of a focus on algorithmic improvements for spam issues. One resulting
improvement with this index is better handling of expired domains--the
authority for a domain will be reset when a domain expires, even
though dangling links to the expired domain are still out on the web.
We'll be rolling this change in over the next few months starting with
this index. [...] I think you'll see more emphasis at Google on
scalable algorithms rather than responding to individual spam
reports.'' Basically, when you buy a domain that previously expired,
you won't get the PageRank the old domain's owner accrued. Neat
idea....

legitimate emails being filtered away as spam (even the NY Times
caught up on this topic last week). However, in
an amusing twist, Google is suddenly realizing that their IPO-by-email
system may run into problems with spam filters, and are trying to
pre-warn ISPs to whitelist all the emails
they're about to send out concerning the IPO. Of course, this
probably means the next big phishing expedition is going to involve
spoofed Google IPO emails. Perhaps email isn't really the best way to
go about offering such information. Meanwhile, it will be amusing to
see if reports come out that Yahoo or Hotmail just happen to classify
Google IPO emails as spam. Just think of the conspiracy theories.

10/28/2003 11:08 PMSeth Finkelstein has made a startling discovery, backed with lots of
evidence: when a spam result comes up in a search, Google not only
blocks the spam, but every result after it. This means that for
searches where spam results manage to rise to the top, very few --
sometimes zero -- results will be returned. Examples: motorcycle
candle, keyboard bracelet. These are common words for which you'd
expect to see results (in fact, the latter even says there are
thousands of results) but the bug prevents them from being seen.
Eliminating the spam pages (by blocking a word, antenna, that appears
on them) allows full results to be displayed. It's pretty amazing that
such a serious bug made it past Google's tests. It will be interesting
to see how quickly it's fixed....

financial spam is outpacing pharmaceutical spam
- though, honestly, so much of both is coming out that it's really
hard to imagine that this matters at all. Meanwhile, it seems that
porn spam is increasingly less interesting to spammers as the numbers
have been on a noticeable decline for quite some time. No matter
what, though, it appears that CAN-SPAM has done absolutely nothing to
slow down the amount of spam sent.

fact it’s hard to find any fresh stuff past the aisles of
hideous, plasticky milk in cardboard boxes at room temperature, with
