Twists And Turns This Year In Internet
Law
12/23/2003 12:57 PM

No surprise, of course, but it's shaping up to be a pretty slow news week, with hundreds of either "year in review" or "predictions for next year" type of stories filling up the space. Most of these aren't all that interesting, but News.com is running a pretty good year in review of internet-related legal issues that gives a good summary of what's been happening. Mostly, the news isn't very good. Some bad laws, some bad rulings, and lots and lots of questionable intellectual property lawsuits. There were a few good rulings mixed in with the bunch, but on the whole, things don't look so great in retrospect.

Turns Out 2009 Will Be The Year Of 3G

Turns Out 2009 Will Be The Year Of 3G 05/04/2004 12:21 PM
For each of the past three years, someone has come out with a prediction that the current year would be "The Year of 3G" when third generation mobile phones and services would really gain user acceptance. Every year that's proven to be a very bad prediction. This year, is no different, as back in March people were once again saying that 2004 would be "The Year of 3G". Of course, there's just not that much 3G to go around (you're better off in Asia than elsewhere, but it's still mostly a 2G and 2.5G world). So, now, it turns out that it's not 2004, but maybe it's 2009 that will be the real year of 3G. At least that's what the latest predictions from Analysys Research seem to suggest. This isn't all that surprising. People in the industry always like to assume that customer adoption will be nearly instantaneous, and reality always lags behind. As we said a month ago, maybe we should just declare this the decade of 3G to cover all our bases. The other idea is to declare 3G dead (something some of the WiMax hypers in the press might actually do) - which seems to be the universal sign that a wireless technology is about to catch on.

Stolen Car Turns Up Twenty Years Later
On The Internet

Stolen Car Turns Up Twenty Years Later
On The Internet
12/12/2003 05:44 AM
Some things you just don't expect. If your car was stolen in 1983, you probably have given up hope by now that you'll ever see it again. But, you should never doubt the power of the internet. A man who had his 1968 Mercury Cougar stolen in 1983 is getting the car back, thanks to the internet. Someone posted a classified ad trying to sell the car, and while investigating the background of the car, someone figured out that the car had been stolen and informed the rightful owner - suggesting he buy the car. However, the true owner was still in possession of all the paperwork saying that he's the rightful owner of the car, and therefore shouldn't have to pay to recover his own car. Meanwhile, the guy who had it has been arrested for "possession of stolen property" - though, he says the car was a gift from his father. Over the course of twenty years, I imagine the car could have shifted hands a few times.
