Aqua FM Swim Snorkel Radio 06/03/2004 03:11 PM

snaquafm.jpg imageAlthough it won't do you much good once you get under enough water to soak up all the radio waves, the Aqua FM Swim Snorkel will let you surface surfers listen to FM radio while you float, making it easier to ignore God's beautiful undersea creation. Even better, the Aqua FM snorkel uses no earphones, and instead uses bone conduction to pass the audio signal through your teeth right into your dome. And if you want to test the range of FM underwater, feel free; the radio snorkel is waterproof to 33 feet.

Aqua Talk Flex Plastype Cellphone Case

Aqua Talk Flex Plastype Cellphone Case 06/24/2005 04:03 PM

plastype-phone.jpgWhile it might be some's natural inclination to toss this off as a goofy product, I think there's something to a waterproof bag that protects your cellphone from moisture. The 'Aqua Talk Flex Plastype' soft case is a nylon and polyethylene bag from a manufacturer who normally makes cover slips for storing futons (possibly a much more prestigious role in Japan, we don't know).

Sure, you could just toss it in a Ziploc, but this looks sort of nice and is only $4 or so. Perhaps it will even be available outside of Japan, or wherever else futons are sold.

300 Images From 1800 Sites: This guy went icon shopping at major sites. If you want to know what people are using for a "printer friendly" icon, here's your site.

I roughly estimate that for every six web sites I scoured, I was able to acquire one graphic image. I visited only Fortune 1000 company sites, major online retailers, well known blogs, top advertising, publishing, and design agencies, technology and software industry leaders, and the very largest online news publishers. Approximately 1800 web sites later, I have this collection of 300 of the most interesting, unique, and beautiful formations of pixels to display.

Icon Choice

Icon Choice 04/03/2005 09:32 PM

I was doing a little development tonight, and I needed to check from email integration. I downloaded and installed a freeware SMTP server, and this is the icon that greeted me on my desktop:

Yes, that's a hand grenade behind an envelope, perhaps the least confidence-inspiring icon choice ever. Who thinks these things up? Can anyone else think of a worse choice for an icon?

in labyrinths of coral caves

in labyrinths of coral caves 09/13/2004 04:20 PM
I know that it's risky to be totally honest, because some people view that as weakness, and attack. But the unexamined life is not worth living, right? If I'm not totally honest with myself, how will I ever learn and grow? Should I stop examining my life now, because I wrote a book about it?

Well, right now I need to examine my life, and I need to be totally honest with myself. I have to own up to something: I *did* hope that my book would get noticed by the Industry. I hoped that it would get noticed by critics, and I hoped that The Media would pay attention . . . but all that happened after it was published. When I wrote it, I hoped that my story would be amusing, interesting, and maybe even inspiring to people.

And you know what? That's exactly what Real People tell me when they read my book: they were amused, interested, and occasionaly inspired.

What a myopic fucking fool I've been! What a stupid, stupid jerkass! I was so worried about impressing The Cool Kids, I forgot who I am, and why I do this. And even worse, I disrespected -- even if unintentionally -- the very people who have been with me on The Journey all along. It's not some stupid magazine that owes *me* an apology; it's *me* who owes all those Real People an apology.

Open Akamaization with Coral

Open Akamaization with Coral 04/19/2005 12:29 PM
Last week I wondered about the emergence of a grassro ots grid. The other day Brady Joslin pointed me to Coral, a "peer-to-peer content distribution network comprised of a world-wide network of web proxies and nameservers." It's simple to use. Just append nyud.net:8090 to the domain name of any URL. So for example in the meme tracking script I wrote about last week, Brady altered this:
var deliciousUrl = 'http://del.icio.us/url/?url=' + currentPage;
to this:
var deliciousUrl = 'http://del.icio.us.nyud.net:8090/url/?url=' +
currentPage;
The results are usually slower to come back, but as Brady points out, the asynchronicity of XmlHttpRequest can deal with that. ...
