh. My. God. Becky. It was so easy.
Okay. Seriously. Back in the old days of 1999, everyone told me how
easy it was to set Red Hat up, but how much cooler Debian was if you
could just get past the nightmare install . . . well, this was about
as easy an install of anything I've ever done. It was literally
a handful of commands, and then a bunch of waiting while it grabbed a
ton of packages and set them up.
I'm now sitting here with a honest-to-goodness Debian system,
running kernel 2.6.8!
Check it out:
wil@bender:~$ uname -a
Linux bender 2.6.8-1-386 #1 Thu Nov 11 12:18:43 EST 2004 i686
GNU/Linux
Okay, this is probably not as exciting to anyone else as it is to
me . . . but the fact that I got this working, and took all the
HAM radio and isdn stuff out of the kernel, and still got it to
work . . . it's a pretty big deal to me.
I'm logged into Gnome right now,( which I usually don't use -- I'm
a KDE or Enlightenment kind of guy -- but it looks beautiful) and I've
got apt installing Firefox and Thunderbird in a terminal, and then
I've got to restore some of the backups, but I'm very proud of myself.
Until I totally screw something else up, I feel like I can put on my
propeller hat and give it a mighty spin. *snort*
I've got an audition tomorrow morning, then I'm working on the
audio book of Just A Geek in the afternoon. Check back around
Friday for the full SF trip report, and some other cool news.
Oh, man! And if this moment needed to get any better . . . They
Might Be Giants just started singing Ana Ng on the radio behind
me.

PalmOne Tungsten T5 and E2 Rumors, Pics
PalmOne Tungsten T5 and E2 Rumors, Pics
08/30/2004 06:26 AM
So when I
mentioned that we had some older news that needed to be revisited,
this is basically what I was talking about. Some of the first
information about the PalmOne Tungsten T5 and E2 PDAs has come to
light, and while there's lots of interesting tidbits (rumor, of
course) like the T5's lack of a slider like the old one, I think the
most notable bit of news is that both of these will finally be running
PalmOne's BEOS-influenced OS6. There is also a planned (rumored) OS6
update for the Tungsten C and T3 after the new T5 is released in April
of next year. Looks like good stuff.
It is a little sad, in a way, to see Palm's form factor sort of
giving up the ghost and moving to a PocketPC-styled slate, but really,
it makes total sense. The silk-screened Graffiti area was really
played out, and if OS6 does everything it promises to do, we'll want
every bit of screen real estate we can get.
