Bricks and Tits
04/28/2004 06:49 PM
I'm not much of a morning person, so when I am jarred out of a
restful sleep at the bright and early hour of 7am by jackhammers under
my bedroom window it takes some effort to dispel the homicidal urges I
suddenly feel for the dude with the power tools. Well, and it doesn't
do anything good for a hangover as my research would indicate. Yes,
the summer will be filled with the sound of jackhammers, falling
plaster thunking against the window ledge and construction guys
yelling at each other in colourful Finnish. In my early morning sleepy
delerium I'd swear I've heard them shouting in English, too. Like a
comet on a 10-15 year orbit, the ulkoseinäremontti [house exterior
repair] has returned to our house for the next few months.
Especially in the older buildings downtown, people always ask before
renting or buying an apartment when the last ulkoseinäremontti or
putkiremontti [plumbing] was done as both tend to create a fair amount
of inconvenience and financial outlay for the residents. The
putkiremontti question is commonly asked in an almost secretive
whisper, "Have they done the plumbing yet?", as though saying it
loudly enough for the building to hear would invoke the plumbing
demons to come forth. Ulkoseinäremontti involves a scaffold being
erected around the building and the entire plaster/cement covering
being removed all the way back to the bricks. After all the old cruft
has been eradicated, they replace the window ledge coverings, replace
the gutters, repair the roof and then replaster the walls. I really
had to giggle when I noticed the selection of posterboards for our
windows as they are classic. During the non-winter months, there are
quite a few buildings shrouded in scaffolding for this kind of work.
The end result is often rather beautiful, but you can't help but feel
a bit of pity for the inhabitants while the remodelling is underway.
HB barked at the workmen as they sealed the windows with thick opaque
plastic before boarding them up. Just as the weather warms up and the
sun returns north, they have managed to turn our apartment into a dark
and airless crypt. It's not going to be a very pleasant summer for the
old gimp since it'll be hot, dusty and close inside with the place
sealed up tight. I think he'll be permanently parked on the bathroom
tile floor for much of the summer. He particularly favours the spot
directly in front of the toilet so that you have to step over him and
then pretzel yourself in order to sit down without disturbing him. I
signed up for the early morning intensive Suomi 3 class in June since
I'm up every day at 7am with the jackhammers, so I may as well go
torture myself on my own terms. Either way, I think I'll be needing a
lot of Burana caps over the next few months. :)

LED Molex Cables
LED Molex Cables
07/19/2004 11:15 AM
Although they may be dying out slowly in this age of
Serial ATA and other four-prong power cables, the venerable Molex DC
power connector is going to be around for a while longer. And what
happens when there's a replaceable part inside the modern-day PC?
That's right, someone puts lights in it. These PowerMod6 Molex
cables from Japanese peripheral maker Scythe may not be out in the
States yet, but I would expect to find the $10 (or so) cables imported
by your favorite aftermarket mod shop soon enough.

Sony tranSticks: Wireless Cables
Sony tranSticks: Wireless Cables
07/14/2004 09:59 AM
Research-types at Sony's Computer Science
Laboratories have developed a concept called 'transSticks,' virtually
connected Memory Sticks that act as simple networking cables between
any two devices that support the standard. Although there are
certainly bugs to work out, I'm sure (like security, although they
seem to be keeping that in mind), being able to throw away networking
cables completely would be great -- even if it necessitated every
device having a Memory Stick slot. When someone develops a pairing
standard that works like this between different card types, that will
be more impressive.
Or wait, what if the wireless radios were inside the devices
themselves and operated over a standard protocol, like 802.11b? I
suppose that's just crazy talk. (I feel the need to disclaim my
hateration -- this is actually pretty cool.)

Charging for Groups
Charging for Groups
09/21/2004 10:14 AMWe discovered an intersting thing at 1UP.com - companies are
willing to pay to get into the social networking space.
Whenever they hear about lots of people congragating - their ears
perk up.
So Tony Perkins - and his AlwaysOn Network has decided to
monetize that - and charge for Groups in it's Zaibatsu social network.
The first one was announced yesterday - with Audi.
Here's the details:
We are pleased to announce that Audi of
America is the first AlwaysOn Media Partner to launch its own Keiretsu
on the AO network. AlwaysOn is the first media site to offer its
partners a community building service that combines both blogging and
social networking capabilities.
All AO members can join the Audi of America Keiretsu for FREE.
It’s easy, so check it out!
http://audiamerica.alwayson-network.com
AO members who join the Audi of America’s Keiretsu will enjoy
future special offers and privileges exclusive to members.
“Our new group social network and blog site on AlwaysOn provides
Audi the unique opportunity to identify smart executives and
entrepreneurs in the global Silicon Valley arena and gain their
feedback and create a dialogue on technology trends in our
industry,” said Jim McGough, Director of Audi America.
“Our new AO Keiretsu also allows Audi enthusiasts within the
AlwaysOn
community to find and interact with each other. This kind of community
building tool offers Audi an opportunity to target a market of smart
executives in a way that has never been possible before.,” said Mr.
McGough.
In the next couple of weeks, AlwaysOn is planning to roll-out
additional Keiretsus on behalf of many of our other Media Partners
including Sun Microsystems, KPMG, Quova, Porter Novelli and
SupportSoft.
Commercial brands interested in launching their own AlwaysOn
Keiretsu and learning more about our Media Partner Program should
contact my partner Mike Sly at sly@alwayson-network.com.
AlwaysOn also offers related non-profits and trade associations the
Keiretsu service for at no charge. To see if your group qualifies for
the AO Keiretsu program, contact Brennan Igoe at
brennan@alwayson-network.com.
As always, we look forward to any feedback on our new Keiretsu
offering or any other service we provide. If you would like to make
your comments public to other Ao members, check out my new post at:
