Woes of Big Holidays

Woes of Big Holidays 12/27/2004 08:25 AM

Egad.  One down, one more to go.  I hate big holidays because the big ones are actually three in one: Blah Eve, Blah itself, and After-Blah Sales Day.

On Blah Eve, my wife expects me to pay attention to her.  That means lots of kisses and lip service.  I wonder if the word Eve being the name of the first gal had something to do with this.

On the Blah Day, my wife expects me to pay attention to the family.  In modern terms, this means doing far more TV watching than my usual 30 minutes a day.  The worst part is that TV programming really sucks on such days.  Radio is even worse.

On the After-Blah Sales Day, my wife expects me to be invisible.  Actually she is the one that does the disappearing act from dawn til dusk.  If I happen to get up too early, I get the deathray look.  This morning, I got up just as she was putting on her shoes to go out shopping.  Oops.

The Blogosphere and the Holidays

The Blogosphere and the Holidays 12/20/2003 06:16 AM

First, if this time of year makes you cheerful, have a happy. I'm pretty ambivalent. There are some things I like and some things I don't. I see the pressure to buy for what it is. Pressure, which I don't like, and commercialism, which I also don't like. I love buying nice things, but almost no one knows how to do that for me like I do. I suspect that's true of everyone.

One of the things I like about this time of year is that so many people seem to have a time to do interesting and fun things. It's like everyone gets a mini-sabbatical. It's time to go to a game, to the movies, a museum, out to a long lunch or visit with a few bloggers you haven't stayed in touch with. Next week I'm going to be in NYC. Maybe there will be an opportunity to do some or all of that.

Randy Charles Morin sent a question about this. Does the blogosphere pick up or go on holiday during the holidays? Here's what I said.

1. I don't have any data, but I do have subjectives.

2. The actual flow goes down, around the 25th way down.

3. But the volume of real work goes up, because people have time for projects that require attention or thinking, which they have more of in the coming two-three weeks.

I've done some of my best work in this period in years past. My first two XML projects, siteChanges.xml and scriptingNews format (which became half of RSS 0.91) were hatched in December. Last year in this time period I helped my parents get through a tough time. I was telling my brother yesterday that I have fond memories of this, it gave me a strong sense of purpose, and a sense that I made a difference. That also happened during the holidays last year.

So mostly the holidays are good. I especially like it when stress isn't a big part of it.

Most major religions have some sort of holiday during this season, and in countries that use the Gregorian calendar many companies close down or work short hours until the current year ends and the next one begins. We, too, will be taking time off to spend with our families and friends, so NewsForge will be on a reduced posting schedule between now and January 1.

Winter holidays in Russia.

Winter holidays in Russia. 12/22/2003 10:06 PM
In Russia, winter holidays are celebrated somewhat differently than in the United States and most of the West. Although the underlying substance of the winter holidays -- presents, trees, family gatherings -- is the same, it corresponds to different holidays and customs. This results from a blend of Russian national tradition, the influence of Eastern Orthodox heritage and of course, Soviet secularisation. There is a lot more to be said about this than is actually practical, so I would like to focus on two axial aspects that sit comfortably within my sphere of knowledge: New Year and the custom of giving presents. The latter topic is a little more editorial than encyclopedic, but please bear with me. Also, please understand that none of this information is in any way "authoritative." I tell you all this as a Russian immigrant, not as a cultural anthropologist or otherwise a person bearing any credentials or officialdom.

Are Paperless Holidays Good?

Are Paperless Holidays Good? 12/15/2003 03:33 AM
Now that the holiday season is in full swing, some are wondering if the trend to move away from paper holiday cards and letters is taking away from the concept. If it's the thought that counts, does it count less when the end result is easier/cheaper or less personalized? Part of this sounds like typical complaining about the "less personal" feel of some new technologies. Just like many things, I think it has advantages and disadvantages. Certainly, in some instances it seems less personal. Also, going completely electronic means that some people will never see your message thanks to spam filters and fear of viruses. However, it also can make it easier to communicate with some people. Already this year I've received two electronic holiday notes from friends who I'm sure I wouldn't have heard from otherwise. The ease of email/web communications made sure I got included and lets me know what they're up to, and reminds me to drop them a separate note to see how they're doing. While it would be great if we could all write deeply personal notes to everyone we know, the ease of internet communications makes it possible to stay in touch with those who you're not as close with, but who are still worth keeping as friends.

I'll be going home to Penang, so I won't be posting much.
