PD840_hi.jpg imageApex has added a nice looking 8.4-inch widescreen DVD player to their lineup, called the PD-840. It plays DVDs, music, all that good stuff, with a projected battery life of 2.5 hours -- not long enough for two movies, but probably just long enough for one. Although portable DVD players are the sort of product that has very limited appeal to me -- if I'm not watching them at home, they I'll probably be watching on a laptop -- I know some people, especially people with kids, get a lot of mileage out of them. My own family has chewed through at least two in the last couple of years keeping my young brother entertained.

Should be available late summer for around for (a too pricey) $325.

Chairman
01/05/2005 03:32 AM
Last week, we noted (with surprise) the story that Apex Digital's chairman had been arreste d in China for failing to pay millions of dollars to certain vendors. Well, now, Apex has responded to the claims, suggesting that this is all part of their vendors' attem pt to change the terms of their agreements, and, in fact, that they've forced the imprisoned chairman to sign certain documents unfavorable to the company. As for the supposedly missing money, Apex says they've sent the checks regularly, but the company in question, Sichuan Changhong Electric, has never presented them to Apex's bank to cash.

Apex Digital Chairman Arrested In China
For Fraud
12/30/2004 04:39 PM
Earlier this year, we had a story noting that Apex Digital, known mainly as a distributor of insanely cheap Chinese-made consumer electronics, was doing amazingly well, and planning to move into the computer business as well. It appears, however, that the "amazingly well" part of the equation was helped along by, you know, not actually paying their vendors. Apex's chairman has now been arrested in China on fraud charges, following the news that many companies believe Apex owes them millions of dollars. And you wondered why those DVD players were so cheap?

Companies like Apex Digital are some of my favorites to watch. Stuck for years as a huge retail producers but second-rate players in the electronics market, these companies start to do interesting things when they make their move toward legitimacy. Apex's first major move, the ApeXtreme home gaming console, is destined for failure -- with the possible exception of a healthy adoption by the PVR tweaking scene. But hold the Apex-branded phone! Here comes a Portable Media Player, the Apex MP-2000, a $400 device with a 20GB hard drive and 3.5-inch 320 by 260 screen that can play MPEG-4, DivX, Motion JPEG, and Windows Media 9 video. Plus it can encode video on the fly at VGA quality -- up to 40 hours in MPEG-4 and 80 hours in WMV9. Plus, for better or for worse, the unit can be upgraded to support future DRM schemes, meaning that any future media format should be playable. Apex might just pull something off after all.

As far as we know, these are the first pictures on the web of the Apex MP-2000, and since sharing is caring, we've provided a high-resolution version, as well (click the picture).

That's Entertainment

That's Entertainment 10/28/2003 11:09 PM
I got dragged away from my entertaining computer to be entertained by a set of entertainers across town last night. We had a general idea what to expect, but didn't really understand what was waiting for us on stage: a comedian, a guitarist, and a musical genius named Andy. It doesn't take much to capture my attention, but (generally speaking) I pay immediate heed to Stand-Up routines. Blaine Capatch was nearing the end of his set, playing with dorky little puppets and trying to get us to laugh. He whips out this "99˘ Only" bunny rabbit puppet - still stuck to its cardboard backing. According to him, the cloth-creature was missing an eye and its mouth was cock-eyed. So, this guy starts animating the puppet with his own voice, all muffled and slurred. In a split second, I went from zero to ludicrous speed. Hyena time! Since I was the only one busting a gut, I tried to contain myself. It didn't work. Honestly, that was the funniest thing I had seen / heard in a LONG time; I wish someone would have recorded it....

I never really have ever liked video games. I think most computer games are a waste of valuable time, that you could be using to do something much more productive. (Go learn a programming language. Build a rocket. Anything.) I always felt that if you wanted to play games you would just buy a game console.

I've got a playstation 2. This is just in case I really need to take a break. I don't usually use it, and plus there is always Qui nn, for OS X. But every once and a while I get the urge to play GT3 or some other game. I bought Parappa the Rappa 2 a while ago, and I love it. Today I went to the game stop and picked up Tetris Worlds, Parappa the Rappa (1), and Unjammy Lammy. All 3 are sweet.

I played Tetris Worlds against my girlfriend for about 3 hours today. Man, she whomped on me. Of course I wouldn't admit this, but dang, she's good. I guess I'm not as good at Tetris as I thought I was!

A teacher at my school got thirty two thousand and something on Quinn. Holy shnikees. Try beating that score!

ECS EZ-Bundle 2 Entertainment PC 06/14/2004 01:13 PM

ezbuddie2l.jpg imageAlthough I was too excited at first, thinking that the ECS EZ-Bundle 2 small form factor PC had an integrated front-LCD panel, it's still a nice looking box, with the front display looking every bit the part of a stereo system component. It's actually fairly large for a SFF PC, but small enough for most I would imagine, especially since the bundled 17-inch LCD and other accessories means this is probably more for those who use their computer as their entire entertainment system and not part of a dedicated Home Theater PC setup.

Really, though, it'd be nice if someone would start putting a small LCD on the front of the boxes as a secondary display -- 640 x 480 would suffice -- so you could queue up movies or music, tweak settings, or pop out to the net for a second without having to disrupt the visuals on the primary display.

In The Broadband Battle Between Speed
And Price, Customers Choose Price

In The Broadband Battle Between Speed
And Price, Customers Choose Price
12/09/2003 03:39 PM
Back in October we noted that DSL and cable providers were trying to differe ntiate themselves from each other. The DSL providers were focusing on being the low cost provider, while the cable guys wanted to be the high speed providers. At the time, we pointed out that this was likely to backfire on the cable companies. People like the speed of broadband, but for most applications there's a "good enough" speed - and many people want it more for the always on connection than the speed itself. It's looking like we were right. The latest study shows that, despite cable's commanding lead in the US, many more people are signing up for DSL these days because of the lower price. It's the basic "good enough" argument. What DSL offers is good enough for what most people want to do with their connections now. Also, the speed difference is minimal right now. You don't get that much faster speeds with cable, and there's not much you can currently do with that extra bandwidth. It used to be that people would sign up so they could download songs, but the music industry is cracking down on that enough that it's become less of a draw for many subscribers as well.

How Not To Price

How Not To Price 05/13/2004 09:23 PM
While the mainstream press picks up on the (boring) obvious story that Six Apart has released version 3.0 of their popular Movable Type blogging tool, they seem to be missing out on the bigger story: the pricing structure they set up is being almost universally trashed by loyal Mova ble Type Users. I've never used Movable Type so I have no opinion one way or the other on the software or whatever they decide to charge for it. However, it seems that they've screwed up one of the most basic rules in pricing: never take away features and charge for them. You can charge for new features - but taking away features that were included for free before always pisses off your most loyal customers. They feel suckered. They feel like you've pulled a bait and switch on them. In this case, many MT users set up multiple blogs with multiple authors. That's what the software encouraged them to do. Now, they're looking at the pricing and realizing to continue doing so on the new platform would cost them around $600. "Costs more for doing less" isn't a way to make users happy. One other rule of pricing: recognize the competition. There are an awful lot of blogging tools out there, and more are coming out every day. Not all of these are free, and people clearly pay to use certain tools. However, ignoring competitive pricing (as Six Apart appears to have done, since the prices they're offering are well above the competition) doesn't make much sense - especially when the switching costs really aren't that high. Anyway, it looks like Six Apart has gone into damage control mode, trying to explain that this is just a "developer release." However, they (of all people) should have known how their users would respond to this offering.

The Price of Perfection

The Price of Perfection 04/23/2004 09:33 AM

Joel on Software - Thursday, April 22, 2004: Joel makes some good points about how we programmers have a tendency to try make things perfect beyond any practical benefit. He's touched on this before as well, with a story about the Netscape refactoring.

Perfectionism is a very dangerous quality in business and in life, because by being perfectionist about one thing you are, by definition, neglecting another.

The three days I spent insuring that all icons in CityDesk 3.0 are displayed with perfect alpha-blended effects came at the price of having a web site where the descender of the "g" is not a hyperlink. • Reuters: Google Slashes IPO, SEC OK Expected Today. Google Inc. slashed the size of its closely watched initial public offering nearly in half to less than $2 billion on Wednesday, splashing cold water on what has been touted as the hottest Internet IPO in years.
  • Cold water, no. But definitely a well-deserved rebuke by the investor community that was being asked to pay way too much in the first place. There's been a significant whiff of greed in the Google IPO saga, combined with some unfortunate arrogance on the part of the company. I'm glad to see that investors didn't buy the hype beyond a fairly sensible point. Even $80 sounds a little high to me, but it's at least in the not-totally-insane range.
