Vivato Deploys at Lincoln University
Vivato Deploys at Lincoln University
11/03/2003 02:35 PMVivato's switches save years and dollars at university: This
installation would have been challenging for conventional wireless
LANs, the press release notes, because the university spans many
buildings across 400 acres. Many of the 40 buildings are historic,
which probably translates into "no wiring closets" and an aging
electrical physical plant. The backstory of a press release like this
is that Vivato finds it necessary to promote the installation of their
equipment at institutions with unique characteristics rather than
announcing the sale of their gear to Fortune 5000 companies or
wireless ISPs....

ICOA Unwires Spokane Airport with Vivato
Equipment
04/26/2004 02:41 PMVivato's equipment will be used by ICOA to provide Wi-Fi service at
the Spokane airport: The airport handles about 1.2 million passengers
(counted once for enplanement/deplanement) per year. ICOA seems to be
specializing in smaller but high-volume airports like Sacramento,
Savannah/Hilton Head, and Fresno that require very little hardware but
reach a million or more passengers a year. Extrapolating from
Concourse's figures for usage at Minneapolis-St. Paul, these smaller
airports should see 20 to 30 sessions per day....

Web TV Co-Founder Dies at 39
12/30/2003 09:44 AMOver the course of his career, Goldman worked on the cusp of
technology and consumer electronics at firms such as Apple Computer
and Microsoft Corp. The cause of his death may take several weeks to
determine, the coroner's office said. In 1995, along with former Apple
colleagues Steve Perlman and Bruce Leak, Goldman co-founded WebTV
Networks, which allowed users to surf the Internet from their
televisions. Microsoft bought WebTV in 1997 for $425 million and today
is called MSN TV. Last year, Goldman founded Mailblocks, a Los Altos
company that sells a Web-based e-mail system that promises to
eliminate unwanted e-mail, or spam. Earlier this year, it sued
competing companies using similar technology to eliminate spam,
claiming patent infringement.

Interview with Wikipedia founder
Interview with Wikipedia founder
08/06/2004 01:14 PM
Slashdot is carrying a great
interview with the founder of Wikipedia. Wikipedia
is only about three and a half years old, but in that time it has
already grown well beyond the size of most standard printed
encyclopedias. In the interview, Jim Wales talks about how they manage
all that content, how they collect and spend donations to keep it
running, and what the future holds for Wikipedia. While Wikipedia
isn't Creative Commons licensed content, it is licensed in a similar
open fashion and this interview provides insight into what it takes to
run a massive open and free content project.
