Repeat after me: there is no black iPod
Repeat after me: there is no black iPod
11/12/2003 04:31 PMBack in April, when the new iPods came out, a photo circulated of what
looked like a black iPod, but which turned out to actually be a
regular white iPod that had been backlit to show off its illuminated
buttons. Somehow completely missing all this and failing to even do
the most cursory factcheck to determine whether these actually exist
or not, Gotham magazine just wrote up a piece touting Apple's "SLEEK
NEW BLACK MODEL" iPod for their Novemeber issue. Read...

Condemned To Repeat The Past?
Condemned To Repeat The Past?
04/13/2005 06:17 AMLast week, I mentioned one of the
lessons
learned from Andy Kessler's newest book,
How We Got Here: A Slightly Irreverent History of Technology and
Markets. I've just finished reading it, and just in time, as
well, since you can now check it out for free. While the hard copy
version doesn't come out until June, Kessler is releasing the book for
free download off his
site in e-book form. If you read his previous book,
Running Money, you might even recognize a few short
passages in the new book. In
Running Money, Kessler goes
through his own experience figuring out the mental model that guided
his investment philosophy in technology -- and part of that included a
brief history lesson in the start of the industrial revolution. HWGH
is basically an extended version of that history lesson, written in
the same light tone -- designed to be the basic, quick history manual
that anyone in the tech world (in just about any capacity, from
engineer to business to investing) should read. Indeed, we're already
seeing startups and companies making business decisions that seem like
they're following the same bad footsteps companies took only five
years ago. Is it any surprise that some are repeating the mistakes of
200 years ago as well? One of the worst things in the tech and
business world these days is that many people can't view trends out
past a quarter (or they simply extract one single trend, without
recognizing how others impact them). Any intelligent business person
needs to recognize how trends play out in the long term, and how they
interact with each other. HWGH gives you plenty of trends from the
past few
centuries to help guide you into that longer term
thinking.

Brave New Gamer World
“ ‘We've got an entire group
of people under age 30 who grew up playing video games,’ said
Jim Gee, professor in the UW-Madison School of Education. ‘It's
completely changing the way people think about education and the
workplace.’
This ‘gamer generation’ includes
some 90 million people in the U.S. alone, ages 15 to 35. In fact,
sales of video games have now surpassed sales of TVs, DVDs and
CDs
.
A host of new data is suggesting that video games
have created a new generation of employees and executives, bigger than
the baby boomers, who will dramatically transform the
workplace.
Researchers like John C. Beck and Mitchell Wade,
authors of the book ‘Got Game: How the Gamer Generation is
Reshaping Business Forever’ argue that managers who understand
and harness this generation's distinct attributes will leap far ahead
of the competition.
Beck and Wade say these 90 million rising
professionals, through sheer numbers, will inevitably dominate
business and are already changing the rules. Although many of the
changes are positive, such as more open communication and creative
problem solving, they have caused a generation gap that frustrates
gamers and the boomers who manage them
