Google's Privacy Policy

Google's Privacy Policy 08/05/2002 10:45 PM
Tara points out that Public Information Resource, as part of their Google Watch project has put up a page about Google's Privacy Policies. They point out that Google's persistent cookie (it expires in 2038) can be used to track Google users. I've refused Google's cookies for a long time for this reason. It's annoying because Google forgets my language and SafeSearch preferences, but since I search Google for so many things I'm especially concerned about my privacy. I wish Google would switch to a cookie that only stored specific preferences, rather than identifying information. I hope Google will respond with the reasons for their current cookie system. [Finally, a note on the weblog format. I feel safe in publishing negative comments like this because I know that most if not all readers check the site periodically, so there's little chance of someone getting incorrect and not seeing the correction.] Interestingly, they point out that Matt Cutts, a Google employee, spent a year at the NSA. Food for conspiracy theorists....

WhenU Violates Own Privacy Policy

WhenU Violates Own Privacy Policy 05/27/2004 12:09 PM
??Edelman?s research, detailed here, demonstrated that the transmissions back to WhenU?s servers include the web site URL being visited when a WhenU ad was displayed on the user?s system as well as other data. This seemed to contradict the then-current WhenU privacy policy statement that as ?the user surfs the Internet, URLS visited by the user (i.e., the user?s ?clickstream data?) are NOT transmitted to WhenU.com or any third party server.? And it unquestionably contradicts privacy promises WhenU makes in places where there is at least some chance ?customers? will see them before they are inflicted with the company?s software.?

Downloads As Promotions

Downloads As Promotions 08/27/2004 03:36 PM
This is something of an odd interview -- and it's not entirely clear why Business Week has chosen to use it, but it's with a kid who really likes some new band, and even though the band offers all of their music online for free, he still feels it's worth it to buy everything they release, just because they release it. The free music acted as a promotion that got him hooked, and caused him to go out and buy the albums as well as making sure he goes and sees them perform live as well. While it's just one anecdotal example, it does hold a lesson the industry needs to learn. Their first response, of course, would be that this is just one kid and they're trying to protect against everyone else who wouldn't be so honest. However, more to the point, there's a marketing message. The kid makes it clear that he'll buy a product he sees value in -- and it clearly has to do with the packaging and the band behind it. The industry continues to think they're selling "music." But, they're really selling "the band" and everything that entails, including how the music is packaged (nice CD material? extra features?), concerts, fan-wear, fanclubs, access to the musicians and plenty of other things. Once they realize that, they can see that the music is simply a way to promote all of the above. Will some people just take the music and nothing else? Sure. But that's no different than people watching a commercial and not buying the product. The music itself has promotional value, which the industry seems to deny.

Roy Disney resigns from Disney, slams
Eisner
12/02/2003 01:43 AM
Roy Disney has resigned from the Disney Board of Directors, and has sent a scathing email to Michael Eisner explaining, in exorciating detail, exactly why he's leaving the company his uncle founded.
1. The failure to bring back ABC Prime Time from the ratings abyss it has been in for years and your inability to program successfully the ABC Family Channel. Both of these failures have had, and I believe will continue to have, significant adverse impact on shareholder value.

2. Your consistent micro-management of everyone around you with the resulting loss of morale throughout the Company.

3. The timidity of your investments in our theme park business. At Disney's California Adventure, Paris and now in Hong Kong, you have tried to build parks "on the cheap" and they show it and the attendance figures reflect it.

More bl0gmark tweaks

More bl0gmark tweaks 12/10/2003 07:53 PM

I'm up to 110 blogmarks now, and from my point of view they're the single most useful feature I've added to this site in a long time. I've modified my day archive pages to show the blogmarks added on that day, and I'm considering adding them to individual entry pages as well so that an entry is displayed along with the blogmarks added while that entry was at the top of my blog. The idea there is that I could aim to blogmark "related items" for the top entry, although obviously unrelated sites would end up in there as well.

The other thing I'm currently mulling over is whether or not blogmarks should allow comments. Jason Kottke's inline links get a decent amount of comment traffic but I'm not sure mine would get enough individual traffic to warrant a comments thread for each one. I could always add comments to the blogmark daily archive pages, although that could get confusing on days with a lot of comment-worthy links.

Does anyone actually look at the blogmarks? Would you comment on them or read the comments if they were available?
