Nielsen watch 2003

Nielsen watch 2003 12/22/2003 10:11 PM

Jakob Nielsen's Top Ten Web Design Mistakes of 2003 make interesting reading this year, covering topics including undated content, incomprehensible thumbnails and overly specific forms. In previous years Jakob's complaints tended to center around far more obvious problems such as horizontal scroll bars and fixed size fonts. Either the field of web usability has matured to the point where the common issues are less glaringly obvious or Jakob is running out of low-hanging fruit.

wjdcm19l.jpg imageWIRELESS WATCH 2004 is going on in Japan until Friday, and there are plenty of new product demonstrations as well as those currently in development on display. This year's hot sheet includes NTT DoCoMo's "UbiButton," a device similar in form factor to a wristwatch. By detecting the shock waves in the arm created by a simple snapping of the fingers, a switch is flipped that can, for example, turn a light on and off. In other words, DoCoMo has glorified The Clapper to now be called The Snapper. Actually, I know a couple people that can't snap their fingers...what the hell are they supposed to do? [Uhm, clap? - ed] Other highlights from the convention included a working model of a Bluetooth pen, and DDI Pocket's "Jacketphone," a SD card sized PHS module. TechJapan has full Day 1 coverage, with pretty pictures.

Design critique of Jakob Nielsen

Design critique of Jakob Nielsen 05/24/2004 02:56 AM
Jakob Nielsen is a legendary usability crank who writes great little columns called "AlertBoxes" wherein he runs down his best practices for one or another element of usability (I always forget to read these because I can't find any RSS or Atom for Jakob's site and it updates too infrequently to put it in my regular Moz tab-group bookmark; nevertheless, some of Nielsen's pieces, like the Microcontent thing from 1998 have been very influential in my blogging style)

Last week's AlertBox was about link-style, and it's pretty good and sensible. But, like all of the AlertBoxen, it is ugly as hell.

Enter "Design Eye for the Usability Guy." Five designers, who have clearly been scorched by Nielsen's legendary rants about the primacy of usability over design, take on Nielsen's AlertBox house-style in a kind of overblown, gushy tone, and undertake to remodel Jakob's image so that his site is both usable and beautiful. It's funny, subversive and in the words of the Cos, "you may learn seomthing before it's done. Hey! Hey! Hey!"

Last time I checked it wasn't illegal to use illustrations to spice up your web site. Now, before we go wild let us remember that Nielsen's not exactly the nothing-but-prada-shoes type of guy. So, I settled with a clean, icon-like style that will reinforce each guideline visually. The colours used are basic: red for links, blue for hover and shades of gray and black for other text. Again, let's try to stick with a style that somehow matches his current branding.

To translate the general concept of links into something simple I've chosen to use an underlined letter "a," applied to an assortment of situations that exemplify each guideline. The font used is Georgia, which happens to work nicely and is very much ubiquitous.

iMovie underfire

iMovie underfire 03/13/2003 10:21 AM
Last week, Neil McIntosh wrote a glowing review of iMovie 3 for Guardian Online. Since the article’s publication, a number of people responded to McIntosh claiming that iMovie was riddled with bugs and was undeserving of the praise he had heaped upon it. As a result, McIntosh’s latest article does some serious back-tracking - “iMovie 3 appears to be filled with bugs of the worst kind. They are critical.. spread the word that, in its current state, this piece of software simply is not worth the CD-ROM it has been burnt on. “. Compare this to some of the remarks McIntosh made last week in ‘Live the iLife’ : “It's amazing technology, at an amazing price...Cheap, simple video editing software, and now a cheap, simple means of distribution: it all adds up to something that's well worth making a fuss about.” I haven’t used iMovie 3 yet so I can’t comment on the validity of McIntosh’s remarks, but it’s worrying that the level of reponse he received compelled him to completely reverse his opinions.

FileVault + iMovie = Trouble

FileVault + iMovie = Trouble 02/10/2004 02:56 AM
I was trying to import some video I shot at the beach into iMovie and it just wouldn’t go; the picture would lurch and stutter and then the import would just halt, no diagnostics. I was puzzled because I used to import all the time on my much-slower previous PowerBook. Then I remembered that I’d turned on FileVault, i.e. everything in my home directory is encrypted. I wouldn’t be surprised if soaking up data at FireWire rates, plus encrypting it, might be a bit much; so I logged into another—unencrypted—account on this computer and it imported fine. So I may be jumping to conclusions, but this looks like a bad combination.
