Frank Rich: Mel Gibson Forgives Us for His Sins. The vilification of Jews by Mr. Gibson, his film and some of his allies, unchallenged by his media enablers, is not happening in a vacuum. We are in the midst of an escalating election-year culture war in which those of "faith" are demonizing so-called "secularists" (for which read any Jews critical of Mr. Gibson and their fellow travelers, liberals). Politicians, we are learning, seem increasingly eager to wrap themselves in "The Passion of the Christ" as a handy signal to indicate they are opposed to all those "secularists" whose conspiracy is undermining all that right-thinking Americans hold near and dear.

Heading Home Soon

Heading Home Soon 12/19/2003 11:56 AM
In a few days I'll begin what's become an annual ritual since I moved to California almost exactly 4 years ago: going home for the holidays. Just writing this now, I'm wondering if the day will ever come that I don't consider Toledo, Ohio to be "home" instead of where I'm currently living. Do I have to spend more time away than the 25ish years that I lived there? Or maybe I just need to "settle down and get married"?...

Babyface: A Times Square Odyssey "This interactive web piece about the Babyfaces of Times Square takes place in the past, when the center city was a clash of classes rather than today's funeral of a theme park controlled by middle class undertakers." This is definitely not safe for work (drugs, porn, men in bathroom stalls), but if you want to remember the seedier side of NYC, this is one way to do it.

I'll be at SXSW this year after an absence of a couple years. My goals this year are to not get food poisoning and to be fully present at both the panels I'm participating in (I was slated to do a keynote but got bumped by Gladwell...whaddya gonna do?):

If you're at the conference, amble up and say hi...but be warned that I might ask you for money (not really, I'm just kidding [sadly, he's not just kidding, but was about the Gladwell thing -ed]).

Heading to PC Forum

Heading to PC Forum 04/09/2004 04:12 PM

Next stop in the Technorati speaking tour: PC Forum.

I'll be presenting the company on Monday afternoon - a real honor (go to the bottom of the page). We've got some fun new stuff to show off, and I'm tremendously excited to meet the stellar list of attendees Esther and Daphne always bring in. The big news this year is that that CNET has acquired Edventure Holdings, the company that puts on PC Forum - kudos to Esther, Daphne, Christina, and the team, and my hat goes off to Shelby and the folks at CNET - smart move! (Full disclosure: Esther Dyson is an investor in Technorati)

Golf, anyone?

I'll be heading out to Scottsdale this afternoon, so drop me a line at dsifry at technorati dot com if you are going to be in Scottsdale and are interested in hooking up for a late dinner tonight or golf Sunday morning. I'm not a great golfer, but I'm not a complete duffer - so anyone who enjoys a nice walk on a big manicured lawn along with some interesting conversation, send an email or leave a message at my room at the hotel.

Heading South

Heading South 01/03/2004 05:52 PM

Flying towards the
sun

When we decided to move to Finland one of the agreed upon features was that each year, budget permitting, we would take a Winter holiday somewhere the sun makes more of an appearance than glow occasionally on the horizon on the rare day that it's not cloudy. People always ask about the cold but the cold isn't the hard part of living in Scandinavia in the Winter, it's the darkness. November was a really hard month as the darkness really settles into your brain.

It's that time of year to go on holiday and I'm looking forward to reacting like a Sleestack to the evil, unfamiliar daystar and getting to know the cocktail boy poolside for a luxurious 7 days in Madeira. I'm going to also enjoy 7 days of internet-free living while hiking and taking pictures. It may be hard getting on the plane for the return trip. :)

I'll be driving down there, towing my glider and all my flying gear. I'm going to fly Friday and Saturday at Great Western Soaring (their web site is pretty bad, but it's a great place to fly, I'm told), based at Crystal airport. The terrain in the area...

LeapPads heading to Afghanistan

LeapPads heading to Afghanistan 08/04/2004 03:24 PM
The Department of Health and Human Services is shipping 20,000 Leap Pad Learning Systems to women in Afghanistan. While LeapPad is marketed here as en edutainment system for children, this version was modified for adults who speak Dari and Pashto but aren't necessarily able to read. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the systems will be used to inform the women about healthcare issues like diet, immunization, pregnancy, and disease prevention in, er, unique ways:
For example, said LeapFrog Chief Executive Officer Tom Kalinske, reproduction is a culturally and religiously sensitive topic in the country. The solution: a page of text and a page of pictures with the analogy of growing carrots. Growing them too close together produces skinny and not-well- formed carrots that do not look good to eat, but if you space the carrots, they're plump and appetizing -- the lesson being it's better to space children rather than having them in rapid succession.

Heading Down To The VoIP Store

Heading Down To The VoIP Store 06/22/2004 06:02 AM
Want to know just how popular voice-over-internet systems are becoming? A company that sells VoIP equipment is now opening the first ever VoIP retail store in the US. People will be able to go in and shop for their very own VoIP phone. While it may work as a promotional gimmick, you have to wonder if this really makes sense. The average users still doesn't fully understand the difference between a regular phone and a VoIP phone. Are they really going to want to go to a separate store to understand what they're looking for in a VoIP phone? Instead, this seems like it's more suited for a general purpose electronics or department store where someone might actually go looking for a phone, and then become intrigued by the VoIP offerings.

Spam bill heading to U.S. president 12/09/2003 10:50 AM
The U.S. House of Representatives has approved an amended version of a bill that will allow penalties of up to $6 million and five years in jail for sending some e-mail spam, the last step before the bill can be signed into law by President George W. Bush. The House, by unanimous consent, approved an amended version of the Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography and Marketing (CAN-SPAM) Act of 2003, which had been bouncing between the House and Senate as both houses of Congress made changes to it. Passage of the bill by the House late Monday, following the Senate's approval of it on Nov. 25, sends the bill to President Bush for his signature.

Roller planning done, now I'm heading
home...
04/13/2005 10:40 PM

I've had a very productive week so far in MPK and I'm heading home early tomorrow. Working with new blogs.sun.com developer Allen Gilliland, I wrapped up first drafts of requirements and design for group blogging in Roller (check the wiki if you want the details). Allen and I also spent a lot of time discussing possible "supportablity" enhancements like configuration consolidation and load balancing. I posted some notes from these discussions to the Roller dev list for feedback. The posts spurred a flurry of comments and discussion that touched on topics of search (Matt R and Matt S want to fix it) and ditching container managed authentication (Matt R is interested in moving to Acegi).

I haven't been nearly so productive on the book. Before I left N.C. I picked up the same cold that hit rest of my family, so I've been sleeping instead of writing. So it goes.

Nice thing is, I was able to spend a little time with some of my other co-workers. Roller committer Anil Gangolli (more of a friend than a co-worker I guess) kindly invited me over for dinner with his wife and some friends on Sunday and we had some great indian food and conversation (Thanks Anil!). And today, I was fortunate enough to run into Tim Bray and Claire Giordano as I was wandering around looking for an empty table in the Sun cafeteria.

I'm coming back out here on the 26th for the chairman's award deal. Hopefully I'll feel better then.

I’m of the opinion that the economy/fundamentals have peaked for now and we're headed lower, hard to say if it will be muted or something more pronounced; at the margin I think it will be relatively muted. Overall market valuation looks to me to be on the high side of "OK". Going forward, I think deep cyclicals like steel will continue to perform well (in particular I love the Australian giant, BHP) but some sectors are already fading, such as retail.
