Jim Griffin on radio show "Politics of
culture" Tuesday
12/23/2003 12:27 AM

Pho list co-founder Jim Griffin moderates a live discussion on copyright, digital entertainment, and the future of online music tomorrow (Tuesday 23 December) at 2.30 p.m. on 89.9 FM Santa Monica, simulcast on KCRW.com.

I'll be moderating, if you can call it that, a panel discussion involving Matt Oppenheim of the RIAA, Sarah Deutsch of Verizon, Ted Cohen of EMI and Fred von Lohmann of the EFF. That's a mouthful of acronyms, to be sure, but one chock full 'o first-hand experience from the front lines of this year's marquee battle over copyright enforcement.

In recent news - openDemocracy.net has announced that it is releasing around 150 of its existing articles under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives license and will also be incorporating the option of Creative Commons licensing for all future contributors.

openDemocracy is an online magazine that provides a forum in which global issues relating to politics and culture are debated, many of which do not receive sufficient or sufficiently careful attention by the mainstream media. A brief review of openDemocracy's au thor pages shows that recent authors have included Kofi Annan, Timothy Garton Ash, Janis Ian, Iris Marion Young, Salman Rushdie, George Soros, Richard Stallman and Gillian Slovo.

It is great to have such a high caliber publication committed to the principles of spreading ideas around the globe and adopting a Creative Commons to fulfill that objective. You can read more about their decision to switch and why Salman Rushdie said no to a Creative Commons license in our recent Featured Commoner segment.

Mark Frauenfelder: In recent months, Künstler Treu has been hosting a one-hour remix show for a south german radio station. As he puts it, "it's unusal music from all over the world mixed in various layers using cubase." I love it. Link to 50MB MP3 file

Theory of Everything radio show

Theory of Everything radio show 04/06/2005 05:27 PM
Mark Frauenfelder: For the last couple of months, I've been listening to a terrific new radio program, called The Theory of Everything, produced and hosted by Benjamen Walker. It plays every week on selected radio stations, but Benjamen has thoughtfully provided a complete archive of the shows in MP3 format on his site. Some of the programs have been about the CIA funding the absract expressionist movement, hopeless infatuation, people who obsess over becoming a celebrity, and a skinhead funeral.

If The Theory of Everything sounds similar to another one of my favorite radio programs, This American Life, well, it is -- but it's a little quirkier and appeals to my interests even more, and I really like the sound of Benjamen's voice. Load up your MP3 player and enjoy. Link

BBC radio show: Thinking Allowed

BBC radio show: Thinking Allowed 04/13/2005 03:19 PM
Mark Frauenfelder: Will Partain recommended that we check out a BBC radio program called "Thinking Allowed." He calls it "BBC Radio 4's longstanding answer to Boing Boing."

The most recent show looks into the histories of quueing and smoking. Previous programs have covered management of risk in everyday life, single women, gypsies, Space Invaders, charismatic cults, plastination, Carnival and crime, zoos, and serendipity.

(Sadly, it appears that the programs are available only in the incredibly irritating RealPlayer format. Why not MP3 and Bittorent? I would love to start up a fund to buy Real Networks and put them out of their misery.) Link< /a>

Recently, Doc Searls suggested that a use for internet radio could be to broadcast news-like talk shows, generated from posts on blogs. Kind of like All Things Considered, with listeners from your blogroll. Then Mitch pointed out that he's got some of the resources required to make this happen, and is looking for energy. I've some energy to spare, so I've transcribed an evening of thoughts here.
