BoingBoing reader Alex Steffen points us to a new exhibition opening in January at San Francisco's Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Jan 17–Apr 4, 2004:
In conjunction with the Stanford Humanities Laboratory and the Cantor Center for Visual Arts at Stanford University, the Center presents an exhibition that addresses the pervasive influence of video game culture. The program explores a variety of subject areas, from the evolution of the game and its roots in military training applications to its contemporary features and cross-fertilization with artistic endeavors. Among the anticipated projects included in the exhibition are: an interactive lemon tree-powered hand held games by acclaimed artist and graphic designer, Amy Franceschini; renderings of historic events in the isometric perspective of video games by John Haddock; and a curated show in a virtual Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in The Sims Online created by Katherine Isbister/Rainey Straus. Also on display is an interactive video game created by the youth from YBCA's education program, Young Artists at Work. An exhibition plug-in by KOP, Game Commons, will accompany the exhibition.

The Eye of Sauron Discovered

The Eye of Sauron Discovered 06/24/2005 07:22 PM

Hubble spies lord of the stellar rings: The picture with this news article is eerie. (There's a scientific discovery buried in there somewhere as well, but that's not nearly as interesting the Eye of Sauron....)

A recent image captured with the Hubble Space Telescope — which makes the system look uncannily like the Great Eye of Sauron from the blockbusting Lord of the Rings trilogy — confirms that Fomalhaut's ring is curiously offset with respect to the star.

I was also going to note that this may be the last hurrah for the Hubble Space Telescope, but this news article indicates that there may be hope yet.

Thanks to Carter for this one.

More Mass Graves discovered

More Mass Graves discovered 04/18/2005 11:07 AM
More mass graves unea rthed in Iraq | Investigators have discovered several mass graves in southern Iraq that are believed to contain the bodies of people killed by Saddam Hussein's government, including one estimated to hold 5,000 bodies, Iraqi officials say. If the estimated body counts prove correct, the new graves would be among the largest in the grim tally of mass killings that have gradually come to light since the fall of Saddam's government two years ago. At least 290 grave sites containing the remains of 300,000 people have been found since the U.S. invasion two years ago, Iraqi officials say. In the aftermath of Saddam's fall, thousands of Iraqis overran mass-grave sites, digging for their relatives' remains with backhoes, shovels, even their bare hands. More evidence of genocide was discovered in Spring 2003, and though the numbers were disputed, the number of buried bodies discovered has continued to rise.

According to this ARS article, another 32,000 US Citizen's dates of birth, SS numbers, drivers license numbers, and other ID info were all stolen from Seisant, a division of Reed Elsevier.

Reed Elsevier says it is in the process of contacting those affected by the breach and will offer them assistance in detecting any possible identity theft resulting from their lapse.Seisint, which was acquired by Reed Elsevier in 2004, has previously come under criticism for giving government officials the names of 120,000 people who supposedly fit terrorist profiles in the wake of the attacks of September 11, 2001. Now, it joins the growing list of companies that traffic in consumer data without taking adequate safeguards to protect it.

First Smartphone Worm Discovered

First Smartphone Worm Discovered 06/15/2004 05:08 AM
It's no surprise that this was coming, as many have been predicting it for quite some time, but an antivirus company today announced the first known computer worm for a smartphone. It doesn't sound all that likely to spread - as it only works on Symbian phones, and uses Bluetooth connections to travel. It tries to detect other Bluetooth phones and then jumps to the new phone. Still, it's a noteworthy moment, and we can expect many more smartphone worms and viruses to be on their way. It won't be long until you'll need anti-virus software for your phone as well, or you may discover that your phone starts calling people in your phonebook randomly. Of course, with that in mind, it kind of makes you wonder if it wouldn't make sense for anti-virus firms to fan the flames of just such a virus to open up a new line of business for themselves.
