copyleftcommie.gif If I had the time, and the money, I'd do the deep analysis that it would take to explain to myself why it is I constantly hope to be surprised by Mr. Gates. Yet I never am. Here's BoingBoing reporting the red-baiting of Mr. Gates. It's one thing to read this sort of thing from a studio exec, or head of a record label -- surrounded as they are by the sort that surround them. But the people I've met at Microsoft are miles beyond this sort of silliness. Does Mr. Gates not even talk to them?

I'm really disappointed in Google. This new Site Flavored Search that some folks are talking about is really kind of disappointing. Why? Simple. In order to add it on my site, I have to fill out a survey to help Google understand what sort of content my site contains. Well, that's not quite true. I'm just selecting from a list of categories that will be included as a hidden form field in the HTML used to submit the search request...

So there's a view about the file-sharing debate held by most people who don't know anything about the debate. It is a view the recording industry likes most people to hold. It is a view far from anything anyone interesting is saying. The view - call it the uninformed stereotype (US) view - goes something like this: that there are just two sides to this debate, those who favor "piracy" and those who don't. Supporters of Grokster are people who favor piracy, and who are against artists. On Thursday, at the NYPL, I had the extraordinarily pleasure of being on stage with Jeff Tweedy and Steven Johnson, for a discussion titled "Who Owns Culture?" The evening started with 15 minutes of me and my "powerpoint" (actually, Keynote), and then a 50 minute discussion with Tweedy and me, moderated by Johnson. There was then time for questions from the audience. It was an extraordinary evening. I had the chance before to talk to Tweedy, so I wasn't surprised. But he was extraordinary — funny, subtle, smart about the issues, and deeply passionate. Suffice it that neither he nor I (as is obvious to anyone on this page) subscribe to, or fit, within the US view. I explicitly denounced "piracy"; Tweedy -- in context -- said nothing to support the view that people should infringe the rights of other artists. David Carr of the New York Times was at the event. He wrote a review. Everyone I've spoken to loved the piece. I think they loved it because it was a piece printed in the Times, and we're a culture that loves attention more than accuracy. The review is filled with quotes from Tweedy, taken out of context, to support the US view. Nothing in the article suggests anything was said at all contrary to the US view. One reading the piece would think, there they go again, those supporters of theft, and haters of artists. I'm not sure why there needs to be a NYTimes, if its role is simply to reinforce what people already think, especially with pieces like this. God forbid the Nation's paper of record should reflect something more subtle or complex than the crudest view of an important debate.

McD's Music Giveaway Disappointment 08/04/2004 09:40 AM

I rarely eat at McDonalds, but while on vacation last week our kids talked us into it as we drove across western Nebraska. My wife ordered a Big Mac, and unbeknownst to me, they had a Sony Connect promo going on where you get a free music download with every Big Mac. Cool!

Then I tried downloading it.

We're sorry.

We know you are interested in using the Connect music store. Unfortunately SonicStage only works on Windows 98SE and above.

We have no immediate plans to support other operating systems at this time. However, we believe this is an important user base and we hope to support it in the future.

Thank you for your interest.

(Funny; I always thought that even Mac OS 9 was a few steps "above" Windows 98.)

So the short of it is that the whole Connect system is dependent on software that needs to be downloaded first. While this really isn't that unusual — even Apple's IMS works only with iTunes — Sony's free SonicStage digital music software is Click here to comment on this entry

Sony HandyCam DCR-DVD301

Sony HandyCam DCR-DVD301 09/08/2004 07:22 AM

sony_inch.jpg imageDespite the ever-present push towards "smaller," there's nothing small about Sony's new "DCR-DVD301" DVD Handycam's screen. At first glance, it appears to be a standard DVD Handycam - same 1.4GB 8cm DVD writing, and more or less the same specifications - but when you look twice, you realize this new unit is equipped with a 3.5" LCD. Indeed, Sony has added a full inch in at least one area, which is more than anyone can ask, really.

"With great LCD screens comes great price," my uncle once said, and apparently he was right on target: you'll pay nearly $1,100 for this camera, presuming it gets released in America for a similar price as the Japanese market.

sony_pc350.jpg imageSony's new DCR-PC350 MiniDV Handycam jams a 3.31-megapixel CCD into a compact shell that weighs less than a pound. Each unit comes with a Handycam Station, a charging dock that connects to a TV or PC via S-Video, USB, or FireWire (i.LINK), to copy over data or display images or video straight from the camera. A 2.5-inch touchscreen LCD augments the rest of the controls, and a Memory Stick PRO Duo slot allows for a quick toss-in of additional storage (just for photos, not video, I would think). Small, light, and high-quality -- no complaints here (although I wouldn't mind a hard drive inside, too, if I'm free to wish).

Should be available in September for $1,300, "just in time for the holidays." I had no idea Sony was so concerned about Rosh Hashanah. CyberShabot Shalom!

New Sony Cybershots, HP Photosmarts,
Including Sony T3 (Rawr!)

Sony_DSC-T3.jpg imageGott im Himmel, ze cameras! There have been like two dozen new cameras announced in the last few weeks as various manufacturers start ramping up for Christmas, and Sony and HP are no exception. Among the new Sonys announced today are two pocket-sized beauties that I want right now: the T3, an update to the T1 and Japan-only T11, a 5.1-megapixel camera that is Sony's thinnest at less than three-quarters of an inch; and the DSC-L1, a candy bar 4.1-megapixel unit that is only 3.75-inches long. Just when I was ready to buy a new camera Sony has to muck it all up with at least two that really do it for me. Oh, and there's also the new DSC-V3, a 7-megapixel unit that looks mighty fine, as well.

The HPs, well, they are okay, but I'll be honest, they don't get me all riled up as much as the two featherweight cameras from Sony do. If they fixed the middling image quality of the T1 in the T3, that may be my next sidearm. Living Room has a bunch of the press releases, and I'll add to this post if any more info comes through during the day.

While Sony Tries To Become Apple,
Samsung Tries To Become Sony
05/13/2004 03:41 AM
Has anyone noticed that it's becoming increasingly difficult to tell Samsung from Sony? It appears that almost everything Sony does, Samsung does as well. So, it's really no surprise that a little over a month after Sony announced plans to build out retail stores more for advertising than for sales, Samsung plans to do the same thing. Of course, while Sony says they're more interested in using the stores for advertising, Samsung has gone one step further. They believe so strongly that this "store" is just for advertising that they won't sell you anything at the store. It's for showcasing products only. Also, a random note in the article, but the same week that Sony and Nintendo announced their plans for their next generation handheld gaming devices, this article also mentions that Samsung is planning for its own N-Gage like phone/gaming device. Apparently, the dismal failure of the N-Gage isn't enough to scare them off.

I think it was in the middle of the Darkstalkers game that I realized that all my worries about battery life, size, and durability were sort of moot, because I want to play portable games that look like that right now. I'm not ready to call it the next portable platform winner, but if they can eke more than the rumored 2-3 hours of play time out of that battery they've got a very good shot at stealing the majority market from Nintendo.

Sony HMP-A1 VAIO Video Pocket Review

Sony HMP-A1 VAIO Video Pocket Review 07/12/2004 10:34 AM

hmpa1_review.jpg imageI should warn you: I'm sort of lukewarm on portable video players altogether. I don't commute to work, and when I did, there was enough jostling and train swapping to make anything that required focused attention, like reading books or watching video, a fractured and annoying experience. But still, there is an opportunity for a video player like the HMP-A1 to be useful -- I just don't think this would be the one I would buy.

Another Hard Disk Sony Video Player?

Another Hard Disk Sony Video Player? 08/02/2004 10:25 AM

nextsonyhdd1.jpg imageSo there's stink about this one possibly being a fake, but there's a new Sony hard disk-based video player on Japanese website CD Report that claims to have a 20GB hard drive crammed into a unit just a hair bigger than the iPod mini (hence, the fake rumors). If it is legit, it is supposed to be released sometime around Christmas for a price in the neighborhood of $450 - not a bad price if it ends up being the real deal.

Of course, Sony learned from the HMP-A1 that people might actually like players that could support native MP3 playback, so the new unit is rumored to have only ATRAC support (that means, basically, that this thing will be a dud as a music player).
