About a month ago, Microsoft posted some of its source code to SourceForge. SourceForge is a, if not the, major distribution point for open source software. Microsoft's code was put there under the terms of the Common Public License, which allows modification, addition, redistribution - in short, it allows most of the rights and privileges that we associate with open source software.

View Source for Flash

View Source for Flash 04/08/2005 12:54 AM
Cory Doctorow: Mike from Macromedia sez, "Lawrence Lessig spoke at the FlashForward conference last night in San Francisco. In his talk, title The Cost of Copyright, he stressed to the Flash designers and developers the necessity of a culture of sharing. While the Flash community has actually been a very open community, sharing content and source, the Flash Player does not provide an easy or standard way for Flash content developers to allow viewers to download their source code (Flash files are separate from their source).

"So, I have put together a simple ActionScript library for Flash that allows Flash content creators to easily allow anyone to download the source to their content by right clicking on that content. I have also added a context menu item that allows a distribution license to be specified.

"Finally, in a nod to Mr Lessig, I have released it all under a Creative Commons license." Link

View source added to Flash 04/08/2005 05:48 PM
Earlier this week at the Flash Forward conference (centered around Macromedia's Flash product), Creative Commons Chariman and CEO Lawrence Lessig gave a talk about bringing a culture of sharing to the Flash community like the one that exists for HTML. Every web browser can view source of any HTML document, and millions of online publishers got their start by looking at each others' code, but Flash doesn't directly allow for it. Although flash sharing sites have sprung up to fill the void, there was no easy way to share all your code in Flash.

Macromedia's Mike Chambers answered the call and less than 24 hours later produced an actionscript file that adds a view source option to any flash movie. If you use Macromedia's Flash product and want to share your work with others, by all means give it a try. I hope to see this functionality become an option in upcoming releases of the Flash authoring environment.

News flash: Roller to be OPEN SOURCE! 01/05/2005 04:41 PM
Sun Readies Open Code, Michael Singer: "Other analysts say Sun could also open source its enterprise blogging application, named Roller. While the platform began its life as an open source project, before Sun hired its founder David Johnson, the company has not given the software the full on corporate treatment since he joined."
I don't believe those "other analysts" actually exist, this guy is just talking out of his, uh, never mind. I guess I need to set the record straight. First, Roller is and has always been open source. The version of Roller we use at Sun is the same one that you can download from the Roller project site at Java.Net in either source code or binary form. Second, I'm not interested in the "full on corporate treatment" -- I'm a married man.

A Look at Some Windows Source Code

A Look at Some Windows Source Code 02/13/2004 01:12 PM
Today Microsoft admitted that "portions of the Microsoft Windows 2000 and Windows NT 4.0 source code were illegally made available on the Internet." Through unnamed sources, we here at Blogzilla were provided with a portion: if (default_browser() != IE60) {  dump_mozilla();  set_invalid_host("www.mozilla.org", ALWAYS);  install_ie60();  download_latest_patch(IE60);  apply_security_patch(KB828028);  apply_security_patch(KB832894);  ...  apply_security_patch(KB824145);  apply_security_patch(KB813951);...

Office Source Code

Office Source Code 09/21/2004 01:11 AM
I’ve been trying to think of something intelligent and new to say about Microsoft’s recent Office source code maneuver, but Simon Phipps took care of it. Anyhow, when it comes to Office software, I’m less interested in its code (source or object) which should be disposable and replaceable, than I am in its output. Some call them “office documents”; I prefer “intellectual heritage”, “racial memory”, “crystallized thought”, “priceless treasure”, that kind of thing. They need to be taken care of better than they are, I think, and others agree.

What is the true value of source code?

What is the true value of source code? 07/14/2004 11:42 AM
In my last article here on ITMJ, I challenged traditional notions of the importance of source code access in open source. Most point to source code availability as the premier benefit open source delivers, without offering any substantive reasons to support the claim. As I noted, while open access to source code may matter for some, its benefits pale in comparison to the benefits associated with open source distribution. In summary, open source business models yield dramatically lower sales, marketing, and product distribution costs, enabling upstart competitors to undercut established vendors on price while providing their customers Porsche technology at Pinto pricing.

Top 10 Open Source Tools For E-Activism.

Good article today listing the "Top 10 Open Source Tools for eActivism". Some of these I hadn't even heard of before (like ActionApps, completely new to me).

Open source tools are a natural fit for e-activism, since they are born of the same bootstrap, grassroots mentality as a good e-activist campaign. Plus, they're free :-) Or at least cheap -- and often far better in quality than their commercial counterparts. [Seen on Many-to-Many]
