Check Your Visa Transactions On The Card

Check Your Visa Transactions On The Card
Itself
04/29/2004 05:04 AM
Smart credit cards with built in chips never really took off in the US as was expected, but Visa is apparently experimenting with an even smarter credit card. They're testing cards that actually contain a tiny display screen on the card itself. The idea is that you could check your balance or your recent transactions directly on the card itself. The screen runs off of the smart card chip that no one was using before. Right now, they say the display-in-cards are a bit too fragile, but they expect to figure out how to make them more durable by next year. Of course, the other problem is that such tiny, flexible, durable displays built onto a credit card are going to be quite expensive. There are also some concerns about what data to show, and how to keep any sensitive data private. Perhaps this could work with the voice activated credit card everyone was talking about last week - though, you have to imagine that's only going to make the price go higher. Of course, as various wireless companies are working on ways to build payment technologies directly into the mobile phone, some may wonder why they need an actual credit card (smart or not) at all.

More And More Credit Card Transactions
Happen Online
08/06/2004 04:41 PM
Due to the growing interest in e-commerce, an increasing percentage of all credit card transactions now happen online. The article quotes someone pointing out that this is no surprise (it isn't... at all), but also saying: "It's convenient, secure and ideally suits the time-poor society we live in." You might want to question that middle part, however. Unfortunately, using credit cards online isn't always as secure as it should be, and with so many online transactions happening these days, it's about time that credit card companies start making disposa ble credit card numbers the standard online.

Increasing transactions costs for
e-mail, redux...
10/29/2003 12:10 AM

There's another ro und of disc ussion going on post-FOOCamp about combatting spam by increasing transaction costs for e-mail. I'm not going to get too involved in it, because I've had many of the arguments before - most often with the lovely Cory Doctorow, but in a nutshell, my position is that there are many situations in online life where the effective removal of marginal cost has created problems in handling massive the subsequent massive amounts of abuse that such systems are prone too. I'm not convinced that building in restrictions into e-mail is particularly desirable, but there are lots of other situations where creating artificial scarcity and building-in increasing marginal costs (even if they are only in effort) might have significant positive impacts.

Here's some of the older posts I've written on these subjects:

Introducing System.Transactions in the
Microsoft .NET Framework version 2.0

Introducing System.Transactions in the
Microsoft .NET Framework version 2.0
04/06/2005 09:38 PM
Developers on the Microsoft® Windows® platform traditionally choose between two transactional programming models: explicit transaction management or declarative transaction flow and management. Both these programming models have their disadvantages and neither one is superior to the other in every respect. Version 2.0 of the .NET Framework introduces a new transactional programming model available in the System.Transactions namespace. The new model allows developers to easily write transactional code with the lowest overhead possible while minimizing the amount of hand-crafted code and separating it from the application hosting environment and instance management. This whitepaper starts by stating the problem with the traditional programming models and the motivation for the new model. The whitepaper then presents the new programming model, its features and its capabilities, and some advanced features such as asynchronous work, events, security, concurrency management and interoperability.
