Mail Fixed 06/06/2005 12:15 AM

A problem with the site emailing users passwords was recently fixed. If you registered for an account and did not receive a password in the mail then use the "Request new password" link on the right left to request the email again. Sorry for the inconvenience, but no one bothered to say it wasn't working so it sat broken until I noticed the logs had some failures.

Japanese FeedDemon bug fixed

Japanese FeedDemon bug fixed 05/29/2004 08:17 AM

Among the bugs on my "must fix" list before releasing FeedDemon 1.10 is the one described here, in which FeedDemon shows garbage in the status bar when running on the Japanese version of Windows.

Well, I'm happy to report that after much hair-pulling, I've finally found the cause of this UI bug and fixed it [screenshot].

This was the last high priority bug on my list, so if all goes well FeedDemon 1.10 will be released on Monday.

Dave Hyatt reports: Maciej fixed the infamous cookie bug last night, so PHP-Nuke sites will now work properly. Quoting Maciej... I have a fix for the infamous PHP-Nuke login bug. It should be in the next release. Here's the short version: the Netscape cookie spec says when a cookie comes from a URL like "http://www.foo.com/user.php" and no path is explicitly specified, then the path should default to "/user.php". However, it actually needs to default to "/", because that's what all real browsers do. Don't you love the web? (from Surfin' Safari)

Tiger Mail screenshot and user interface

Tiger Mail screenshot and user interface 03/30/2005 05:35 PM
I find the screenshot of Mail for OS X 10.4 fascinating.

The first thing I notice is that the mailboxes aren’t in a drawer anymore, which I think is a good thing.

A few other things:

1. The toolbar background appears to be some sort of gradient. As in a metal window, there is no line between the top of the window and the toolbar buttons. But it’s not metal. It looks new. (The screenshot of system preferences has the same look.)

2. The toolbar icons appear to be embedded in some kind of new button. Whether it’s a new button style or just a look for the Mail toolbar icons I can’t tell from the screenshot.

3. The mailbox list has a background color. This may or may not be customizable—you can’t tell from the screenshot. It’s a good guess that, if customizable, the color shown is the default color. This is interesting because I can’t think of any other source lists from Apple that have colored backgrounds by default.

4. The vertical splitview dividing the mailboxes from the rest of the window is not a standard splitview. (Unless it’s new in OS X 10.4.) (Actually, I’m just assuming it’s a splitview.) Note how the apparent thickness of the divider is zero. The horizontal splitview looks more like a standard splitview—though I’ve squinted at it a bit and started to wonder if that’s true.

5. I don’t see a status bar. (It could be that, like Safari, the status bar is hidden by default. Or it could be that it was added after this screenshot was taken. Or maybe there just isn’t one. I don’t know.)

So... what do you think?

(Note: remember to respect any and all non-disclosure agreements. We’re just looking at public screenshots. And these screenshots may or may not resemble the final, shipping versions.)

Music Labels Focus On Ringtones

Music Labels Focus On Ringtones 08/18/2004 05:22 AM
It appears that the music labels, rather than actually looking to figure out how they're going to deal with this digital music issue, are, instead, simply walking naively into the next mess. Since they haven't quite figured out really how to make downloadable music work yet (though, they keep hoping they have) they're turning to the new revenue source they never expected: ringtones. They've suddenly noticed that kids are paying $2.50 for a fragment of a song they won't pay a $1 to download completely, which leads to things like Warner Brothers actually advertising ringtones rather than the regular music itself. WB is now specifically advertising ringtones from the next Green Day album, including the lovely one with a member of the band saying: "It's your mother. I know. She's with me." It's no surprise that the labels are focusing on this market, given the basic economics, but they seem to be doing so under the assumption that they won't face the same problem they faced with file sharing. In fact, with the release of things like Xingtone, the labels are going to have increasing difficulty holding onto this market. But rather than figuring out ways to deal with it, they're just jumping on a bandwagon while it's hot. It's a short term strategy from the ultimate short-term thinkers.
