Is AOL Making Political Adjustments To
Google Searches?
02/10/2004 05:32 PM
The concept of Google bombing is not new, and we've already discussed what a pointless waste of time it is - sort of the equivalent to scribbling someone's name and an insult on the bathroom wall. It does a lot more to show the immaturity of those involved than to actually convince anyone of the "insult" being proposed. However, AOL is apparently taking another view of the practice. They've edited out the famous "miserable failure" Google bomb result that pointed to George W. Bush. While AOL is free to do what they want, this opens up quite the can of worms. AOL says they did it to get rid of "obviously irrelevant results." The problem, though, is that a group of people who were upset about the miserable failure Google bomb have been trying to associate the phrase with various other people such as Michael Moore, Hillary Clinton and Jimmy Carter - and AOL saw no problem leaving those links. Once you start editing the search results, it leaves you wide open to questions about why you edited them the way you did. AOL would have been much better off ignoring this matter, and letting the search results fall as they did.

Radical Breeze released on Thursday Illuminati on 1.0, a utility that indexes and searches through the contents of any disc, whether it's located online or offline. The software allows you to avoid loading multiple CDs in your Mac when looking for a file; it can tell you which disc it's on once the contents have been added to its index. It can search based on file name, path, type, creator code or file size. Illumination 1.0 requires Mac OS X v10.3 and sells for US$19 on its own or as part of the Radical Breeze 7 Pack, which also features DiscBlaze, Macabinet, DoThisNow, RadicalPhoto, RadicalSqueeze and Zephyr.

Flawed Online Searches Cost Businesses $31 Billion Last Year
http://www.emarke ter.com/Article.aspx?1002877

Amid the excitement with search advertising revenue growth and the upcoming Google IPO, a study finds US executives dissatisfied with the performance of online search engines.
According to a survey released by FIND/SVP, 84% of business executives feel that Web searches -- using the generally consumer-centric search engines now available --take longer than they should due to poor results. It is estimated that the loss of productive time using search engines to conduct online research cost businesses $31 billion last year. The study found that that not only are 71% of business executives frustrated with consumer search engines, 74% are not even confident that the results are reliable. However, despite this lack of confidence, 67% stated it would be difficult or impossible to do their jobs without Web-based search tools. Business professionals also question the reliability of search information, with 52% only "somewhat confident" that results originate from credible sources.

Interesting article and it just happens that FIND/SVP announces their "new" business search engine this week!! Hmmmm......

The Page of Generators

"Steven Savage has the turn of mind that plays with permutations, and has come up with an entire page of generators. Mostly they’re just for fun, or as an aid to imagination for gamers; but a couple of them generated material that would catch my eye in a slush ms. One is the Academic SF Generator (inexplicably filed under character-related generators), which generates fields of study...

Even better is the Action Film Trailer Generator. It’s meant to generate parodic action-movie trailer voiceovers." [Making Light]

AP - Gone are the days when parents would find out how their kids were doing in school only when report cards came home or during parent-teacher conferences. A growing number of teachers and schools are making grades available nearly in real-time over the Internet. Some teachers include pending assignments, written comments, class participation and disciplinary actions as well.

Atari Copies BMW In Making Online
Promotional Movies

I'm really somewhat amazed it's taken this long, but someone has finally decided to duplicate BMW's efforts to make compelling online promotions that people will seek out. Following the example of BMW films (a set of short films by famous directors that have a BMW as a major component of the story line), Atari has made a short film for one of their games that includes no game footage and will be shown entirely online. Once again, someone is realizing that promotional materials and content are the same thing, and you get to promote more if (a) the content is good and compelling and (b) you give it away free.

What Our Web Searches Say about Us

What Our Web Searches Say about Us 08/21/2004 05:05 AM
What Our Web Searches Say about Us
http://www.emarke ter.com/Article.aspx?1002972

Over two-thirds of those polled by Harris Interactive and MSN feel Web searches are the fastest way to find information, though what they are searching for varies widely. Whether because of curiosity, boredom or perhaps the need to find someone from one's past, many people use search engines to find out about the activities and whereabouts of friends, family and ex-boyfriends or girlfriends (the practice is widespread enough that it has acquired a name — "googling" someone — though the sponsor of the survey, MSN, probably hopes to change that with its recently revamped search engine). The most popular person-search of all, however, is users looking up themselves.

You know you just cannot get away from that EgoBot thing ;-)). This will be added to a number of my speeches available from Internet Speaker.

Google URL Searches

Google URL Searches 09/07/2004 10:24 AM

Here's a handy trick with Google: "inurl" searches. You can search for a text string in just the URLs of Google's index.

For instance, I wanted to know what content management system a certain site used. All of the site's URLs had the same patten ("/cgi-bin/b7/..."). This search in Google...

inurl:cgi-bin/b7/

...produced a list of pages with this same URL pattern. From there, it wasn't hard to find one that referenced their platform: Bazaar< /a>.

Handy.
