Destineer Studios subsidiary MacSoft on Wednesday released an update to Unreal Tournament 2003, their popular first-person shooter. The patch -- version 2225.1, according to its read me file -- adds a variety of enhancements, including performance improvements. Ryan Gordon, the game's Mac developer, claims that performance improvements of 25 percent or more compared to the retail version are typical, thanks to optimizations, lots of new Altivec (or Velocity Engine) code, and a completely rewritten sound subsystem. Samsung Adds DivX Support via Firmware
Update
07/28/2004 01:20 PM

img_DivX01.jpg imageNow I'm sure you'll correct me if I'm wrong, but do any of the current movie download services offer their wares in DivX format? Because if not, where exactly does Samsung, when detailing its plans to upgrade some of its DVD player firmware to support DivX, intend its customers to get the files that "can be downloaded over high-speed lines in a relatively short time?" Surely not the internet. That would be tantamount to murdering film carpenters' entire families.

That aside, DivX firmware updates for Samsung players from the company itself is plus plus. Now if they'd throw in a little XviD flavor we could stream the movies we've already (legally, for honest) ripped. Update: Oh, hey, look at the image that I put up myself. I'm mostly functional! (Thanks, Antii!)

Also, Happy Birthday, Modbuster!

MS support pledge boosts security

MS support pledge boosts security 06/01/2004 01:54 PM
Microsoft's guarantee that its business products will have a 10-year lifecycle will boost the company's Trustworthy Computing security initiative, according to industry analysts. Users who do not upgrade when product support ends are left with vulnerable PCs, with no means of patching, said Graham Titterington, principal analyst at Ovum. "Any insecure computer on a network is a risk to the whole network," he said. In the past, Microsoft was committed to supporting a product for five years from the day it shipped. Users could then buy extended support to provide security fixes for a further two years.
